Jon,
I hope we get the chance to meet up some day and talk cars/racing.
Btw, I got two of my Camaro buddies to sign up on this site!

Jon,
I was there in '90-'92. In 1990 and '92 I was filming for a video. Maybe we have met at the event? I raced my car in 1991.

No, I'm down by Santa Barbara so have not been to Thunderhill.

Jon,
I see your a So-Cal guy, was wondering if you ever raced/attended the Palm Springs Vintage Races when they did them?

I hope this is appropriate here, there are a few shots with Camaros and Mustangs.

For Christmas 1967, a skinny seventeen year old got a Kodak Super 8 movie camera. This budding race car enthusiast performed his initial practice with the device at the 1968 Sports Car Club of America Polar Prix, held at Green Valley Raceway, in Smithfield, Texas.

If you ignore the first half to two-thirds of video 1 (we had an ice storm that year, and the kid and some of his friends had a Snow Day from school), you should see some interesting video; including pictures of at least one real Corvette Grand Sport (and maybe another faux version); some vintage road racing coverage, and pictures of a TV star getting his SCCA National License.

Go through the Videos in order, 1 through 4, as that takes you in sequence from practice and qualifying on Saturday into the racing on Sunday.

Remembering that it was been almost 50 years since this film was taken, some of my recollections might be a little cloudy, but feel free to ask questions once you have had a chance to enjoy them.

And please forgive the quality (and that it was the cheapest Super 8 camera Kodak made), thankfully I did not pursue a career in cinematography.

Enjoy!

Thanks for posting! Your picture quality is not bad at all. That said, IF you want it to be 'broadcast quality' you can have it color corrected while its being transferred to an HD master….btw, that won't be cheap!

Hopefully they will add some east coast events.

Look into your local regional 'Open Track' club events. Might not be as exciting and overwhelming as Laguna Seca or Sonoma, but just as fun!

There is a guy on one of the Mustang sites who wants $50 bucks for the paper that came wrapped in a fender!

Some call it stretching the rules...   racers call it 'creative interpretation of the rules'...  :)

The late great Smokey Yunick said "You ain't cheating until your caught…and everyone in racing cheats!"
He WAS the man who invented the 'creative interpretation of the rules'

Jon,
Yes AMC did use them also…Btw, the Dominators were approved by SCCA, since they were homologated parts from Fords FIA records. That said, do you think Ford 'stretched' the rules by using IR Dominator Holley's to try and create a 'cheap' Weber type of induction?

Ford was always trying to stretch the rules to their advantage. They spent a lot of corporate money and expected wins.  All the manufacturers wanted to win but I think Ford was the most aggressive, i.e. the 15x9 wheels with offset that made them look like a 15x8, the Tunnel Port 302 that was never a production engine, the special front suspension components for '68, etc.

Jon,
Absolutely correct. Remember the Cross-Boss intake and Autolite Inline carb? SCCA banned that one for the '70 season…for the same reason..'stretching the rules'.

Thanks, Jon for setting up the 1st Gen Camaro T/A forum. As another Ford guy who joined this site, I love anything to do with our beloved Trans-Am cars, Chevy, Ford, Pontiac, Mopar and AMC stuff!

Boys,
As you know during the '69 T/A season, Chevy used the Cross-Ram 8V set up and Ford used their IR dual Dominator carbs…Question is do you think Ford 'violated the rules'? OR took advance of the rules?

General Discussion / Re: rebuilt engin startup
« on: November 27, 2018, 02:23:12 PM »
Hi all, Planning to fire up my fresh rebuilt 302 in a few days(have other things to do first) and I would like some feedback on how long to let it run, what rpm etc. I will prime the oil pump first, pan filled with royal purple 5w30, topped off with amsoil assembly lube. Set the valves @ 24 cold, it's has the comp cam 30/30 grind. heard both settings 24 & 30 lash? Using super hi test gas. Engine put together with original 68 crank, pink rods, J&E pistons new valves & sprins basically upgrading the 302. block bored to 40 over was 30 over before. I'll try and answer any questions.

Thanks Pete

Id recommend you use conventional oil (at least 30W), and some zinc additive especially with a flat tappet (non-roller) cam. Prime it before you fire it up is preferred. Run it with water only, and for at least 20 minutes @ 2,200 RPMs.

Trans-Am Camaros / Re: Unusual valve covers and intake ??
« on: November 26, 2018, 06:02:31 PM »
Intake sure looks like a Smokey-Ram, minus the logos. The valve covers remind me of the Ford 'finned' covers from an FE or a Boss 302.
