General Discussion / Jim Shea's steering pages down
« on: August 31, 2023, 06:02:02 PM »
So a fellow Camaro owner was looking for specs on rebuilding his column.  I tried to get the links but Jim's page is down.  Anyone save the docs?  I was able to do some hacking and download some docs, but not organized from http://jimshea.corvettefaq.com/wp-content/uploads/

Did CRG capture the info?

Thanks William!  I am close to installing my dipstick on my original 327 engine and now I know the correct finish!

Is that the same for all Flint engines? i.e. 327 & 350?  Also was Tonawanda any different?

I assume both the tube and dipstick were added after paint station? Like Alt and carb, etc?

thanks

General Discussion / Re: Question about rear of car being to low
« on: July 09, 2023, 12:45:11 PM »
Congrats on the purchase!

For me, I like a little rake in 69s.  I like the height of the car to have the rear tire top even with the top of qtr panel lip. And the top of front tire just a little below the fender lip.  When measuring the bottom of the rocker panel, the rear would be around 1 inch higher than the front.

The only way to change how the car sits is to work with the springs.  For my 69 vert, I used Moog 6320 springs.  Same specs as a z/28 6308 coil spring, but has a bit more height for the heavier convertible.  I had stock mono leafs re-arched 1.5" over stock height. This put my camaro just where I wanted it.

For your car, I agree start at the front, determine what spring height/coil diam. you have.  Then move on to the rear.

You said the front springs are new, measure the coil diameter & free height to see determine the spec, i.e. you might have big block springs in a small block car.  If they are just too tall then cutting a little bit will lower the front.  But if the spring is too soft, you could bottom out.  Small adjustments are key.

Then once you have the front where you want it, then work on the rear.  You new rear leafs might have been ordered with a drop.  If so, you can get them re-arched to the height you want.  Otherwise you can order new springs at the height you are looking for.

Yes, changing out all the springs is a bit of work, but it will pay for the look and handling of the car.  Shame the PO did not put in the work and just grabbed random springs to install.

I don't know if they are repro-ed, but I have some black ones if you want to try paint/dye?

Originality / Re: 69 door handles
« on: April 13, 2023, 12:43:27 PM »
Good question!  I have some used sets of thick handles which I plan to try rechroming.  But if there is a better place to find them new, that might be better.

Congrats!  Replacing rams and lines is a future project for me too.

I wonder what a signed 1st edition ( I think) is going for? :)

No, they should not come out easily.  The pockets are peened to hold the ball loosely.  Maybe you can peen the sides a little?

Yes, just two (really 3), the ram end that attaches to the top and the pivots on either side of the ram.  it's tight in there.  Do not take the ram bracket off the body support or else you will have to re-align the bracket.

Alright, I am digging through my steering components.

One car "done" standard 69 base car w/drums, the other an 69 SS w/disc (restoration project).  Both with power steering.

The base car has a 3953227 long pitman on it, not sure what arms were there, but it has the short arm 3954875/876 now (w/Moog idler).  Steering is responsive, but has an oversteer deflection point.  This was/is the same setup I plan to use for the SS.

But I also have the standard power steering setup 39532119 short pitman with long arm 3954873/874 in a box.

Read up on a bunch of posts and William posted this informative specs:

#3. The standard [exc Camaro SS and Z/28] power steering ratio was 16.0:1-12.4:1 [gear] 15.5:1-12.8:1 [overall]. 2.16 turns L-L. Standard production power steering gear, 5.25” pitman arm, long steering arms.

#4. The standard Camaro SS and Z/28 power steering ratio was 16.0:1-12.4:1 [gear] 14.5:1-10.8:1 [overall]. 2.06 turns L-L. Standard production power steering gear, 5.75” pitman arm, short steering arms.

So the question is: Should I redo the base car back to stock components (39532119 short pitman with long arm 3954873/874) and will it change the handling enough to notice? Or stick with the SS version (3953227 long pitman short arm 3954875/876)?

Thanks!

Maintenance / Re: Replacing Heater Control Cables - Maybe
« on: February 07, 2023, 01:38:47 PM »
I agree on removing everything.  4 things that cause bindings, you have to check them all individually, 1:lever action on heater control, 2: switches/vac modules, 3:cables, 4: heater box arms.

Once you find which one(s) are binding, fix those. If cables are rusty internally, maybe some evaporust?  then a thin lube like slick 50 to free them up. my .02

I just looked in my part drawers and still have about 10 Y connecters from the same run as Dave69x33's one.  They do not feel brittle, but I would think underhood heat could play a role. If the washer is not functional, filling the internal holes with something might help keep it solid.

I am surprised that no one has mentioned the front window cranks for Deluxe door panels!  These are a totally different front crank than the standard front or even the rear (even though rear cranks for Deluxe interior are the same part no).
