Restoration / Re: Where to buy "correct appearing" ball joints?

The holes are 1/4 inch, I drilled out the rivets to remove them. They are still tight, just the rubber boots were shot.

Attached is a picture of the different upper ball joints. The left one is a 28K original (mine), the center one is a NOS 3963842 (ebay), the right one is a SS-195 from Classic Suspension (Chevy). The spot welds are very visible on the NOS compared to the original, but the appearance is correct. The SS-195 has a round or bubble top. The rubber boots are held on with the metal band that is shown on the original part.

Does anyone know where you could buy just the rubber boots?

Jerry,

I scraped an original 307 Glide Camaro years ago. It had the small flexplate and date coded 1108367 starter. That might be one reason there are so many Z/28 starters on ebay now.

By the way the intake and thermostat housing look great Thanks.

Dave,

Those are casting codes. Your date codes are stamped on a machined surface somewhere. I'd have to look at mine to tell you exactly where, but I'm sure if you look you will see them. I can look at mine when I get home Thursday if you don't find it.

Dave, I just saw a nice clear picture posted somewhere recently. I think the post was for shifter mounting or the shift rods, anyway the background was the tunnel that was just as you described. I also have a 5A Z and you described the underside of my car as well. I am just getting ready to send it out for some fresh paint and really did not want to do the 30% black. I'll try and post the picture if I can find it or take one from my car. If some pictures show up, I'd sure like to hear from anyone that would know how to duplicate it.
Mike

Found it.

Thanks for the correct information John, I used to know that.  :-\  So much for the cheap crankshaft...

Good luck on your purchase, now the fun begins.

I think 67 and 68 302's used the small journal crank, 69 is the only year of the large journal. If your current block is a small journal block, find a 283 crank and a set of pistons and your back in business. I was told long ago that all 283 cranks were forged and I have never seen a cast one. Back in the old days you could pick up an extra 25 cu in. pretty quick and many did.

I think there are 32,000 Z-28's still on the road. ::)
