Decoding/Numbers / Re: Help to decode a SBC please

L48 was not offered on SS Impala in '69.  Engines were restricted to 427 only in either 390 or 425hp versions.  My brother has one with the 390 and THM400.  Car is a blast to cruise in and he uses all of that 390hp to launch it when challenged by anyone thinking it is a 307 sled.

Listing mentions lower production numbers vs 500 as a maximum.  Has there been any further indication that 500 total is the real production volume?

Thanks for the feedback.  I picked up a bottle of the Meguiars cleaner and used it in a couple of spots as a check to satisfy my curiosity .  It appears to do a good job of pulling out the majority of the contaminants when scrubbed with an old piece of terry cloth.   I'll give it a shot in a few days with a soft brush to determine the full effect.  Looks promising so far...

Maintenance / Convertible Top Cleaner
« on: May 07, 2015, 04:32:54 PM »
Does anyone with a white convertible top know of a cleaner that is effective?   I have a nice top on the car but due to sitting for years in my dad's garage with no cover on it, it looks like the dust dulled and slightly discolored it.  I really don't want to use something like white side wall cleaner on it due to the effect it could have on the material.  I searched the subject here and nothing came up so I started this thread. Thanks for the help.

WIth an M21 and 3.55 gears it must have been a chore to drive that car in traffic.

Backing plate looks like the one I have in a misc box of parts in the back garage so I would say it is assembly line.  Took mine off an LM1 automatic car I parted out in the late 70's.  THM350 and 12 bolt that ran and drove.  It was junk as it needed rear quarters.  I know... I have nightmares over that lapse of judgement.

Kurt - The carb for one of my cars had those holes with long squirters that shot from the primary side into the secondaries when I got it.  So I got another throttle body and drove the car.  Now I wouldn't mind getting the original throttle body repaired.  Did you use something like JB Weld or Epoxy to fill the holes?  Just curious.  Obviously don't want any material finding its way into the cylinder at speed.

Hate to say it, but from my experience solving the problem didn't matter much then and doesn't today either.  It's all about PROCESS and PROTOCOL at the General in many areas....

Restoration / Flash Chrome - Recommendations for a reputable shop?
« on: December 05, 2014, 02:50:08 PM »
I want to get my original 69 big block valve covers re-plated in the original "flash chrome".  I searched the forum on the subject and didn't turn up anything definitive.   Anyone have recommendations for reputable shops with REASONABLE prices that can duplicate the finish?  I have no interest in triple chrome mirror like plating.  Trying to get the ball rolling on this so I can get all the original engine bay pieces back on the car for next spring.  Thanks in advance to everyone for your feedback.

That is a rare piece if it actually is a factory big block Z10 car.  Did the owner indicate if it is a manual or auto trans?  A/C?  Even if it sat out for years, Oklahoma climate is pretty easy on metal compared to the Northeast.  Might still be in restorable condition.  PICS?

Steve restored my booster and it was worth every penny.  BTW take his advice and have your booster halves polished prior to plating.  The end result is excellent...

Isn't MM Royal Plum paint?   I love that color when it's done right.  Warm over that 6 banger with a cam and a clifford intake and it could be a really nice cruiser.  I like it.

Maintenance / Re: 1969 2-piece Rotor to Hub Bolt Torque
« on: January 21, 2014, 03:54:00 PM »
Thanks 1968RSZ28 for the link- From that information, it looks like unless these mated hubs/rotors were index marked prior to disassembly, they could be out of balance when assembled again.  Starting to look like more time and trouble than these things are worth. LOL

Thanks gents for the quick response.   Seems the rotors on these 2-pc units I'm looking to pick up were removed from the hubs long ago and recently turned to about .980 inches with some unknown bolts holding them in place.  I suspected that the combination might have to be turned again after assembly with correct bolts to make them true.  Bolts probably should be at least grade 5 if not grade 8.  I'll have to check my original assembled units for head markings and then buy new bolts and have re-turned.  Further comments/recommendations welcome.
