Originality / Re: Help with Engine Stampings
« on: January 10, 2024, 06:49:58 PM »
The V1010DZ stamping looks legit; the VIN stamping does not.

Van Nuys Z/28s built at that time [Dec 3, 1968] have mid-November engines. Late October builds have early October engines. The only data points I have for Oct 10 are in Norwood cars.

It's the pitman arm; 5.75" center to center that was used for fast ratio steering. Also, shorter steering arms.

Speaking from experience, once the drive train is gone a no paperwork Z/28 will never return the investment your plan requires. Getting very tough to find AD wheels [$4,000], 837 alternator [$2,000], et cetera. Your car is very early production, finding the right dates will take years. Today, acquiring every Z-specific part the car needs represents $25k+.

You can use some lacquer thinner on a rag to clean up that body tag.  No NOT use anything abrasive.

Tag looks to have been disfigured in an engine bay fire.

The wiper transmission was obviously over sprayed white prior to installation on the Chevy side. I think it would have been a simple matter to maintain a small inventory of those in production. Maybe painted in enamel in the wheel production area?

I did reach out to the NCRS and they said they could not find anything on my VIN, I’m not sure why some cars have info and some don’t, but I was out of luck this time.

Based on the data posted, your VIN is in the L506xxx range. The NCRS has no data from Norwood in the range N508855-N587275. I have seen NCRS reports from Van Nuys at the time your car was built. Maybe they were a bit confused. I would try them again, emphasize your car is a VN build.

Even so, not going to have details on the original build configuration. Many of the Z/28 'tells' people look for [speedo cable routing, welded LH tailpipe plate] are also present on LM1 and L48 4-speed cars. A UH radiator or BO/BU/BV rear axle dated to the car would be nice; BO was Z/28 only.

Based on the trunk floor, very solid car. Body tag checks out for a VIN in the range N627xxx-N636xxx. Similar to a bud's '68 that sold on BAT for $53k.

Don't buy it with the intention of restoring it. Only needs some interior and engine bay detailing. It's a street machine, enjoy as is.

Metal top, cardboard substrate covered with vinyl lined with padding. Top frame covers are primarily metal covered with vinyl.

This photo appeared on the cover of the June, 1969 Sports Car Graphic. It was an early production VN Z/28 also featured in the January 1969 Hot Rod and March 1969 Popular Hot Rodding.

The Petersen Archives has many photos of the car; this is the only one that shows it was built with two grille emblems. Maybe Chevy asked them to remove it?

This is a significant find for a number of reasons.

Production date
The VIN indicates the car was final assembled at Norwood on or about September 5, 1968. That makes it one of the earliest known ’69 Z/28s. There are only 3 known earlier Z/28s at Norwood; I do not include N500003, which was a Pilot build.

Originality
Of the relatively small number of surviving early production cars built at either plant, few remain in original condition. Fewer still, are Z/28-RS. Based on a few other known original finds over many years, the RS and Z/28 grille emblems are original to the car.

The D96 fender striping was to be included with RS/Style Trim but subtlety dropped from Z/28 in an update to the Showroom Album, dated September 12, 1968:

"FENDER STRIPING (RPO D96, Body-side accent stripe) included with Rally-Sport and Style Trim Group. Not available with Sport Striping (SS or RPO D90). Available in combination with Front Accent Striping (RPO DX1) or with RPO Z28."

I interpret this to indicate is D96 was now optional with Z/28 or DX1 and Z21/Z22, no longer included.

The car also retains its original bright trimmed directional lenses.

Engine
The engine was built August 28, 1968. The code is on the pad as usual and matches up with other August ’68 stampings. What is unusual is the con VIN stamping is on the side of the block by the oil filter. This is rare but consistent with other very early production cars built at both plants.

We are fortunate to have Joe involved with the preservation of the car. He has noted it retains its original negative battery cable, grounded at the core support. No telling what other surprises may be in store.

Been involved with a few of these over my many years.

First step will be to find an excellent trim shop. If you’re close to WI, one of the best is located here.

The orange plastic parts [seat trim, door panel trim, wind lace] were molded in orange and can only be re-dyed. These parts are often missing and can be hard to find.

Black plastic parts [kick panels, console, seat belt covers] can also be re-dyed. I have never used them, but I have heard the reproduction kick panels are excellent.

The instrument cluster is a different, harder plastic that is likely brittle after 54 years. If it has not been hacked for an aftermarket sound system and the wiper switch mounting tabs are intact, carefully clean it. Don’t attempt to paint it. If it is damaged, an excellent repro is available.

If the dash pad is original, it is probably hard and warped. Trying to straighten and glue it is a waste of time. Again, excellent repros are available; best of the selection is the OER. Also, the most expensive; you get what you pay for.

Z11s had custom seat belts with brushed chrome covers. If they have rusted, you will have to find replacements. If the labels on the webbing are intact, they can be hand washed. They are seat belt restoration services available if the webbing is damaged or the labels missing.

The front seats will likely need to be completely rebuilt. By now the covers are faded and worn. They will tear during removal; the seat foam will disintegrate. If the seat frames are rusted, they should be stripped. The drivers seat frame may be bent; I had one with broken welds.

Rear seat usually in better condition, will be faded at minimum. There are only repro seat covers. The houndstooth cloth used is not an exact match to OE but very close. The buttons on the repro covers are not exact but the buttons from the originals can be re-used.

Not much you can do with the headrests; they were molded and are hard by now. There are repro covers, think sore thumb.

Rebuilding the front seats is best done by an experienced shop. Getting the foam and covers on correctly, pleats properly aligned, is hard work. One bud paid close to $1,000 just for the labor and they looked like new.

Original molded door panels can be recovered with new vinyl; think Al Knoch does this. I have not heard anything good about repro panels but there may be better ones available. The quarter trim panels usually can be re-used, probably reproduced. Top boot is reproduced if you need one.

Everything else [carpeting, sill plates, cranks, ash trays] is easily available.

Tag looks ok; need a VIN to verify it belongs to that car.

Ensure coil is not hooked up backwards. It will run that way, but poorly.

VIN was final assembled on or about October 7, 1968. Car has an 05C X33 body tag; 3rd week of May, 1969.

One or both tags are not original to the car, hidden VINs may not match.
