Decoding/Numbers / 1969 03d clarification needed
« on: January 15, 2024, 02:10:29 AM »
I'm curious as to what would be believed to be the correct VIN sequence for a 1969 03D car.  Looking at the 1969 calendar, March had 6 weeks with the 1st week starting on a Saturday.  Would that be represented as O3A or would 03A be the week that started on 3/3/69.  I'm trying to buy an 03D pace car right now and it's VIN sequence looks to be in the roughly last 350 cars produced in March.  It's a Norwood car.  All of the stamps and component dates jive and look to be original but I would think there would be more cars produced in the remaining week or weeks.  Would there be 6 weeks as in A,B,C,D,E,F for March? or ?  This is the only thing I've questioned, everything else falls right into line with original casting and stamp dates.

General Discussion / Looking for opinions on a survivor car
« on: August 20, 2022, 02:34:52 AM »
Although 67 & 68 Camaros are my main passion, I just recently bought a low mileage and always a garaged, special occasion only 1966 Marlin that is the most assembly line correct & original car I think I have ever seen.  My delima is, the owner in the early 80's tried to brighten up the engine a little bit and spray painted the engine.  Originally the engine is a shade of red that has a little orange in it, and he used what looks to be a chevy orange to re-paint it.  The original decals are still on the on the engine, but you can see light over spray on it.  Even though the car shows extremely well, if I re-paint the engine and change the decal it will be nicer than original.  If I leave it, it is also still not assembly line correct, but it would at least look more vintage and will show a little oil seepage.  The engine currently has the worst finish/appearance by far of any area on the car, every other finish under the hood is very nice and totally original down to belts, hoses and ignition components.  One more tidbit, I had to rebuild the original water pump, it will have to be painted as it was boiled.   I'm curious as to what others' opinions would be as to how it would score higher if it was to be judged.  Is it better to look old and incorrect or look fresh and correct?  I wanted to ask this in a non-AMC forum to get a different perspective.

My 12D 1968 Z28 was ordered new there, they are claiming to be the 2nd largest corvette dealer in the world.  I'm guessing they have been into performance cars since there founding being they had such an early Z28 on the lot but have not been able to find any information on the history of the dealership that verifies this.   The original dealer principals have since passed away and I've reached out to the current generation that operates the store but thought if anything was known it would probably known here.

General Discussion / A happy day!!!

After many years of trying I just located the 2nd owner of my 68Z28, he bought it in 1969.  I'm in conversation with his son and the mother currently and waiting on the father to chime in.  They are divorced but I shared pictures with the mother and she has confirmed it was theirs and vividly remembers driving around pregnant with the son in the car.  We believe there are numerous pictures and stories to come.   Sometime you get lucky if you keep trying!!!!!    More to come

Decoding/Numbers / 1967 SS350
« on: January 09, 2018, 11:31:39 PM »
I have a lead on another interesting car I might try to acquire and wanted to be sure before I go and check it out.  The car has never been restored but the original engine is not in the car, what appears to be the original engine is included but in pieces.  My question is... Would an "MS" 350 have a small journal crank as other 67 and back are or would it be a large journal?  If it is a large journal would it be a 4 bolt main or would that not have happened until the 1969 model year?  If it is small journal obviously ( I think ) it would be a 2 bolt main block. I'm pretty sure the car is legit but I would like to have any info I can to cross check data.   I don't think it matters but the car has a 01D build date from Norwood

Decoding/Numbers / What is the earliest known 68 Z28?
« on: January 07, 2018, 08:15:59 PM »
Hello All
I aware early 68 Z's are pretty scarce but I have never seen any numbers or registry of sort showing the earliest VIN for a 68.  Does something like exist?  I've had a 4th week of December car since the early 80's that has been sitting since 1976.   I would call it a wounded survivor but I do have the original block and most all of the engine along with the rear end.  It does have the original Fathom Blue paint, 719 interior with a fold down rear seat.  My goal for this year is to finally begin putting it back together.
