Originality / Re: 1969 Front Shock Absorber Mounting J-Nuts
« on: September 25, 2019, 08:54:39 PM »
Don't worry about the head markings since there were multiple vendors supplying hardware to GM at the time. However, those J-Nuts being sold by the various vendors aren't even close to being "correct".

Ed

Ed, I did notice that the affixed "nut" on the clips in the two photos you posted differ, one is four sided with the corners eased and the other a (conventional) hex nut. Are both of these styles correct for 1969? Vendor differences?

Thanks Ed - as expected, not the same.

Mike: AMK stocks the bolts PN 9420555 (not sure about correctness of the head marking) however the do not show the J-Nuts 391359

I seem to have misplaced the (4) J-Nuts that clip onto the lower control arms and receive the bolts for the front shocks (...and Rich P doesn't have any!). Are these repops exactly the same as the originals or do they differ?

Lloyd,
Are you going to have your car at MCACN this year?

James, my project won't be completed in time for MCACN 2019 which is unfortunate given its the recognition year for 1969 production. I haven't had sufficient time to devote to the restoration and I've decided I'm not going to rush it.

Hans, during disassembly did you find any RS headlight shims and if so would you post a photo. These are rarely seen in captivity and it’s not clear to me what was used at the factory on a consistent basis.

Hmmm....I don't have a pic, but I'll check my tagged bags and see if I have any noted as RS Headlamp shims.

Hans, not to wander too far off topic however here's the only photo I have of RS headlight bucket shim (that appears to be original)

Good photos. It probably deserves to be stated: the slotted middle layer of the RS doors which is pot metal and forms part of the support structure should be natural / unpainted.

Hans, the RS door hinges on my former 69 RS/Z survivor were painted 30% gloss black. I researched this subject some time ago and I have observed the same paint treatment on other RS’ however with some, infrequent exceptions where the hinges were unpainted. It’s also possible these were replacement parts due to front end collision damage repairs. The small firewall mounted stop brackets were also 30% gloss black and the attaching bolts are silver zinc. The rubber door stop bumper is unpainted.

Getting ready to refinish the following Rally Sport parts - seems all are various hues of black.

Is 30% Gloss Black correct for these parts?  (See pic below)
- Support Brackets (both small and long ones)
- Bell Crank Lever
- Headlight housing
- Vacuum Tank

And it seems the headlight bucket is more glossy - 60-70% or?

Hans, based on the original finishes I studied I’m planning to

Can anyone confirm what's best to go with for the above?

Hans, based on the original finishes on the RS components I’m restoring, I’m intending to paint the parts 30% gloss black except the inner headlight buckets and the vacuum tank that will both get 60% gloss black. Missing from your photo are the (2) support rods and (2) door hinges that will also receive 30% gloss black. I could be convinced otherwise but that’s my current plan.

Restoration / Re: 1969 Brake Line Retainer Clips - Finishes

Looks good Lloyd but how much shine does it produce. Several years ago I had experimented with good old machinist Dykem Bluing and that seemed to work well with very little work. Easy touch-up if needed also.

Thanks Chick, it’s a matte gloss with no top coat. What gloss if any are you suggesting?

Here's my first attempt.

THAT LOOKS GREAT!

Thanks James, I’m using a solvent based metal dye applied with an airbrush. The photo was taken after 3 medium weight coats allowing 10 minutes between coats. I’m going to try again with light coats for coverage however more translucence.

I was going to say that Steve Shauger's 13k miles 05A SS RS 350 did not have them on it.
Thanks for your help James.

I had a 05A 396 car here at the house that had 11,998 original miles & that feature wasn't on it....Joe

That’s helpful, thanks Joe.

I was rereading and I want to be clear...
Lloyd the motor mounts which you picture are CORRECT ASSEMBLY LINE MOUNTS for your car, however the bracket and long bolt spacer washer were a production line change which occurred later in production.

Thanks James, do you know when the stop bracket and related hardware were introduced?
