12437 NOR NOR3653XX
TR 727       71 71 PNT
                X33D80

Well, do we have a match?

I agree with Mark, a picture is worth a thousand words!  There is something in the info you posted that doesn't add up.

I think the 346 master was used in '67 & '68, and maybe early '69, but I would think an 03D car would have the 309 master cylinder.  The "ZA" stamped on the front will tell the exact application for the unit, but I don't have any way to cross reference it for you.  I'm sure someone else on the site will be able to help you out there.

Well, there's a digit missing from the date, so that should throw up a flag.  Pictures are worth a thousand words, especially on stamps and trim tags.

That link didn't turn out clickable like I expected.  What did I do wrong?

Try here

They have several dates available for those heads.

Thanks, JohnZ.  That adds up to what I've got.

. . . The CE prefix with a sequence number is a designation for a warranty action and is not an over the counter or crate engine designation. You wouldnt have been able to walk into the GM service department and order a 69 302 to replace your base 307 and receive a CE stamped block. . .
How were the crate motors designated?  I have one from 1967 that came in my car, and the pad is blank.  I don't think it has been resurfaced, either.  It was supposedly bought as a short block.

I think the AIM gives pretty detailed information on this.  I know that for some holes there are dimples to mark the location.

I don't think 557XXX would have an X code, probably a 12A or early 12B car.  There are some 12B cars that didn't have X codes.

Very well written, as always Kurt!

Why would someone swap out the tag on an original big block car with an X55 tag?

I have a DZ block that was like that.  I couldn't make it out at all until it was hot tanked.
