Restoration / 1969 Camaro Rally Wheel restoration
« on: July 06, 2023, 12:03:49 AM »
Any suggestions with removing black spray paint from original rally wheels. Used 3000 psi pressure power washer that removed some of the
black spray paint. 1/2 of the black paint still there. Original Argent silver baked finish still on rally wheels and in good condition. Last resort is
to spray paint on Argent silver. Thanks for any suggestions.

Originality / 1969 z/28 steering wheel
« on: September 28, 2016, 01:06:54 AM »
Was looking at my Body Broadcast sheet for early (Oct 1968) built z28 camaro. Box 59, "Strg Wheel", on Body Broadcast sheet  has "EA" in Box. Trying to determine what type of steering wheel vehicle came with. I could not find a reference to "EA" code.

Any suggestions of where to look?

Restoration / Rebuilding original cylinder heads 1969 z28
« on: March 19, 2016, 12:49:02 AM »
I'm in the process of having my original cylinder heads rebuilt.  Machine shop indicated that he would use umbrella type of valve seals on intake valves with the "O" ring seals too, and just the "O" ring seal for the exhaust. He will have to modify the head for the umbrella seal. There have been comments on CRG that if possible do not use pressed in valve seats as well as to have cast iron valve stem guides installed.

Is there a thread or information as to what the best practices should be used to have the original number matching cylinder heads rebuilt?

Originality / Cooling fan - 3937779
« on: March 10, 2016, 10:18:08 PM »
Wanted to get the correct cooling fan for my early produced Z (Oct 1968). According to CRG forum, the correct fan blade should be 3937779. According to the ncrs group, Early 69 Z28's used fan # 3937779 made by Schwitzer and fan # 3947838 made by Hayes-Albion sometimes stamped "84" (both 2" pitch).

So, can I use the 3937779 or 3947838 fan ?

Thank you

General Discussion / Chambered exhaust
« on: February 25, 2016, 05:00:05 PM »
Looking for comments from anyone that has chambered exhaust system on their 1969 Z28. I am getting ready to order chambered exhaust from Gardner for my early (Oct 1968) LOS produced
69Z. It came from the factory with chambered, so I thought, I would get chambered exhaust again.

I have heard that the Chambered is noisy and tinny sounding. I will be using the cast iron exhaust manifolds. The car is not a show car but will be driven for pleasure and fun.

So, my questions are,

If you have installed Chambered exhaust on your 69Z are you happy with it ?

Would you install a different exhaust system after having experienced the chambered exhaust system performance and noise ?

Thank you

Restoration / Interior restoration
« on: February 10, 2016, 12:25:59 AM »
Who makes the best interior floor carpet and standard front door panels for a restoration. Early built (Oct 1968) 1969 Z28 with 711 black interior. I have the original two piece carpet, a little worn, would like to replace. My standard door panels also are original, but the original owner installed speakers in the door panel.

Thanks.

I joined the Camaro Research Group on October 17, 2005 in an effort to obtain information regarding my 1969 Z28 Camaro. I wanted to verify that the 1969 Z28 that I
had purchased, VIN #124379L505424, with approx. 55,000 miles and no documentation was an authentic Z28. The engine block was a CE block and had some after-market parts. The drive train was original as well as most of the remaining vehicle components including the interior (except the steering wheel). I began to read posts and engage in spirited discussions. I also began to verify the parts that the vehicle came with had the part numbers CRG which indicated the parts would be in a 1969 Z28. After verifying all that I could, I came to the conclusion that the Z28 that I had purchased was an original Z.

There was still some doubt, however, since I did not have any documentation and the car did not have all original parts. Then on July 20, 2015, Kurt Sonen sent me an email stating “Alan, Your lucky day. Your Z's docs have been found and were just listed on ebay”.

On Friday July 25, 2015 I picked up the documents from David N. who listed the documents on ebay. This day was the day that my orphaned 1969 Z28 Hugger Orange Camaro with 79,224 original miles was re-united with its birth documents (i.e. Factory Invoice, Body Build (Broadcast) Sheet, Chassis Build Sheet, haul away truck company Shipper Form and GMAC Dealer Trade Letter) and now was no longer orphaned, proving that its pedigree was a 1969 Z28 Camaro.

Thanks to Kurt, Warren and David N. (who recovered the documents); my1969 Z28 Camaro has been authenticated.

Originality / 1969 z28 camaro - intake and exhaust valves
« on: May 17, 2013, 01:32:58 AM »
looking to replace all my exhaust valves and intake valves with a fresh set. My local
GM dealer informed me that part numbers 3849814 (intake) and 3849818 (exhaust) as well as
part numbers 12363753(intake) and 12363754(exhaust) are no loner available.

Does gm offer intake and exhaust valves for the 1969 z28 302 engine?

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Restoration / vehicle assembly date
« on: March 02, 2008, 05:17:32 PM »
I was trying to decipher the information about the assembly date of a 1969 z28. But, I'm not sure if I got it correct.
What would the vehicle assembly date be for an early built 1969 z28 with a Trim tag date of 10D (October of 1968).
I have a ce block. Engine components, Transmission, rear end, and door panels dated around August and/or September of 1968.

Thank you

Originality / Painting of body components 1969 z28
« on: November 26, 2007, 09:35:52 PM »
John Z,

Were various components of 1969 camaro's painted separately. For example, were doors, fenders, front upper and lower
valance panels, painted separate.

This weekend I began to tear apart the front of my 1969 z28 (early build oct 68). I took out the upper valance
and noticed that the painted stipes were painted even under the valance. Though not as clean or accurate as
the top of the panel.

I included some pics that show this. Which indicates that some panels were painted separately.

Originality / 1969 z28 block 4 bolt main caps
« on: November 05, 2007, 01:47:26 AM »
My understanding is that the 302 engines for the 1969 model year and maybe the CE replacement
performance engines came with the 2482 (casting number) on the 4 bolt main caps.

Are these superior 4 bolt main caps?

Does the absence of the 2482 main caps indicate that the block was not originally a heavy duty
or performance block from GM?

Originality / 1969 z28 Driveshaft (early build 10d)
« on: November 03, 2007, 09:04:47 PM »
I am trying to decode the numbers that are cast into the end of my driveshaft.

The numbers are 3790024.

The chevrolet symbol is also cast under those numbers.

I also have found some yellow stripes towards the middle of the driveshaft that go around
the shaft itself.

Are the numbers, the chevrolet symbol, and the stripes consistent with an original
driveshaft.

The yoke ends are also offset.

I have included some pictures to help the decoding.

Restoration / 1969 oil pump
« on: October 27, 2007, 05:37:04 PM »
How can I tell if I have the original 302 engine high volume oil pump.

Are their any numbers cast into it?

Does it look different?

Are the internal gears larger than other low volume oil pumps (I read that somewhere)?

Restoration / Rear Stripes - again
« on: May 29, 2007, 12:44:30 AM »
To Jerry,

I had an earlier post regarding the rear stripes on a early build 1969 z28 (october 1968).
The stripes begin under the rear glass as though it had come with a vinyl top. The trim
tag under the hood does not support the vinyl top theory. The spoiler has the tell tale
signs of being dealer installed. Have you ever seen this before? I also do not see any signs
of an accident.

So if you can help me solve why the stripes start lower than other 69Z's without a vinyl
top, I would appreciate it.

Pics attached.
