Originality / Original markings under the paint
« on: January 09, 2009, 02:12:22 PM »
There have been many pictures posted of factory markings that were found under the paint on the firewalls of Camaros. I thought I would post these pictures of what was found under the factory paint on my sheet metal after media blasting. My car has 28K miles on it, both sides front to back had been repainted 30 years ago, original paint on the hood roof and trunk.

These markings were done with a grease pencil and just a faint image was seen depending on the angle of light while looking at the panels. I highlighted the marks with a sharpie to show up in a picture, and only marked up what I could trace.

The right quarter panel had two areas marked up, front ( Alp )  and rear( /W&Bing ). During the paint removal a factory lead repair was found where the quarter attaches to the rocker panel. I had no idea that repair was there.

The left quarter panel had a mark on the front of the panel ( R Buw Z ) but no repaired area.

Besides the normally seen markings on the firewall there was ( Obb ) written on top of the dash on the left side.

Originality / Re: What was used to cover the chipped paint on the VIN#?

My 28K Z/28 looks just like your James. I can't see any brush marks, it looks like a clear was poured over the numbers, thick enough to puddle.

Restoration / Re: Brake line and fuel line clamps and bolt finish
« on: January 04, 2009, 01:44:30 AM »
I think the U clips had a dark phosphate finish like the bolts.

When I cleaned up my fuel and brake line clamps the only place I found the "blue" remaining was on the 3/8" clamps where they were bolted closed. I'd bet that they were color coded for quick assembly at the factory.

I think Brian from SCW posted on the Yenko site he dips the clamps in machinists dye.

I'm not sure about the color of the 3/8 spring hose clamps, I'll have to get a better look at mine tomorrow.

I think the AC is short for Air Cleaner.

Nice first post. I think I can hear pages being turned in service manuals all over the country. Thanks and welcome aboard.

I am pretty sure these guy's are the source that other vendors get their parts from. I know they cast the super case...

Research Topics & Reports / Re: 69 decklid emblem holes

My 5A D80 Z/28 has both sets of holes. The lower holes were covered with a rubber backed tape that looks like something the Army would have used to patch life rafts in WWII. Here's a picture showing the first time the paint under the spoiler saw daylight in 38 years.

My 5A Norwood, 28K mile Z does not have the bracket. No threads cut in top alt. bracket either.

Here is a picture of the alternator from my Z/28. I bought the car 29 years ago with 16K on it. The date code lines up with the car and all the other parts, so I am 99.9% sure it is original to the car.

Wouldn't a I-8-9 block make it a late car? A couple of weeks or so before should be OK.

Restoration / Re: Where to buy "correct appearing" ball joints?

The holes are 1/4 inch, I drilled out the rivets to remove them. They are still tight, just the rubber boots were shot.

Attached is a picture of the different upper ball joints. The left one is a 28K original (mine), the center one is a NOS 3963842 (ebay), the right one is a SS-195 from Classic Suspension (Chevy). The spot welds are very visible on the NOS compared to the original, but the appearance is correct. The SS-195 has a round or bubble top. The rubber boots are held on with the metal band that is shown on the original part.

Does anyone know where you could buy just the rubber boots?

General Discussion / Re: 1969 Starter Motor Numbers
« on: October 02, 2007, 12:47:36 PM »
Jerry,

I scraped an original 307 Glide Camaro years ago. It had the small flexplate and date coded 1108367 starter. That might be one reason there are so many Z/28 starters on ebay now.

By the way the intake and thermostat housing look great Thanks.

Dave,

Those are casting codes. Your date codes are stamped on a machined surface somewhere. I'd have to look at mine to tell you exactly where, but I'm sure if you look you will see them. I can look at mine when I get home Thursday if you don't find it.
