Originality / Re: 68 396 L34 Q-jet vacuum to AIR valve

Yes, my L48 has the thermostatically controlled air cleaner, but my point was that all 1969 L48 engines have the vacuum port in question and that it is used, with or without A.I.R.

Ah, I see what you're saying. Thanks for that info.

Martin, where was the date stamp? I've checked mine from stem to stern and can't find anything.

Yes, as Boston14 notes, it's my understanding that autos were not fitted with AIR.

No, as per the 1967-1969 Camaro Emission Systems report:

Quote
In 1968 and 1969, the California and federal emissions requirements were the same and all cars were built to the same 50-state standard. The AIR system was installed on all L6 cars with manual transmissions, all small blocks with manual transmissions, and all Camaros with big blocks. (Chevelles and full-size cars with the 396/325hp engine and TH400 transmission were the only 68-69 Chevrolet big block cars that did not have smog pumps.) Only the automatic L6 and automatic small block Camaros did not have smog pumps, instead they had the simpler Controlled Combustion System. Generally speaking, an automatic car required less aggressive emission control than a manual transmission car because the engine load (and carburetor fuel metering consistency) was more stable and predictable.

Thus, the only engines NOT equipped with A.I.R. were the L6 with automatic transmission, and small blocks with automatic transmission. All other Camaros received the A.I.R. system. Boston14 has the 350 with automatic, so he had the CCS system.

There's nothing stamped on the pump (or the housing) on mine, and it's the original. (sitting in a box in the garage, but original!)

I believe (and John will correct me if I'm wrong), that any CCS carb (non-A.I.R.) wouldn't even have that vacuum fitting. However, since all big blocks in 1968 came with A.I.R., the correct carb for your L34/M40 (7028218-EH) would have that fitting and it would have been used.

Can someone help me get a NICB Report?

Nikke, I highly doubt anyone in law enforcement would risk their job for this. Several years ago it wasn't such a big deal, but now it's scrutinized so much that you better have a VERY good reason to do the inquiry!

Ed - do you know of any source for new rotors for a 67-68 two piece setup?

No, unfortunately you have to get the hub and rotor assembly. I don't know of anyone selling just the rotor.

This is a old thread but i have a reduction with part number 6479236. Is this for camaro or for what?  Ratio is  1: .950

Finally finished moving and was able to dig out my books. That P/N "appears" to be for a 1970's car, so it's not correct for a 1st gen Camaro. Most of the 67-69 Camaro adapters are 6476xxx numbers.

Okay, here's an update... Got the calipers back from Vette Brakes and installed them last Wednesday, and so far so good (knock wood)! Haven't driven the car a lot, so not a good test until we do, but the pedal feels great and they stop on a dime and give nine cents change!

Keep our fingers crossed...

Mild Modifications / Re: 12 Bolt brake line T-Block on 69 Camaro Z28?
« on: December 01, 2010, 02:22:49 AM »
Starting late in the 1968 model year, they went to the intergrated tee built into the line. My 05D (68) has it. I haven't done a lot of research on this, but it appears that late April or early May, 1968 is the changeover date.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: 68 Vin and POP

My real question was it a RS from the factory based on the POP info.

Allen, the POP won't show the Z22 option, so the only way to tell a RS car from a non RS car is to do a little detective work and examine the "signs". While the RS option can be added, most people don't go through the trouble of routhing the backup lights wire (and grommet) through the trunk floor (see the picture below), so that's usually a pretty good indicator. Although you can't use this as a "for sure", it's one of the better signs that the car left the factory as an RS. You also need to look at the firewall and compare the RS piercings to what's shown in the AIM.

The 1111150 Distributor was used on the 1967 283/195 (all exc. 3 speed) engines installed in the Full Size passenger cars, Novas and Chevelles. Yours is dated April 26th, 1967.

General Discussion / Re: 68 camaro pontiac am/fm radio

Yes, the lens on the Camaro is slightly tinted (kind of a light blue) and the Firebird is clear, and the background (behind the red needle) is a little darker in the Camaro than the Firebird. Probably because of the tint in the Camaro lens.

However, very few people would be able to tell the difference just looking at it.

68 Camaro

67 Firebird (a little different radio than the 68 version, but the colors are the same)

I get Jan 3rd week 1968 - Camaro327/210hp - w/ automatic trans... may be others besides though.

Randy, you're close. January 3rd, 1968. Not 3rd week. And just the Camaro 327/210 with automatic. No other applications.
