General Discussion / Factory Chambered Exhaust-69’ 396
« on: April 21, 2023, 02:30:53 PM »
I’m in a little dilemma right now, I need help on determining the size on the exhaust from the factory for 396 Camaro’s. Purchased a Chambered Stainless Steel set back in 2019’ from 1 of Vendors, to be stocked for install at conclusion of its restoration. Here I am, ready to install, and my installer just ask me if I was sure I wanted this 2”  behind my mildly built L78, factory spec’d! Is all Big Block system’s at least 2.25 inches or 2.50 inches, is I guess my question? Only have owned car for 51 years, and very slight memory of Day 2’d removal of complete exhaust, and slight memory of all the dimples in the system. May be also could be dreaming of long ago. Thanks in advance for the help.

Sorry Boomer632, did not mean to take away from your post, by adding pics of my car and engine. But thanks to MaroMan, David K, and Mo for I assume is responses to my post. To ya’ll just tried to replicate the factory look or what I eyeballed on a used car lot in So. Mississippi and purchased on my HS graduation evening, May 26, 1972. Yes next month, 51 years owned. Once this CE L78 is back in car, soon I hope, then I will began a re-search for my original engine that I put my eyes on back in the mid 90’s, but had a very unfimilar suffix code to me, of which if re-found will be looking for a partial VIN, to confirm or eliminate as my original! The suffix code I remember to this day, and since have discovered it is a very special rare code, will say 1 of 311. Of corse the code has already been discounted by Mr. Kurt a while back as never been a code in this series of 311, or at least confirmed as 1 of. Sorry I’ve been long on this, but maybe 1 day I can post my car and story and pic it also. God Bless.

Just had my CE L78 completely re-done, bored .60 over. My engine builder says I should be fine running 93 octane.

1969 - Orphans / Re: 1969 documentation list - updated 2/16/2023

Man o man there is a VIN on this revised list that is exactly 20 cars behind my VIN. But it is a 6-cyl if the beginning sequence 123379N is for a 6-cyl. Of course my VIN starts 124379N60XXXX, and is a 396 SS L78. So very close, hoping mine’s May make the list 1 day. I’ve only owned it for 50 years, but never in those years have I seen anywhere any paperwork or even any evidence of a Protect-O-Plate. Sorry Mr. Kurt, May sound like I’m whining, but still dreaming, anyway. God Bless.

BLee67, if it’s by chance 603, would it be for sale? But I’m like MO, I think it’s a 2 instead of zero. Thanks.

If it is 603 only 884 cars from mine, which starts 604, and my car is 02D built, 4th week of February. X66. Thanks.

General Discussion / Re: Tips on finding original owner and history?
« on: October 20, 2022, 02:20:21 PM »
I’ve owned my 9’ SS396 L78 for 50 years this past May. Do have a dealers packet in glove box, and have NCRS report which only confirmed my dealers packet as legit. Did use Lost Muscle Cars and found the original owner in early February this year. Original title holder of car is still alive and aged 96 years old. But the son who is the owner I talked with and all he could tell me was it was bought new and Day 2ued and went racing around ChicagoLand. No pics, but was able to remember what the purchase price was, and to me was a good bit high for a L78 factory car! Of course the original motor is not with car and have no paperwork or P-O-P with packet.

Very nice 9’ SS396, Kurt! Is it L78? Hope to post mine soon, 50 year owned, this May 26th, to be exact. Thanks for re-do on pics, now need to learn  how to put them on here. God Bless.
