Decoding/Numbers / Just looking for an opinion
« on: September 15, 2021, 03:07:46 AM »
A year or so ago I started a discussion on Team Camaro Tech about my block stamped numbers. It was quite a discussion with people going both ways on original factory error or fake restamp. Well. since then I've pulled and rebuilt motor. While engine was out I cleaned area with some muriatic acid. All the sanding marks were there prior to my cleaning. And I took some better pictures. After going over picture of vin and id stamp I observed something interesting. If you enlarge photo, looking at area just after stamped A there seems to be a very faint A. Looking under stamped A it seems that the A was stamped over an H. At the beginning There s a faint V which I was told was a bounce when stamped. Can any one see what I see? If the bounced V is lined up with the A over H and very faint A at the end. Could it be possible that when stamp was bounced left the faint marks then when done over most of current numbers and letters covered most of faint letters, numbers. A was then stamped again to cover bounced H? Not sure if this is making any cense but if it does what's your opinion? All the numbers on block do match protecto plate which I used to find and talk to original owner who purchased car in 1969.

If all my numbers are right but go backwards on the 9N569987 to 9N561885 is approxamately 2 weeks. So then about end 2nd or begining 3rd week December? That then puts it right on cowl production date of 12B. Then if my calculations of 18  69 which is 41/2 weeks comes out to Aug, Sept, Oct, Nov, 1/2 Dec  would fall roughly into my 12B build date. Don't know if I did my calculations right but looks like begining of 3rd week on vin? Now that I'm starting to slightly figure it out with everyones help it starts to make cense. Thanks all for excercising my brain.  ;D

OK, back again. Trying again to see if I've figured it out yet.
12B = 2nd week December
Vin date chart on CRG is 9N551862 = November and 9N569987 = December
If those Vins are begining numbers for November and December than my Vin falls into roughly 3rd week November
My Vin 9N561885
Tank date is 18  69 which = 41/2 months from what I believe production model starting about August 1968
Then if my calculations are correct Aug, Sept, Oct, Nov, 1/2 Dec  would fall roughly into my 12B build date
Looks good to me! Am I getting close to having this figured out? Thanks guys for trying to push me in right direction. Still a little slow but hope I've figured it out.

Thanks Kurt for the reply. I saw those numbers and figured my tank was right in that area. What I'm not understanding is how the tank is dated and how it applies to the production date. I've looked around find nothing that is making cense to me. The 18 69 tank date would have to have traveled back in time to be installed in 2nd week of December 1968. I know thats not correct. Close as I can find in description was that it would be 18th week of production year 1969. If guessing right I found reference of middle Aug, Sept as start of production so 18 weeks is 41/2 months which puts it in December if I go with middle August as 1969 production start. Then it would make cense. Any chance thats correct? Rookie on some of these things.

Question. if build date on cowl is 12B which is 2nd week December (Late 1968)and tank date is 18 69 which now I think stands for 18th week of model yr 1969.
Car was purchased new Jan 23, 1969. How can tank possibly be an orignal? I see on data on tanks real close to mine on dates. Am I messed up on reading my numbers or has tank been changed?
