Without a VIN it's close to impossible to track a car down. What's the plate number?

Mike, I moved your thread to the General Discussion area since the orphans section is for loose documentation and VIN-stamped drivetrain components only.

I checked the database and your car isn't in there, but I've added it so we'll keep an eye out. I also checked the NICB to see if it's on the stolen list, but it's not there either. It may be because it was so long ago. I don't know how many years they keep the cars in their database.

Do you know which engine the car originally had (L35, L34, L78, L89)? Any pictures? I know you only had it a few weeks, but it's always cool to see original pictures when cars were new!

No, the 69 COPO 9560 TI installed from the factory used the 37 amp alternator. The 42 amp alternator was just another option available to any car (with the exceptions noted above).

Not much to it really. If you wanted a 42 amp alternator instead of the standard 37 amp, you could stipulate K79 on the option list. The only cars it wasn't available on were A/C cars and the Z28.

In addition to what John mentions above, there was also additional bracketry and hardware for the kickdown, idle stop solenoid, etc... on the automatic carbs.

Was there or is there a Chevy database that kept records of vehicles sold by dealership where VIN's can be cross-referenced to specific dealerships?

Only if your car was sold new in Canada.

Can anyone confirm this is a real L78 car or not?

Your link isn't working, but I'm assuming you're referring to THIS CAR.

When it was on ebay back in 08 (by the same seller by the way), there was no paperwork and the engine was "date correct". Now two and a half years later there's paperwork and it's now numbers matching, so there you go.

I believe the sellers own disclaimer says it all

"The seller shall not be responsible for the correct description, authenticity, genuineness, or defects herein, and makes no warranty in connection therewith."

Originality / Re: Convertible Rear Speaker
« on: July 23, 2011, 08:50:59 PM »
If your car came with U63 (AM mono radio) or U69 (AM/FM mono radio), it would have come with a single front speaker in the dash. However, you could also order U80 (single rear speaker) if you wanted.

If your car came with U57 (8 Track stereo tape player) or U79 (AM/FM Stereo radio), then it would have automatically come with two front and two rear speakers.

Lawrence, the 69 AIM (UPC U80, sheet A1) shows the part numbers and installation. However, I highly doubt you'll find a new original speaker (P/N 7300614), but THIS GUY supposedly has one. They're available used on ebay from time to time, so check there. As a matter of fact, HERE'S one now.

The rest is available reproduction from places like RICK'S. (Do a search on speaker)

Here's what the housing looks like:

Gary, I'm not sure on the one on the right, but according to the P&A, every 1960-1968 engine (execpt the big block) used the same nut, P/N 3744341 (3/8" x 24). That's the one on the left.

The big blocks used P/N 3896648 (7/8" x 20).

I have an SS hood, with a date code 48. Is this the 48th week of the year?

Correct.

Also any differences between 67 and 68?

Yes, the 67 didn't have the drain holes like the 68 and 69 did, and there were even differences between the 350 and the 396 hood in 67!

67 350 - 3898129
67 396 - 3909158
68 350/396 - 3919102
69 350/396 - 3938619

So with the right side speedometer cable, and 4P code, SS350, and not the L30/ M20?

Yes. They didn't start using the 4P designation on the L30/M20 until (approx) late December of 1966.
