Maintenance / Timing
« on: March 06, 2023, 12:38:21 AM »
Hey you all,
What's the best way to re-plumb the vacuum advance canister to manifold vacuum from ported vacuum? I've got the distributor out and sent to Jerry for rework so it seems a good time to make the modification. Can I "Y" the pull off hose or do I need to find a fitting to take from the brake booster?

Thanks!
Hank

Maintenance / Primary Accel squirter nozzle
« on: December 04, 2022, 11:28:32 PM »

Greeting you all,

Can you provide me the part number squirter nozzle assy. part number for the 4053? I'm assuming what is installed is the stock .025 (although when I rebuilt the carb I could find no identifying marks) The engine now that it's getting colder outside has a hesitation just when the throttle is applied. The stumble is momentary, and the engine responds fine after. What I've read is to go up two sizes but there are so many different styles to choose from I'd like to be sure before placing the order.

Thanks, and Happy Holidays!

Hank

Originality / Hood Insulation Pad Interference
« on: October 22, 2022, 12:06:29 PM »
Hello All,

I've discovered the cowl induction rubber seal has a larger diameter than the cut-out in the insulation pad. Are there different cut-out sizes depending on application? I have no problem replacing the one currently installed, I just want to make sure I order the correct one.

Thanks and Best Regards,

Hank

Originality / Air Cleaner spacer?
« on: September 29, 2022, 12:15:19 AM »

Hi you all,
I'm confused... I went to replace the cowl induction seal and the lip to secure it was pointed the wrong direction. So I grabbed the AIM and figured out the Camaro Central guys had it inside out. I flipped it around and also noticed in the diagram there is a spacer between the air cleaner base and the flat flange where the seal is mounted. Is this spacer supposed to be on this car?

Thanks and best regards,

Hank

General Discussion / Timing
« on: June 05, 2022, 09:38:54 PM »

Hi you all, I'm trying to understand engine timing as related to the 1969 Z28. I realize the factory changed for that year and put the vacuum advance source to ported where there was no advance once the canaster was reconnected following timing adjustment. My history comes from once initial timing was adjusted the vacuum advance was reconnected giving you an instant bump in the timing setting. We messed with the initial adjustment a lot to find the correct amount for the engine configuration as related to performance.
So in 1969 they removed the vacuum source at idle apparently for emission purposes. I've read the articles indicating revamping the vacuum source to the distributor to basically reconfigure the system to prior years. Jump to real time today and I'm running approx. 10 degrees initial and once the vacuum is re-connected there is no real change in timing until the throttle is advanced. I don't have a total timing number but will say the car is impressive with no indications of laying over with higher rpm's. I guess the actual question here what does it matter where the timing comes from as long as the engine gets what it needs?

Thanks as always!

Maintenance / Coolant system Sealants
« on: January 20, 2022, 12:29:26 PM »
Hello to all!
Has anyone had experience using sealant tabs in cooling systems? The radiator in the Z is leaking and there is only one radiator shop here in town and their best guess to repair (if possible) is about the same as replacing with a new unit from Camaro Cantral. While it would be nice to have the original stay in the car I'm not sure I want to give the shop that kind of money for a maybe good radiator. I have heard of these different sealants with mostly positive reviews and would like to know what you all think.

best regards,

Hank

General Discussion / Under hood Insulation Blanket
« on: October 28, 2021, 12:09:08 AM »
Greetings all, I am curious as to the function of the insulation blanket on the underside of the hood. Cowl induction I get but why the blanket? I've always ran with the impression that heat is the engines enemy so why keep it under the hood?
Thanks,
Hank

General Discussion / Dwell Meters
« on: March 30, 2021, 01:04:51 AM »

So I'm curious here. I've never used a dwell meter, have always just gapped points in the middle of the range specified. If I were to decide to go by dwell and not gap is there a meter that is reliable and accurate these days? I've read where two meters on the same installation give up to a 5 degree difference. Is there a way to verify the accuracy of a meter? At least gapping you know you got what you set the points too.

Thanks!

Originality / Need to know
« on: March 04, 2021, 01:15:55 AM »

Hi everyone,
I'm curious if I should pursue reaching to some of the historical groups mentioned on the various sites regarding vehicle/dealer delivery information. I have the original POP plate and dealer info. Z was delivered and sold from Allen White Chevrolet in Ohio August 1969. Car was not highly optioned basically a standard interior Z28. If I send $50.00 to the National Corvette society will the report if available tell me anything more than what I know now?

Thanks as always,

Hank

Maintenance / Fuel Sending Unit
« on: December 14, 2020, 10:35:29 PM »

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping you all can point me in the right direction regarding the fuel sending unit in the 69Z. I jumped in to warm the engine today and the console fuel quantity gage pegged past full. I did fill the tank just before putting her in the garage last week so I thought the float may have just stuck so I rocked the rear of the car to no avail. Removed the gage cluster cover and tapped on the gage as well as manually moving the needle which moved freely back to empty. Turn the power on and the gage sweeps back to past full. I located the connector by the trunk lock cleaned the connector blades and reconnected which didn't help. I provided another ground to the harness side at which time the gage moved back to past empty. So now I'm researching new sender units and I see there are multiple models to choose from; different supply sizes of tubing some with return lines etc. Which one is correct for a 1969 Z28? I can't drop the tank here but I do have a garage I trust to do the work and they let me supply my own parts. I would like to have all parts in hand before scheduling them to perform the work.

Thank you!

Maintenance / Power Valves
« on: October 15, 2020, 11:42:46 PM »
Hi all,

I'm in process of rebuilding the Holley 4053 on the Camaro. I am to the point of installing new power valves. The ones removed are marked 6.5 and I wasn't having any running issues so am planning on installing the same rating however the renew kit came with four marked 6.5. Two have 2 slots and two have 4 slots. The ones removed have 2 holes each primary and secondary. I'm assuming the 4 slot valve supplies twice the fuel as the 2 slot valve and therefore should be installed on the secondary side, or is 2 slots good on both sides? The Z is a weekend warrior and isn't driven daily but does know where the straight line country roads are. I do need to satisfy my need for speed every now and again :-)

Thanks in advance for the help,

Hank

Maintenance / Alternate Valve Lash Adjustment Procedure
« on: August 09, 2020, 12:04:46 AM »

Hello everyone,

New to this forum. i recently acquired a 1969 Z28 Camaro 100% stock. I've read the procedure posted by John Hinckley and Duke Williams and am just curious. Has anyone actually adjusted to .026"? Mine aren't making noise but I have the need to bring everything up to date, You all know...oil change everywhere front to back and give her some TLC.

Thanks for any incite you all can provide!

Henry
