General Discussion / Re: JL8 Front Brakes
« on: April 21, 2011, 02:31:47 PM »
Did he change the rearend also?
Thanks for the info, it appears to be exactly what was done to my car.  There is a small piece of brake line that had to be modified for the JL8 brakes to be used.  My father-in-law took JL8 front brakes off his wrecked Z28 and put them on the Z28 I am restoring.

I did this changeover in the mid 70's. Took everything off of the JL-8 car down to the spindles. The front brake lines were different also, took them all the way back to the master cyl.

My 12C California car came to me in 75 with a 12/18/68 YH wheel and original tire in the trunk. The other wheels had been changed.

Hotchkis is the way to go, my son was going to put Competition Engineering on His 67 and he would have had to pound the heck out of the floor. Sent them back and got the Hotchkis, they fit great.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: 1111150 Distributer

Wow, I pulled it out of a 67 camaro at a wrecking yard in 1971, the motor had a four barrel on it and the fender had a 350 emblem on it. Must have been some early parts swapping going on!

And swap meets when every "pristine" part wasn't worth a small or large fortune.

I have a first edition that I got in 1978. I had owned Z-28's since 1972, and was amazed by all the info in the book. There wasn't a huge amount of info available at that time. No internet etc., I had a few poeple across the country that I conversed with, mostly all word of mouth.

I have not tried a light wheel on my car. It also has the 140 cam and 4.10's, but a close ratio trans. Even though the lower first in the trans will help my personal opinion would be no for the street. Maybe some others have used them and will have better info.

Maintenance / Re: Disc Drum Brake Master Cyl
« on: April 03, 2009, 02:39:13 PM »
The brakes are working! Very strange finding, maybe someone can shed some light on this. I decided to start comparing brake linkage with my 69, my son's car is a 67, both cars have power brakes the 67 was drum-drum, we switched to disc fronts and changed master cyl. My 69 is a disc brake car. The push rod on my son's car was in the upper hole on the brake pedal, the 69 was in the lower hole, which the assy. manual says is for J-50 option. The 67 had a return spring on the linkage which is for manual only I believe. I figured someone along the way must have converted it to power brakes, and not put the push rod in the proper hole. The strange part is he has been driving the car for years, I have driven it also, and it had good brake pedal with the old system.
Anyway it has pedal now and stops fine.
Thanks for all the info     Pat
