Originality / Re: speedo clips and location
« on: January 10, 2014, 03:42:41 PM »
Does anyone have an installed photo of the speedo clip that's located on the passenger side of the trans tunnel? I need the precise location (measured off the trans tunnel seam?) and the orientation (speedo cable captured / clamped below the drilled hole or above the hole?). Thanks.

Another picture showing plugs from both sides.  From left to right.
LISLE MAGNETIC 2
LISLE magnetic
P magnetic
W fill plug (note - not magnetic)
No marks magnetic - current plug that is not correct, but is functional for the task.  I have about 100 of these new.

Quite the collection Bryon.

I have visited the Lisle Manufacturing plant that made the original plugs.  I tried to see if they could make them again with the same original lettering.  No dice.

I believe the LISLE 3 plug was in use prior to the M22 being introduced (so it is prior to 1965).

There are at least three minor variations of the LISLE MAGNETIC 2 plug.  The 1969 model year type plugs were also used in 1968 M22s in Camaros.

From what I can tell, the P and LISLE plugs are 1970 and later.  Possibly some in very late 1969 but not sure on that.  Typically used when there was both a fill and drain plug.

The W plug with underline is a fill plug, the normal plug for M20 and M21 transmissions 1969 and earlier.

Bryon, thanks for filling in some additional details on the applications.

Enamel reducer is what I used, this whole engine compartment had been rattlecanned during the 70's, Figuring it to be enamel I tried enamel reducer VIOLA....

FYI this is TEDIOUS AND NASTY work and must be done in a well ventilated area. IT TOOK 20 HOURS PLUS, however the original phosphates etc were beautiful, the car was certified survivor at the 07 Camaro Nationals.

It seems like yesterday we were Vintage Certifying that car. Wow 7 years in June. BTW you did an amazing job cleaning and detailing the car while preserving the original finishes and stampings.

Yes, James did some very nice work to preserve and revive the car while under some pressure to restore it which I'm pleased he and William resisted.  The preservation work has continued.

Looks good Lloyd.  Those are correct per my discussion with Jerry as well.   Here's the plugs that are on my Z's original M22.   After Jerry rebuilt it, he requested follow-up pics for his files and research.   Confirmed original for the car/trans.  Built date of the car is 04B.   Note that the trans came with two magnetic plugs - both the same.

Thanks for the confirmation Hans, your Lisle plugs look identical to my replacements.

Originality / Fill & Drain Plugs 1969 Muncie M22

I discovered (with help from Jerry M) that the drain and fill plugs in my 3/69 build date Muncie M22 transmission were likely from either a late 1969 or post 1969 production M22. The plugs are made by Lisle and I have seen them stamped with a P, W (with underline), the Lisle script only, with the Lisle Magnetic 2 script and Lisle Magnetic 3 script.  The Lisle Magnetic 2 design is correct for my transmission build date and most early/mid 1969 and prior M22 production transmissions. The Lisle Magnetic 2 plugs also have a unique dual spade magnet design (see "bottom view" photo).

Originality / Re: 1100837 Alternator Stamping - Original?
« on: December 17, 2013, 05:26:00 PM »
Lloyd,

Here's a clearer pic of my alternator.   Hope this helps.  Unfortunately, I don't have enough expertise to comment the one you are considering, so can't add value there.

Not sure why Photobucket rotated the picture.   I re-rotated on the site, but reverts back to this mode when I add the link.   If you click through the pick, it should display normally.

Thanks for posting Hans, although your 837 has been restored certain of the characters are unmistakeably distinct and unique to the original stamping set.

Restoration / Re: Delco Script Color on Battery

Eddie, for the 1,600 mile Z/28 the caps must be painted yellow. It's unclear if the embossed DELCO and Energizer script are also to be painted yellow as there seems to be strong evidence to support painted or unpainted. Personally for a restored car I prefer painted lettering as James did per the photos he posted on this thread. It looks sharp adds color to the engine compartment and is supportably correct.

Eddie, this is the battery you want for the production date of your car, its the only repro I'm aware of that is a side terminal design and with the appearance of a Y77, just needs painting. Batteries from this company have been poorly received by the hobby however they now have a 4 year warranty which is an improvement.  I use a top post battery I bought from them that has served me well for almost 3 years (so far).

Here is an early photo of a 1969 Z/28 engine compartment that appeared in Hot Rod Magazine. You can clearly see the DELCO script is painted on the battery. The "Delco Eye" filler cap should be in the second from right (passenger side) position as shown. The photo Chick posted (originally from Jerry) is from a 1968.

Eddie, the battery I currently have in my car (below) is a repro Restoration Battery (R59).  I replaced the red filler caps with original, vintage Y series Delco caps so it has the appearance of a Y55. The give-away of course is that the terminal polarity is conventional with + positive on the left (drivers) side. On the original Y55s the terminal polarity was reversed. The second and third photos are of a vintage NOS Y55 battery that I sold earlier this year. As James noted you can see how the paint was applied on the embossed DELCO Energizer letters, showing runs especially on the large D, C & O.

My engine compartment with a mock Y55

Original NOS Y55

As your car is a late production, long after late April 1969, it would have been spec'd with a side terminal Y77.

Thanks for the input. I'm looking for constructive input on the the "7". Does anyone have an original with the same digit / character shape?

There is another 837 alternator on Ebay #251370450530 with the same date to do a comparison.

Dates are 1 month apart.

Lloyd - just a word of caution on "837" alternators - I had to source one for my Z last year.  I really struggled to sort out real from the fakes.   It takes a real pro to know is what I found out.   Fortunately, Jerry MacNiesh was rebuilding my engine at the time and I was able to get his confirmation the one I was considering was real.   I think he rejected 90% of the ones I sent him for consideration (at least 15 - 20 samples).   I was quite shocked how many re-stamps are out there.

Heres the one I bought, confirmed by Jerry as a real "837".   It's a little early for my build (March), but within the acceptable range.   Also, I'll take a better pic if needed.

Yes, I agree with your comments Hans.  I have seen plenty of 837 stamps and the impressions are most all inconsistant - they were hand/gang stamped for identification and not for artistic merit.  On your 837 the bottom of the 0s (zeros) appear irregular and the foot of the first number 1 (one) is mis-stamped, typical irregularities found on others.  I have been paying far more attention to the condition of the aluminum case on un-restored orginals as its extremely difficult to fake / replicate 45 years of patina so tampering is easier to detect.

Would appreciate opinions as to the originality of this 837 stamping:
