Decoding/Numbers / Re: 68 GM part numbers

Do you know of any references i can get in regarding to GM part numbers?

ebay is a good source for the P&A's, but they're usually very expensive. However, a few years ago a fellow Corvair enthusiast (yes, I like Corvairs) scanned in all his Corvair P&A's and Shop Manuals for us. In time, he also scanned in a few others, and the 1967 P&A 34 and the 1971 P&A 30M were among them.

And if you have a Corvair, here's the MAIN PAGE ("Shop Manuals" and "Parts Catalogs" links at the upper left corner).

Enjoy, and make sure you send him a big thanks!

I checked both my 1969 Hollander and 1969 Mitchell interchange manuals and the only true interchange for the 67-69 Camaro is the 67-69 Firebird. However, there's a note in the Mitchell interchange manual that says the 68 and 69 Nova will interchange "by switching outlet tanks as necessary".

No, you have to look under U25, U26, U27, U28 and U29.

Marty, most of your measurement questions and drawings can be found in the AIM. If you don't have one, let me know and I'll scan in the pages for you, or you can download a PDF copy HERE. Be aware it's almost 40MB, so dial-up will be slow (if anyone still uses dial-up!!)

The orange glovebox wire was part of the production dash harness on all cars so that won't help. (It was taped off if not used.)

U29 was only available as a stand alone factory option in 67.

For 68 and 69, it was part of the ZJ9 Auxiliary Lighting Group, but like John said above, it was also available as a dealer installed option (P/N 987256 for 68 and P/N 993607 for 69).

M20 indicates a "4 speed manual transmission", not necessarily the Muncie. The Saginaw 4 speed was also coded M20. You can read more HERE.

Hard to tell from the picture, but appears to be T0204EM, which is a 1966 Chevelle (or El Camino) 396/325 with Powerglide and A.I.R.

6Z129002 is the VIN from a 1966 Chevelle (or El Camino) assembled at the Fremont, CA plant.

The trim tag doesn't show this car to be a big block or even an SS350 (No group 4 code).

E =Tinted glass (all)
2L = M20 (or M21) floor shift
2G = Console

Look in the back of your owner's manual and you'll see that HELM, INC was (and still is) the original publisher for service literature for GM (as well as other companies) cars and trucks. Shop manuals, owner's manuals, overhaul manuals, service manuals, etc... However, I don't believe they have anything for the first genenration Camaro any longer except the shop and overhaul manuals.

Mark, post the pictures again. They're no longer showing up. It's good reference material to have!

Originality / Re: 67 SHOCK I.D. DECALS
« on: January 07, 2011, 04:13:07 PM »
That sounds about right.

I no longer have the original shocks on my Camaro, but up until a few months ago, I DID have the original shocks on my 69 Corvair. You can see the locations of the tags (or at least what's left of them) in the below pictures.

I have a pair o NOS rear shocks, so I knew what the decal looked like, and where it went.

Where were the tags for those located?

Did all the shocks that were installed at the factory have the 2 letter I.D. sticker on them?

Yes, all cars came with the stickers.

Can someone tell me the approximate location where the stick should be placed?

There's no set location. I've seen them all over the place. Some up high where the weather couldn't get to them, and some set low that were all torn up.

General Discussion / Re: Anyone have this 68 Camaro in their Database?

Sorry Dean. It's not in the database, but from the VIN the car was built in the mid January, 1968 time frame.

This sounds like a good Mythbusters episode!!

"How much pressure can a tire inflator bottle take before it explodes?"

(I sure hope the hot girl gets this one!!)
