Restoration / Guidance on dating of components
« on: May 08, 2008, 04:06:20 AM »
So it turns out I am missing two pieces that I thought I had, A 61 AMP Alternator and a distributor.  This is for an LA built '69 SS 350 AT w/AC with a trim tag date of 01D and an engine build date of T0117HB.

How far ahead of the car and the engine should these two components be?

Can I use the NCRS guideline of six months prior to build date for these?

KurtS, this would seem to be a good one for you. :)

Thanks

Restoration / Spiral Shocks
« on: April 04, 2008, 04:31:37 AM »
I put this in the decoding section but maybe it was the wrong choice...so here it is for those who visit this section:

This is supposed to be the PN for a front shock (spiral type) for '69 Camaro:

3192946.

It matches up to none of my references.   ANy clues?

thanks

Originality / molded hood pads
« on: February 13, 2008, 02:41:33 PM »
Were molded hood pads originally installed on Camaros?  Or was the original hood pad the soft style?

I guess more clearly...molded hood pads - correct or incorrect?

Thanks

On Van Nuys cars...when did they stop using the short rear spoiler and move to the longer one during '69 production?

Sparked by my question here on the missing Trim Tag on the '69 convertible I have (Here is a link to the discussion I started http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=2690.0).  I'd be interested in the reasons for your responses if you are willing to give them.

General Discussion / Missing Trim Tag
« on: September 12, 2007, 06:26:13 PM »
I have a '69 convertible VIN 124679N679379 that has a POP but is missing it's trim tag.  KurtS has seen this car at my house.  It would appear to be a red on red std car with white power top..this is all from the physical evidence.  I believe Kurt agreed with this assesment.  The body color and interior color are not called out on the POP.  I would like to replace the trim tag and would like comments on the best way to have it reproduced.  The POP reads as follows:
                           124679N679379   B
T0827DD               BA0828G             9
B0M11                   13

I decode as follows:
B = Bay City 2bbl
T0827DD = Aug. 27 307 w/TH350
BA0828G  = Aug 28 2.56:1 open
9 = September build
BOM11 = ?? August 11th
1= N40 power steering
3 = Radio

Based on the VIN I put the build date as 09A (on or around Wednesday September 3rd)

It has some but not all of the bright trim (1/4 louvres, front wheel well trim) ...is it X-44 or X-11?

the 307 is no longer with the car (it had a wasted December '68 date 307 instead), the TH350 and rear axle appear to be original.

thanks in advance

When the body moved down the line and the firewall needed to be pierced for things like wiring looms (on AC or ZL2 equipped cars - for example) or other things (like Muncie Speedo cables) was that done by robot or by a line worker?  Does the process change over the three years of 1st gen production?  If it was by hand, when did GM move to an automated system of achieving piercings in the body?   If automated, when did that process start? (and was it mark wide? - that is all car models in production)

General Discussion / Production Dating a vehicle by VIN
« on: June 20, 2007, 08:33:33 PM »
I have two Norwood built '69s.  I would like to figure out , as close as I can, what day of the week they would have been built.

The first is VIN N638606 and has 05A on the trim tag - it is a Z/28

The second is VIN N648737 and has 05C on the trim tag - it is a 307 coupe

I know from JohnZ's article that NOR was producing 912 cars per day.  I have read in Dobbins and Incremonia's Fact book that May VIN's start with 636000 and end with 654000 at Norwood.  I know that Firebirds were also built at NOR starting in April.  May 1st 1969 was a Thursday.

Heres what I don't know:
1) how many days per week did the NOR plant operate?
2) of the 912 cars produced per day what is the split between Firebirds and Camaros?
3) is any of my data or assumptions above incorrect?
4) can I jsut start at 636000 on May first adn add 912 per operational day unitl I get to my VIN?
