Restoration / Re: new quater panels
« on: October 30, 2005, 04:02:27 PM »
I wouldn't begin to think about touching a project like this without a fully equipped shop/garage.  At a minimum, you ned air power.  A Dremel will take eons (and tons of wheels) to cut quarters off.  You'll have spot welds to remove, and lots of work to do.  Blowing decades of dirt and dust out of crevices, grinding metal to a clean usable surface, etc.  LOTS of work before you can just start slapping a new 1/4 on and migging it up.

If you'd rather not invest in the tools for the job, I might suggest towing the car to a shop to have the old 1/4 panels cut off and removed properly.  The end result will be far better and well worth it.

Maintenance / Re: 67 RS drivers door is locked and won't open

I guess I would think that you could use a lock out tool such as a slim jim to get the door unlocked. At least then you won't have to work on the door while it's closed. Good luck with it.

If the mechanism is jammed/frozen, no slimjim will solve it ;)

Originality / Re: 1968 Body
« on: October 29, 2005, 02:24:23 PM »
I'd check (at least the rear quarters) for bondo or a welded patch over the marker light opening to determine if it is a legit '68 body.  There are of course the options as noted above for things to have been changed as well, but I would indeed be researching things carefully to see what you have.

It seems like the mechanism inside the door is broken. Does anyone have any suggestions on getting this fixed?

thanks

You're going to get to have fun.

You'll be removing the door panel from INSIDE the car with the door closed.  You may find it easier to remove the seats first, then work on the panel.  That will allow you access to the lock mechanism inside to repair or remove it.

Sheesh, I feel bad for Kurt's wife.  All this praise is going to make his head bigger, he may be unbearable to live with ;)

See, I'm smart - I sit back and let the writings happen by those who do such a fine job of it, I just occasionally read them ;)

Thanks Arno. I'll have to see if I can find "Rick's," and see what they have available.
Are they online I wonder, or just mail order catalog?

Decoding/Numbers / Re: CE or CEA block codes for small bocks, Got DATA?
« on: October 28, 2005, 02:10:22 AM »
A CE block, or assembly represents a major repair. You don't get a CE engine because a lifter started ticking, or a valve started leaking oil and started puffing blue smoke and the engine needed to be torn down and individual components replaced. You had to do some major damage to the engine for GM to even consider replacement. A 10% failure rate in a major component of any companies product line (or even 5% since I'm sure GM made more than 1 million cars with small blocks in 69 across the Chevy line) would rapidly bankrupt that company. Probably why you only get a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty today. Do you know anyone who has ever got a brand new engine (or a short or long block) out of GM under warranty lately?

It's 3/36 these days, Mark ;)

And yes, I know many folks that have received entire assemblies under warranty.  Actually, in the 60's/70's, more repair work would be performed before an assembly was replaced.  Today, with complexity of things and the time involved in repair, it's more expeditious to replace the entire assembly, send the defective one back for reman and move on.

what exactly is a newbie and how is this demeaning name taken off my posts?

At 50 posts, you move up.  A newbie is exactly that, someone new to the forum.

If you're a member of the old version of the forum, you haven't been paying much attention to the news flashes above and the sticky post in this very section ;)  Otherwise, if you're truly new here, welcome, and don't worry about the term, just participate and enjoy yourself.

Mild Modifications / Re: 700R4 conversion in a '68

I believe a Turbo400 Crossmember would be right in the ballpark for a good fit on the 700.  Unless the gearing was a better fit, I'd skip the 200.

Doug said he'd get the old forums up as read only archive when he had time.

Doug,

I've been demoted to newbie...(I'm innocent I tell you...it wasn't me...I was framed).

Just posting here as you stated for the ranking system.

If it helps, I was demoted to "Newbie" even as the Forum Admin ;)

General Discussion / Re: Photo for home page
« on: October 22, 2005, 11:57:02 AM »
Doug,

I am now logged in. Missed the forum while it was down. Looks nice...good job. Not sure how the thread thing would work. If you think it would be better, let me know what I would need to do. I don't mind the emailing of them however. I save them to my computer in categories and get them ready for the upcoming the months. I usually need them downloaded to my computer because most of them need to be "cleaned up" as I have to crop them and shrink them for the thumbnail as well as adjust the clarity on some of them if need be. Let me know what you think is best.

As for everyone....Send them to me for now at sdkar@bellsouth.net. Don't forget to include your full name so you get credit. I have a ton of pics that have been sent to me that have no names attached. As I stated above...I can clean the pics up a little, but the quality of the pic depends greatly on what you send me. Thanks alot and keep 'em coming. :) sdkar@bellsouth.net

Steve

Glad to see you made it, Steve.

The thread thing is entirely up to you.  I like the idea as people get a chance to show off even if their car doesn't make it to the home page.

I am thinking about making a photo gallery available for members as well, for just that reason.

If a thread is made for the home page picture collection each month, I can "sticky" it so it sits at the top and is easily found.

I'm guessing that everyone missed something I just snuck in last night.

Look above the message area at the button menu and you'll see a new button "Old Forum"

The old forum is read-only, you can not post.  At this time it's still requiring you to log in using your old login info.  That will soon be changing.

I've got a decent new photo of my car. Who do I send it to for placement on the home page?

Send to Steve Karlecke at sdkar@bellsouth.net Not sure if Steve has rejoined the new forum yet.

Rich

As we progress, rather than e-mailing, Steve could start a thread for the new pics and folks could post them right within the thread.
