General Discussion / Re: 1969 Camaro passenger door mirror location

HERE'S one on ebay right now and it doesn't have the template or instructions either, so I would guess P/N 3914754 didn't come with them.

Ed  I don't believe this knob ever had the chrome bottom.

Yes, it did. It came that way from service. Production line knobs had two separate part numbers, but service combined these two parts into one number that included both the black knob and the chrome base. I'm not sure why yours has an extra hole drilled and taped in it unless it was done by a prior owner, but here's what should have been included in the box:

1967 Firebird all with 4 speed and floor shifter. Note that this one (P/N 390768) was superceeded by 3921147 which also fit 67 Camaro 4 speed, 68-69 Camaro 4 speed floor shift w/o console, 68-69 Nova with 4 speed floor shift, 68-69 Chevelle with 4 speed floor shift and 68-69 Corvair with 4 speed.

However, yours is missing the chrome piece.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: No cowl Tag - can it be reproduced?
« on: December 16, 2011, 08:34:22 PM »
Jesper, looking at THIS THREAD, it appears you asked this a few years ago, but I guess you never got a reply.

To be honest, we don't condone reproduction trim tags because they're mostly used to fake cars. For example, there are now more 69 Z28's in the world than the factory originally built because of these fake tags.

There's no real way to create a trim tag based on your VIN - 124679N697074 - because the data's now gone. The only other information would be the build date, paint and interior codes and the Fisher body number. Your car would have come with an X code, but without paperwork, there's no way to know what any of this would be, so my vote is to just leave things as they are and not worry about it.

Welcome to the group. I'm assuming since you were able to post, you got your secret agent decoder ring working correctly!!

Anyway, to maybe clear it up a little for you (maybe not since it gets really complicated), here's what I've found:

1. 986973 is the 1966 "sales" part number for the Ski Rack assembly and was used on all models. (This part number was superceeded in 1967 by P/N 987066, and then again later in 1967 by P/N 987196, and was used on all models except station wagons and the El Camino.)

2. The "correct" Luggage Rack for use on the 1967 Camaro is P/N 986914, which is the original "sales" part number. 986469 was a "service" part number for "all" models from 1965 through 1967. This replacement "service" item probably isn't the same as the original "sales" item since it was designed to include "all" models. (Also note that another number, 987141, was a "service" part number used in 1967, and was used on all models EXCEPT the Camaro).

3. In 1967 the Camaro and Corvette used the same Luggage Rack assembly ("sales" P/N 986914), with the Corvette requiring a 986451 adapter.

You have to remember that "sales" part numbers and "service" part numbers may not necessarily be the same. Service part numbers were usually designed to fit multiple models.

Not sure how rare the Ski Rack is, but I've only seen one in all the years I've been dealing with the first generation Camaro. I had one on a 68 I owned MANY years ago.

Was 9665 for the new turbo 350 tests ?

It's unknown exactly what it was used for. All we know is that it supposedly included a "special transmission". The 68 Camaro Turbo 350 test cars were fitted with L30 engines and a EN suffix code.

I'm not sure what you're asking, but it's from a 1969 Camaro assembled at the Norwood, Ohio plant.

No hurry Doug. We've waited 44 years for documentation. We can wait a few days more!!

Hi Doug and welcome to the site. Yes, if you could send me pictures of the POP, the engine pad and any other documents you have, I'd appreciate it. My email address is in my profile to the left.

The 1968 350 MF code has long been thought to be an urban legend. It was supposedly used for the COPO 9665 (special transmission), but no authentication (original docs) have ever come to light to verify this. If you have substantiating documentation, we'd love to see it.

No, the one you have is the version with the screws that hold it to the panel. Correct for the Camaro. The Pontiac version doesn't have the two screws.

That's the correct mirror for 69 built after the August, 1968 timeframe.

HERE'S more info, and HERE'S even more info.

Yeah, part numbers are a little strange. P/N 993595 was the "assembly" from the 1969 Chevrolet Accessories manual, and came with the mirror, hardware, instructions and template. P/N 3914754 that William posted was a service part number and also consisted of the mirror and hardware, but I don't think (and William can verify this) it came with the instructions or template.

I've been under the impression that there wre no passenger side mirrors available (from the factory) in '69....   True or not?

See reply #1 above.

Am I correct in assuming that any mirror mounted to the passenger door by a dealer would have been the LH mirror just mounted on the RH side?

Not correct. GM offered a right side (passenger) mirror for most cars and trucks in the 60's. They just weren't "factory" installed.

For example, the original P/N for the 1969 Camaro Remote driver's side mirror was 3957203. The P/N for the standard Camaro driver's side mirror was 3914753. The P/N for the 1969 Camaro Passenger's side mirror was 993595.
