Maintenance / Trans - Update

Hi everyone! Thanks to all who responded to my previous post about my transmission. A local trans shop replaced the torque converter and yoke. The cost was just over $2,000, and if this fixes the leaks, I'll be very happy. I contacted Jegs, but in order for them to consider any type of reimbursement, I would have had to return the trans. They said because I didn't have a pre-authorization for the work to be done, there wasn't much they could do. Oh well. Live and learn.

My next step is to have the oil changed. I'm about 1,000 miles on the new motor. While it's in the shop, I'm going to have them look at the breaks and steering. My break pedal sometimes doesn't return all the way up, so the break lights stay on if I don't life the pedal up. Hopefully that's a minor thing. The steering feels a bit stiff. And I hear the belt squeaking at times. So hopefully that's not a big issue either.

Once I get these quirks fixed, I'll be super happy! Of course, now it's getting chilly around here, so not sure how much topless driving I'll be doing.

Apparently my new transmission had a bad torque converter. Also it was missing the bracket for the kick down cable, and some of the seals were bad. So, the trans shop replaced the torque converter, ordered the bracket, and sealed the leaks. I have to return my car once the bracket comes in, but in the meantime, I picked up my car yesterday (Tuesday), and as of today (Wednesday), I do not see any trans fluid on the garage floor.  It raining today, so I probably won't get out to drive much, but I can tell by the fuel gage that the shop did drive her around. I'm hoping this is the end of the issue! The kick down cable should be in by the end of this week and they said I can stop in for the installation.  I don't have a bill yet, so I don't know the final cost. But, they're a reputable shop, so I'm not concerned with the cost. I'll check back with the final bill once I have it.  Plus, I will contact Jegs just to see if they're willing to warranty any of the work. Most likely not, but it can't hurt to ask.  Stay tuned!

Hoping to get my car back today. The transmission shop pulled the trans, and replaced the torque converter. He said that was the main problem. He also replaced all of the seals. Hopefully this is the end of the leaks! And I’m really hoping to get her back today. She’s on the lift now, and they’re installing the trans. I’ll follow up once I get her back!! 💃💃💃

Thanks for the info. I took my car to a transmission shop this morning. Hopefully they'll have some info for me today. I'll update my post as soon as I hear back. Thanks again!

Thank you so much for replying. I just took a picture underneath my car, and there's a pretty big spot on the ground about mid-car, approximate center of the car, about at the door but in the middle of the car.
Also, there is a little spot up front, just to the left of the passenger's front tire. This seems to be where the dipstick is located in the engine compartment, I think.

Hi folks, I sure hope someone can help me! I have a '68 Camaro with a brand new 350 crate motor & TH350 trans. I purchased both as a package from Jegs. My brother in law installed the motor & trans in July 2020. After each drive, I notice within a couple of hours, there's trans fluid under my car. My brother in law hasn't been able to find the leak so I contacted a local muscle car shop to see if they could go over it. I've schedule several appointments with them, and each time, they cancel or reschedule. So unfortunately, they have not been able to get me in. Lately, the leak seems to be worse than it was previously. Anyone have any ideas of where I should look to find what's leaking. It's definitely trans fluid.  Thank you in advance for any assistance or guidance you can give me.  ~ Andi

Wow, that would be an easy way to tell, but when I bought the car, the previous owner switched it from a column shift to a racer type floor shifter. So much of the car was changed, and hacked, so I don't know what was originally in it. I wish the VIN or trim tag told more of the history. I just want to know for my own use.

I do know that it was originally a V8, but other than that, I don't know much else. She's my beauty though and I love her. She's getting a new exhaust system now, and once that's complete, she should be ready to go!

I miss her and can't wait till Spring so I can drive her!!

It was originally a column shift automatic. I've replaced the column shifter with a Hurst shifter and console setup.

I'm not sure how many gears because the original transmission was replaced.

I'm pretty much done with the restoration process. New bucket seats this Spring should complete it. (For now) I guess it will never really be done. LOL

Thank you. I've been using "process of elimination" to try to figure out what it may have been originally. The link you posted has been very helpful, but I think I got all of the info I'm going to get. Still some unknowns.

Thanks. Sorry for my confusing post. I already figured out that interior colors was black and the convertible top was black based on the trim tag. I was trying to determine if it was an original SS based on the VIN & trim tag. That's all I have to go by at this point. I'm sure Chevy had specific combinations that were SS only but I'm having a hard time figuring it out.

Hi Group,
I'm trying to find out as much information as possible on my car. It's a 1968 convertible and based on the VIN & trim tag, I know the original exterior color was Ash Gold. It has a black convertible top and black bucket seats. It was a column shifter. The original motor, trans, & rear are long gone so I'm not able to determine anything from them.

Any ideas on where I can look for information? Or pictures? I can't seem to find any pictures with the color combinations/convertible top in a 68.

I'd love to hear from someone who can point me in the right direction.

Thanks for responding. Yes, the breaks were drum all the way around, and now disc only up front. A proportioning valve was installed with the conversion kit. In fact, it had to be replaced after installation because it was leaking. So, the valve is good now and not leaking.

I'll ask him about the bench bleed. I don't know what that means, but I'm sure he will.
