Garage Talk / Re: Pomona Swap Meet

I've been to the Long Beach swap meet a few times as I worked close to the event, but didn't find a lot of stuff of interest for sale.

I only went to the Pomona swap meet once years ago as a friend was looking for a water pump pulley for his 1968 Z28.  We didn't find the pulley, but I remember seeing some sellers who had a pile of rusty stuff!

I have a friend who owns a 1969 Z28 and when he takes it to our local Cars & Coffee show, he displays the original dealer's invoice and other documentation as he got tired of being asked if it was an real Z28 or not.  I must say that even in Southern California, it is rare to see a first generation Z28 or any Camaro.

The machine which punched out VIN plates was located near one of the doors to the computer center as someone would pick them up and take them out to the assembly plant.  You needed a magnetic card to get into the room as we also printed the checks for hourly employees and all disbursement checks and there was a phone on the wall to call to contact us.  Unused VIN plates were stored in a walk-in vault in a locked cabinet.  I remember the machine that stamped the VIN numbers was quite small and made a lot of noise, but we never had a problem with it.

There were data entry clerks at Van Nuys in the mid-1980s and they verified every input.  We were even still using IBM punch cards for some applications and when our sorter needed to be repaired, our IBM customer engineer had to go to their historical records to find the maintenance manual!

At the Van Nuys Plant, the machine which stamped the VIN plates was located in the computer center and the information came from the Vehicle Order Master (VOM).  The only time we would manually stamp a VIN tag was when one was damaged in the assembly plan and we would need the original tag as they would have to be sent to Central Office as we had to account for every tag.  I even stamped a few replacement VIN tags for some 3rd generation F-cars.

Research Topics & Reports / Re: Original ignition coils
« on: December 24, 2021, 09:12:59 PM »
I believe that my friend's 1968 Z28 had its original distributor and after he rebuilt the engine for racing, I remember him power-shifting the motor into second gear and the Sun tach was reading 8700 rpm as I pulled my legs onto the passenger seat as the car didn't have a scatter shield.  I've asked previously about the performance of the 1968 Z28 transistorized distributor, but have never gotten a reply.

According to this article, the ignition coil used on the 1968 Z28 with the transistorized ignition was different:

I believe codes were stamped on most parts, even if they were not for production as if there was a problem with the sheet metal, they would be able to trace the source:

When I worked at Van Nuys, quality started to mark parts that were sent back to Fisher Body as the rejected items began to appear at Norwood.  Perhaps Fisher Body sent these rejects to the parts division.

General Discussion / Re: Selling your car

Kelley - I would list your car for sale in Hemmings as you have indicated that you don't want to go through the bidding process.  I've been a Hemmings subscriber since 1990.  My brother sold a car on BAT a few years ago and did get a good price, but it seems to me today that there are a lot more comments being posted on BAT which in my opinion are sometimes not accurate or have nothing to do with the sale of the vehicle.  Good luck! - Mark

Car was for sale in Sept. 2016 and the seller said that the 1968 Z28 has 19K actual miles:
