Originality / Re: 68 BBC Battery to Engine Ground Wire Location

Yeah, it's just one more example of the repop houses getting it wrong. There should be two studs and two bolts.

One stud at the upper (driver side) water pump mount for the alternator and AIR pump braces, one stud at the upper (passenger side) water pump mount for the battery ground cable, and two bolts for the lower water pump mounting.

I checked and found the order is star washer, cable eye and then nut. Is that what '68 BB uses too?

Yep. That's the order.

Chris, look at UPC L34 sheet A2.5 and you'll see under "UPC 12 Electrical" that the "12A Battery and Leads" has a circle (half black/half white) which indicates "Assembles same as production". It's the same for the L35 engine.

However, you'll see there's no such note for the L78, but looking at the list, a lot of the items stipulate "Assembles same as RPO L35" so you can ususally go by that.

In the AIM, if it's not specificly mentioned in the RPO section you're looking at that it's different, it's generally going to be the same as the producton engines.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: 1100637 Alternator?
« on: March 07, 2012, 10:00:51 PM »
The alternator is for a 1963 Pontiac Tempest with a V8 engine. The pulley is the same, but it was also used on other models and years as well.

Did the 1969 Z/28's come with the GM Mark of Excellence badge on the inside the door jams.

Nope.

It's not uncommon for shops to want to deck the block. However, tell them to stop before they get to the suffix and VIN. If they don't know what you're talking about, or don't want to (or CAN'T) do this, find yourself another machine shop.

At the minimum, take several HIGH RESOLUTION pictures of the deck before anyone touches it.

As Kurt posted above, the L34 and L35 engines for 1969 got the EH (manual transmission) or FF (automatic transmission) carb.

General Discussion / Re: I have a 1967 Camaro with no antenna.....
« on: February 24, 2012, 05:08:43 AM »
If you have no antenna and the fender hasn't been replaced, then your car didn't come with a radio. Factory AM (and AM/FM) radios automatically came with an antenna and there was no way to order one without.

Thanks Troy and Martin.

Like Troy said, we've discussed this car off the forum and even though I found a lot of issues, Troy found a TON more! And yes, I agree that POP is a "reproduction", aged to make it appear old.

For future reference, the VIN is 124678N327997 and the body number is 28397

Derby caps. "Disk Brake" caps were only used in 67.

General Discussion / Re: 1969 Camaro Wiring Diagrams
« on: February 20, 2012, 05:51:43 PM »
Bill, in my opinion, GM factory wiring diagrams were horrible. They never seemed to make any sense to me. It took me many years before I could even figure out the basics! Even when I could find a set that was readable!

That being said, Larry DuBois created a set in color for the 69 several years ago and even though I have a 68, I still use his for reference since they actually make sense! I emailed Larry a few months ago to see if he was planning on creating a set for 67 and 68, but as yet, no plans. But I keep my hopes up.

Anyway, he still sells the 69 set so drop him an email at dsrtracing@beyondbb.com and see how much they're going for now.

General Discussion / Re: 69 L78 Question
« on: February 20, 2012, 12:35:25 AM »
I'm not sure where you're getting your information from, but according to the 1970-1975 CBTN, the L78 was available with the Turbo 400 in 1970 on the Camaro, Nova and Chevelle.

Engine codes for the 70 Camaro L78 with the Turbo 400 were CJL and CTY. HERE'S a great thread (although somewhat old, so none of the pictures show up), regarding the "27 out of 600" L78's with the Turbo 400.

August 16th, 1968 would have been for a 1969 model. The 1968 Camaro was out of production by then.
