Originality / Re: Correct tires for a 1968 Camaro RS / SS 350
« on: June 23, 2017, 11:59:30 AM »
Hi Abiddle

Thanks so much for the post. I was not aware that Firestone had brought out a Wide Oval Redline Radial however I think these will be the best ones for my car as it came with Firestone Wide Oval Redline tires from the factory. I presume the FR70 X 14 are the correct replacements?

Thanks also for sending through the article. The video was great. They just don't make car adverts like that anymore!

Thanks again, Nigel

Originality / Correct tires for a 1968 Camaro RS / SS 350
« on: June 22, 2017, 02:07:34 PM »
I wish to install the correct tires on the original steel wheels on my 1968 Camaro RS / SS 350 which I understand are F70 x 14 Firestone Wide Oval Redline tires, however I have been told that the old style bias ply type constructed tire will track quite badly when driving along and not handle very well if I intend using the car for any reasonable length journey. Instead I have been told to install BF Goodrich Silvertown Redline radial tires.

Please can you confirm if this information is correct?

I am also trying to find out the correct width tire which came on the car and if all tires were the same width or if the rear tires were wider.

I would be grateful for your help so I can ensure I buy the correct tires.

Many thanks, Nigel

Thanks for all your help. I have managed to find a correct date coded Quadrajet from Custom Rebuilt Carbs. Philip was very helpful. The Carb has been completely refurbished and is in show condition. Kind regards Nigel

Can anyone recommend where I may be able to find a Rochester 4MV Quadrajet carburettor (7028212 DH / 1188) for my 1968 Camaro SS RS 350ci manual. I live in the UK and am struggling to find one. Many thanks, Nigel

Hi Kolektor, are the 3919803 manifolds for sale? and if so are they in good condition or do they require repair. I am looking for a 3919803 manifold for my 68 Camaro ss 350. I am also looking for the two intake manifolds. Thanks Nigel

Hi Russ, Please can you confirm  those casting numbers are correct for a 1968 350ci manual car. I have found the following advert for manifolds however they give the casting numbers as 3892679 and 3840912.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1967-1968-Camaro-Exhaust-manifolds-SB-327-350-without-smog-/331537735129?hash=item4d31305dd9:g:~UAAAOSwstxVOVgt

I just want to make sure I am buying the correct manifolds,

Russ, many thanks for all the information, and the casting numbers for the exhaust manifolds, just what I needed. Kind regards Nigel

Paul, thanks for the photo, is it just called an L48 air cleaner or is their a specific part number?

I have just purchased my first Camaro, a 1968 Camaro RS / SS, dash vin is 124378N443468. The previous owner had added various after market engine parts and I wish to return the engine to original factory spec.

The engine now has headers however I want to replace them with the original manifold which I believe is casting number 3919803. I have found a couple on Ebay however one has the oil fill tube and one does not. Is the oil fill tube original factory spec?

Please can you also confirm if the correct air cleaner for the car is an L48 single snorkel air cleaner?

Many thanks in advance, Nigel

Dear Ed & Paul, thank you both so much for all your help. It is great to know that the car is a true matching numbers 1968 SS 350. Once I have been to see the car next week I will with matching numbers do some research to see if it is also a true RS car. Thanks again and have a good weekend.

Hi Ed, Many thanks for the reply. Amazing that you found those pictures of the car as it is now in the UK after being imported last year by a garage who is currently selling it. http://www.classicamericancarsales.co.uk/vehicle/1968-camaro-rsss-clone/

I have attached photos of the dash tag, engine block codes and transmission code for you. I have also checked the data tag against the one in the link you sent and they match.

From the link you sent, it would appear that Wings & Wheels were selling the car as a genuine RS / SS however if you can let me know your thoughts I would be very  grateful. I have only seen photos of the car so far as the engine has just been rebuilt however once it is back in the car I will have a look at it. Many thanks Nigel

Decoding/Numbers / help please decoding a 1968 Camaro
« on: March 24, 2017, 03:31:43 PM »
Hi, I am looking to purchase a 1968 Camaro however the owner is stating that it is a RS / SS Clone. I have had a look at your site and decoded the car using the details the owner has sent and it would appear to be a L48 350ci 295hp engine matching to a Muncie 4 speed transmission.

Were all 1968 Camaro with a L48 engine SS cars?

The owner has no history of the car so not sure if it is a RS or a RS / SS. I can send photos if it would help. This is my first Camaro purchase and I don't want to get it wrong. Any help gratefully received.

The data tag is
ST 05E
TR 68   12437 NOR 142764 BODY
      721            Z2                    PAINT

The dash vin is 124378N443468

The transmission code is 18N443468 P8E16

The engine code is 18N443468 V0521MS

Many thanks, Nigel
