General Discussion / Re: Power Steering fluid or ATF
« on: Today at 02:45:10 AM »
From the ‘69 Chassis Service Manual section on Power Steering.  I use ATF in my ‘69 RS due to concern that over the counter ps fluid today might not be what GM had in mind back in the day.

Also simplified what fluids I needed to keep on hand - same as what goes in the Powerglide.

Restoration / Re: My 1969 Camaro will not shut off
« on: November 30, 2023, 04:13:49 PM »
Is it running on like dieseling, or running like normal?  If running normally, it could be your ignition switch.  Dieseling could be a timing issue.

I agree - if it running like normal, then the ignition switch is not shutting of the power when you turn it off.

If it were me, I’d remove the power brake booster and master cylinder in order to have good access in order to separate the bulkhead connector and check/clean everything as needed.  You could easily have other terminal corrosion issues that need to be dealt with.

General Discussion / Re: 68 console clock
« on: October 30, 2023, 03:07:54 PM »
Does anyone know which manufacturer made them. I have one I’d like to get working, but can’t find a kit. Any help is appreciated.

As far as ‘68 Camaro - I don’t know.  The in dash clock for my ‘66 Chevelle was made by Westclox.  My fix (back in the mid 90’s) was to send out the clock and replace the old, broken, mechanical movement with a quartz movement.

General Discussion / Re: 1968 SS stripes
« on: October 28, 2023, 03:50:11 PM »
Two problems I see with vinyl stripes, lettering, etc.:
1- Sometimes all of the glue doesn't release and leaves a messy condition requiring prep and paint.
2- Paint fade around the vinyl definitely requires repaint to balance. Mainly if the car is outside a lot; like shows, racing, etc.

Definitely agree.

Unless the car is a totally original SS, painting rally stories on it will have little effect on the value.

It’s your car - if you like and prefer the Z-28 rally stripes, then by all means keep them.

The ONLY opinion that matters is yours.

Good luck

Perhaps this will help.

Although at first glance it looks "busy", the color coding really helps trace out the circuits.

Is there a succession plan? I think a lot of us are getting older and I wonder what happens when.....

Still a valid question - what happens when ….

At least they are not misrepresenting it.  Their description both on eBay as well as their site clearly states “replica”.

“We have a first-generation 1969 Chevrolet Camaro Pace Car Replica Convertible here at Skyway Classics….”

……Personally I would be looking for a longer belt, you may need it.

I was thinking exactly the same thing - why not get the correct belt on the car now and be done with it???

I bet over 90% of the people who want a 1st Gen Camaro don't really care about matching numbers.  They just want a nice car.

I totally agree.

A 1st Generation Camaro doesn’t have to be a numbers matching Z to be considered worthy of consideration……..but that’s just my opinion which with $1.50 will buy you a cup of coffee.

Restoration / Re: Temperature Gauge Increments
« on: June 30, 2023, 05:54:21 PM »
Cold = 70 degrees
1/4 Scale = 105
1/2 Scale = 141
3/4 Scale = 176
Hot = 212

When I installed console gages in my '69 RS back in 1993, I made a "quick and dirty chart" by monitoring temperature of the water outlet housing vs. gage reading up to normal and then based on that information, extrapolated what the higher temp values would be.  This has worked well for me over the years.

Have you tried a different timing light?

Are you sure your harmonic balancer is sound and not partially broken?

I call BS. The VA can see a much higher vacuum under a decel - ported or not.

Been running manifold vacuum on my distributor (with Pertronix/eliminated the points) since 2005 - works great - no issues.

General Discussion / Re: Tire rub

Everybody has their thing - but if its an all numbers matching car, then why do it?  (that's the purist in me)

I have the same thought - doesn’t seem like a car to apply the old principle of “beat to fit, paint to match”.

But as the owner, obviously your call.

Body tag looks like it has been off the car IMHO.
