General Discussion / Last weekend to drive
« on: November 04, 2007, 09:44:33 PM »
Well fellow CRG members, this was our  last weekend for cruising. :'( Spend most of the weekend up in northern Wisconsin driving the rural roads just sightseeing. Even though we may have another good weekend coming up we stored the car when we got home about an hour ago. Getting ready for the winter projects. Our list of things to do is as follows.
New carpeting, new headlight wire harness ( last major harness!!!), replace or recore the radiator  :-\along with replacing the heater core, new roof weatherstripping, rebuild the carb, should have done that when I rebuilt the engine and maybe if the funds hold out new shocks.
How about anybody else? What projects have you got lined up for this coming winter??

Maintenance / Coolant fill level
« on: October 21, 2007, 04:30:15 PM »
This may be a real ignorant question. What is the proper level to fill a radiator with a 350? I seem to be having to put coolant and water in the radiator every two or three weeks. Today I filled it again to just about and inch below the top and warmed in up and after shutting in down it ran out the overflow hose again. Could I need to have my radiator checked and recored? Or should I put in a larger radiator? I believe my is the standard two core. Nothing special about the engien when I rebuilt it still a pretty stock 350 bored +30 and a little above normal cam. Would a 3 or 4 core be suited better for a 350 powr glide tranny?

Thanks CRG!

Restoration / Dying a vinyl roof
« on: September 16, 2007, 09:53:38 PM »
I was at a car show this weekend and I brought along the samples of the original color of the vinyl roof for my car to see if any of the restoration companies that were at the show might have access to the material and color. The color is Tan/Fawn Beige for a 67 Camaro. 2 of the 3 companies I spoke with not only stated they could get the material and color but asked if I ever considered dying the top I have on the car now (off white). They stated they have done this in the past with great results and the dye would last about 4-5 years at a fraction of the cost to replace the top. Any body ever do this or have seen results of someone else that did this?

General Discussion / will wonders never cease!!!!!!!!!!
« on: August 22, 2007, 10:29:25 PM »
My wife up and did it again!!!!!!!!!!!!
We have a "hit list" of items we would like to replace on our 67. One of these items is the walnut steering wheel, ours is cracked in 3 places. Presently my wife is in Vegas with her Sister. I get home from work and there is a large package on our porch. I didn't pay a whole lot of attention to it other than it was addressed to my wife. I know she has been looking for a dress for our granddaughter for an upcoming wedding so I'm guessing this is it. I no sooner get in the house and the phone is ringing, my wife calling asking if the mail had arrived, well the package is for me (birthday tomorrow) inside is an OER walnut steering wheel!! ;D I think I need to send her on short vacations more often!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Scratch the wheel off the "hit list"

Restoration / vinyl top
« on: August 05, 2007, 09:22:04 PM »
I am thinking about replacing my vinyl top on my 67 Camaro. The problem is my top does not look like it is white, it looks more of an off white compared to the striped on my car. I know the stripes are not original to the car, could not get z-28 stripes on a 67 SS. But what about the top? Were there actually two different white tops available with one being a off white in 67 and 68. Or is my top from some year other than the first generation? Or,,,,,,, is it because my car is Plum that the top looks more off white than white or does age really change the color on these tops that much?

Thanks

General Discussion / Front fender emblems
« on: August 05, 2007, 08:57:24 PM »
Is there anyway other than pulling the inner fenders or wheel wells off to attach the double flags and engine emblem (350)to the rear of the front fenders? I lost a double flag and a "350" emblem on the drivers side front fender. Not sure if the speed nuts came off on the inside of if there were any there in the first place. The replacements I got have larger size tabs than the holes in the fender. The emblems came with speed nuts. Any other solution or do I have to pull the inner fenders off?

Thanks

Maintenance / Power brake adjustment
« on: July 24, 2007, 11:48:03 PM »
Ok what do I need to adjust or change,,,,,,,,,,,, The first time I drive my car and I step on the power brakes, they grab so hard they almost put you through the front window. After that initial braking they begin to adjust are fine after about the 3rd or 4th stop. What causes this? air? unbalanced action from the front power brakes and the back brakes? wrong size brake booster? I have a 9" booster or how about a bad power brake master cylinder? Or none of the above!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :-\ ???

This Thursday is the start of 4 days of fun in the sun! Iola car and swap meet starts. Weather is suppose to be in the mid 70's all weekend. Heading up with the wife and another couple. Friend is looking for a 57 ford ragtop. 1500 cars for sale in the corral and over 4500 vendors. This will be the first decent road trip ( about 220 miles) in the 67 since I have had the engine and tranny rebuilt. Looking forward to it.

Do you think I can find a cover for my flexplate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D

I'll let you know how it goes!!!!!!!!!!

General Discussion / POWERGLIDE FLYWHEEL COVER
« on: June 16, 2007, 04:35:44 PM »
As quite of few of you know, I have been searching for a flywheel cover for my 350 with powerglide. I have purchased 4 covers at different swap meets across Ill. and Wis. and to no avail, none have cleared the flywheel. Well I finally found out the reason for this and after explaining it to all, you'll understand it as well as I. I just had my engine and tranny rebuilt and at that time I bought a brand new cover. Much to all involved it did not fit either. The reason? my engine came out of truck, and it has the flywheel for a truck which is bigger for more torque??? than a Camaro flywheel. It had more teeth and a larger diameter. So now comes the million dollar question, anyone have any insight on where I can find a cover for a powerglide that was fitted for a truck engine and flywheel? Or do I take the cover I have to a job shop that deals in metal fabrication and have them "modify" this cover to fit the flywheel I have? i need about one inch more in diameter around the bottom of the cover so the teeth do not hit the cover.

General Discussion / z-28 hood stripes
« on: June 11, 2007, 11:40:18 AM »
What colors were available for the stripes on a 69 z-28? I thought I saw somewhere that there was only white and black for the Z's and also Orange for the Pace cars. What about any special order colors? Saw a 69 z that was Maroon/ Black Vinyl roof with dark grey stripes. Supposely original. Any thoughts CRG?

General Discussion / Has this ever happened to you!!!!!!!!!!!!
« on: June 11, 2007, 10:29:24 AM »
Saturday afternoon, the wife and I along with a friend in his car were driving up to Milwaukee from Kenosha to go to a Drive-in called Georgie Porgie's. They have a gathering of Muscle as well as Older cars every Saturday night during the summer months. As we were driving up I94, my right front tire let go of one of the Steel belts going 65 mph! Car shook like all heck!!!! Tire never lost air pressure but it had a huge bulge on the right edge and you could feel and see some of the steel threads protruding out the sidewall of the tire. We nursed the car home. Sunday when I got the tire off, it appeared to be dry rotten. Needless to say I replaced all four tires. Not sure how old the tires were, they were on the car when we purchased it 3 years ago. This ever happen to anyone else?

General Discussion / speedometer reading
« on: May 30, 2007, 07:03:12 PM »
Sometime back I posted a question regarding the difference in speedometer reading and the actual speed for my 67 Camaro  At 30mph on the speedometer I was actually going 39, at 40 it was 52 and at 50 it was actually 65. A 33% difference. This was based on three readings for each speed shot with a radargun from my neighbor who is a State Trooper. I was just told how to determine if the speedometer would need recalibration or if the gear in the tranny needs to be replaced.  This was told to me by a shop that rebuilds trannies and has run inot this problem on numerous occassions. The rear gear in my car is a 2:73.
Here is what I was told, find a mile marker on the highway. Look at the odometer reading when you pass the first mile mark, when you pass the second mile mark  the odometer should have move 10/10ths or 1 mile. If this is true, then the speedometer needs to be replaced or recalibrated. If the odometer move more let's say 13/10ths or 1.3 miles than the gear in the tranny has to be changed to more teeth than what is in the car now. If the odometer moves 8/10ths .8 than the gear in the tranny has to be changed to less teeth.
How does that sound? Does it make sense? ???

Maintenance / Front windshield moulding clips
« on: May 28, 2007, 06:47:18 PM »
I was cursing down the highway yesterday when all of a sudden, the right side windshield mldg and the center of the top windshield mldg came lose. I pulled off the side of the road and snapped the mldgs back onto the clips. I notice that the top piece where it came lose appeared not to secure the mldg correctly. There was a gap betweent the glass and the mldg causing wind to get under the mldg and possibly cause it to work its' way lose. The passenger side mldg layed flush with the glass but did not feel real secure. Questions??????? ???
Can the clips be positioned wrong or worn? Can they be bent or reposition without removing the front glass? Or,,,,,,,, can the bad clips be removed and replaced with new ones again without removing the front glass?

Originality / 67 350 Air cleaner
« on: May 21, 2007, 07:10:17 PM »
This past weekend, I went to a small show in western Wisconsin. At this show and swap meet we saw some air cleaners that the parties selling stated were for 67 350 SS's Camaros. Problem was they were different from each other. Both were about 16" in diameter with the snorkel on the drivers side. One had smooth metal  surface around the diameter, the other had slight indentations around the diameter and top. Question CRG ??? Were there two different air cleaners used in 67 on the SS 350 or is one for some other application or from a earlier or later year? Both of the snorkel were closed with no Vacumn tube or opening if that helps.

Thanks

Dave
