General Discussion / Re: 12 Bolt Axle Asm Weight
« on: August 22, 2018, 08:18:10 PM »
Thanks for all of the interest and feedback.  We are trying to do this remote control at this point and the seller isn't set up to weigh it.  Again, this is a complete drum to drum axle with all internals. I hope nobody thinks they're still 10 feet tall and bulletproof and attempts to tote one over to a scales.  My mind says I can still do things that my body can't live up to.  Getting old is humbling!  If all else fails I will tell the freight company it is 225 lbs. and hope that covers it.

General Discussion / 12 Bolt Axle Asm Weight
« on: August 21, 2018, 06:19:35 PM »
Does anyone have an accurate weight for a typical 12 bolt Camaro axle assembly?  I'm working with my brother to have his axle shipped and the freight company requires weight for their quote.  I'm guessing it might be around 200lbs.  I conducted a search and there was only one thread that stated the housing was around 90lbs.  The former owner has no means of weighing it.  Any help is appreciated.

$400 per side for NOS would be a bargain for '69 inners.  If your car is going to be really nice, I'd spring for the NOS GM parts. I tried a '69 repro pass side and sent it back.  Bought used GM and no issues. My two cents...

No.  Unique tubular type cross member for the THM-400.  Mounts to the rear or the THM-350 position.

William - A former colleague of mine used to race a '68 Z car around the Detroit Metro area as a kid.  He preferred a 4.10/M20 combination for street duty.  Odd that it was cancelled, other than warranty as you stated.  Thanks again for the information.

William - I found the following information interesting:
"...As of June, 1969 Chevrolet dropped the 4.10 ratio as a Z/28 option."
Is there documentation indicating why the 4.10 was dropped from a car that actually benefits from more ratio?  Did the cancellation go into effect for orders received in June and beyond?  I have noticed that I have found no late production Z cars with 4.10's but it didn't occur to me that Chevrolet actually cancelled the RPO.  I am adding notes to my reference data base and would like to include this information update. Thanks.

Originality / Re: Z-Bar / Clutch Bellcrank Plug
« on: February 22, 2018, 08:04:35 PM »
Regarding the poster's question: "This might be a dumb question, are the bars tapped for a Zerk under the plug?"  I recently removed(and saved) the original orange plug from my Z bar to install a grease fitting.  The hole was not tapped and I had to tap the hole to install the grease fitting.  Mixed emotions at altering the originality, but my car never is going to be judged at a show.  That tipped the scales toward the service side of the equation and the zerk fitting went in.

I have a Fathom Green car that had body colored rockers.  No blackout on this car.

Garage Talk / Re: Rare L72 69 Impala SS

69 SS B-cars came in two 427 configurations only:  390hp and 425hp.  NO A/C on 425hp versions.  My brother has had a 390hp version for 30 years.  Impressive for a big car.  But the L72 would increase the fun factor by quite a bit.

The Holley on my big block does the same thing.  More noticeable since I pulled off the cowl hood flap for full time cool air, providing a noise path.

421 gen 1 small block maybe?  That might be enough small block for a big block guy...

Agree..L79 intake.  Look at the 90 degree bend in the intake runner.

Mild Modifications / Re: New pipes are next: Any opinions?

The C1 Vettes with dual quad and FI systems had the dual exhaust cross over pipe at the front of the oil pan.  My '60 270hp job was set up that way.  It ran strong and had a unique tone.  Miss that car.

It never ceases to amaze me that someone would expend the energy to cut a die set for a part and not get it right.  With 3-D scanning available there should be no excuse for putting out parts like the repro's shown.  Who is doing the trade work and where?  Are they blind?  Sad.

Agreed - Do NOT use synthetic.  I made that mistake before I consulted this forum and my shift quality was horrible in a freshly rebuilt M20.  Box had about 150 miles on it when I drained and replaced with the mineral based GL-4(?) spec and it is like a different gear box.  Much better shift quality.
