Restoration / Re: 1969 Brake Line Retainer Clips - Finishes

Here's my first attempt.

THAT LOOKS GREAT!

Thanks James, I’m using a solvent based metal dye applied with an airbrush. The photo was taken after 3 medium weight coats allowing 10 minutes between coats. I’m going to try again with light coats for coverage however more translucence.

I was going to say that Steve Shauger's 13k miles 05A SS RS 350 did not have them on it.
Thanks for your help James.

I had a 05A 396 car here at the house that had 11,998 original miles & that feature wasn't on it....Joe

That’s helpful, thanks Joe.

I was rereading and I want to be clear...
Lloyd the motor mounts which you picture are CORRECT ASSEMBLY LINE MOUNTS for your car, however the bracket and long bolt spacer washer were a production line change which occurred later in production.

Thanks James, do you know when the stop bracket and related hardware were introduced?

Lloyd there are some photos showing blue on the protected areas of original clips in this post, scroll down past the body mount pictures to see the clips:

Looks more of a solid color than a translucent.

Not the best photo however here is the photo of the blue clip from the 11C Norwood car you referenced. Definitely closer to a solid color and a different shade of blue than found on my car (2B Norwood):

I had another look through my brake parts from the disassembly and located a single brake clip that shows the blue finish. In this example its translucent.

Thanks for posting James, do you have any photos of the translucent blue clips?

Restoration / 1969 Brake Line Retainer Clips - Finishes
« on: September 06, 2019, 05:18:43 PM »
I'm working on restoring (if possible) the brake line clips on my 69 Z/28 project and want to see if I can duplicate the original, translucent blue finish often seen on the 3/8" clips (as well as the finishes on the other clips). From threads I've read it seems many have tried however I haven't run across a product or technique that comes really close to the original translucent blue so I'm going wade in. When I disassembled my car I didn't take photos of the translucent blue clip finish which is sometimes preserved and appears on the inside of original clips. If anyone has photos - please post them here. Below are the clips available from Camaro parts vendors. The 3/8" clips appear to be an opaque phosphate blue finish or ? and I haven't previously come across a green clip on the cars I've worked on? For the black open hoop clips I'm interested to know if they are were originally painted (semi-gloss black) or finished with black oxide? Would appreciate your photos and input.

I have a set of these motor mounts from my 1969 Z/28 but I'm missing the unique hardware for the drivers side mount and need help with some dimensions to aid my search:

1. Length of the through bolt
2. Diameter and thickness of the flat washer (it appears to be extra thick)
3. Inside and outside diameters of the bright sleeve that passes through the motor mount stop bracket (best view is the first photo)

Please post if you have these measurements! Thanks.

Restoration / Re: Correct color bolts for Steering Box

Actually it's 01 183 9. The box was cast 181. Assembled 2 days later. It has the flanged bolts "N", not the ones with the lock washers. Hawk X66. his box was built the same day but they are different...Joe
Interesting, and seemingly a departure from Julian Dating. Dave's (Hawk X66) box was cast on 179 (or possibly 177) of 1969 (June 27 or 29) then machined on 181 of 1969 (June 30) and follows Juilan dating - not seeing the similarity.

Here is a PS box I restored for a buddy recently, original to his 70 Z/28. The casting date shown is 104 (April 4) and the machining date is 110 70 (April 20) 6 days apart.

Build date 08/28/1969...Joe

Joe, the date stamp on your steering box corresponds with the date the case was machined. I read it as the 118th day of X9 (the 6? is distorted). That would date the case April 28, 1969 . If it has its original cap bolts are they shouldered or non shouldered?

About every PS box date has a ghost stamp. Something related to their process.
Mine was under the top cover. Nothing except a casting date on the outside...Joe

Joe, would you post a photo? I don't quite understand your description.

Scot, the link is shown on my signature line however here it is: https://www.camaros.net/forums/133-build-projects/337897-1969-camaro-rs-z-28-brooklyn-project.html

There are posts on the PS box rebuild beginning at Post #349. Also references to cast iron restoration and heat treating at Post #285 and at Post # 64. Let me know if you have any questions.

Jim, the date stamp on your PS box cover appears to read 80th day of 1969 (March 21, 1969) and non-shouldered bolts.
