Yes, spares were not fitted for the race.  The story I heard was, the spares were included in the post race weigh in.  Again, this is just a vague memory............or imagined conversation.

From my time crewing on A-Sedan / GT1 beasties, I seem to  remember something about 1967 T/A cars being weighed with a  spare tyre.  The story was, Penske's were filled with water.  Anyone confirm that?

Thanks Jon.  Here's another one for you.  We know where one of the cars went, any idea what happened to the third chassis?

Cheers!

Re: And another addition from Mike Meek:

"If you look at the last shot of Neil's Camaro, you can see the back of my Corvette in the background.  If I could restore that car today I think I would leave the rainbow off.  I had a lot of fun racing with Neil back then."

What's Mike up to these days?  I met Mike when I started crewing for John Treder & haven't seen him since we really got out of racing.............back when Jeff James offed his ex--Oji /ex-IROC Camaro to Mark Ruden!!

Regarding chassis 5, 6, & 7 that were shipped to Alan Green Chevrolet.  Any idea which one became their TA entry?

Steve, thanks for posting that list. I just hadn't gotten around to it.

I was sorting my F/5000 data & found it buried there.  It seemed like an appropriate time to post it & start a new set of files.

The roll hoop in the Camaro looked as it was taken out of the "How to build a Trans-Am Mustang book".  Two sets of rear diagonals, one in typical placement from the upper 'corners' to the rear of the chassis.  The other set from about midway up the main hoop, down to the rear subframe kick-up.  Rumored to be a weak spot on a Mustang, realy not needed in a Camaro.  It was, also, the largest diametre main hoop ever seen! I had the Green Beast from about 1982 until Ron bought it.  I was partially incorrect, Traver bought the car with some/most of the main cage in it.  He just finished it.

A few of my ever colour changing archives:

1) Sears Point Enduro Regional, November '76 or '77 (I need to look that up).  Bill Maier/Mustang, John Treder/Camaro, Mike Nagle/Camaro smoking from caving in the LR fender with the T11 tyre wall.  Nagle had issue with brain fade.  Maier went on to break.  We won.
2) T9 at Laguna.  Lew Larimer passing Don Rettig / Camaro.  Originally built by Paul Traver, sold to Rettig, through my hands, to Ron Tredway.  Current whereabouts unknown.

Cheers,
Steve

John.....Sometime in the very early '70s, John Treder had the 12 bolt fitted to his A/S.  A local shop used their "drag race bits" for the conversion.  Aside from a pain to swap crown wheel & pinion, it performed flawlessly.  Until we went from 5, to 6 litre engines (A Sedan to GT1).  At the first National at Sears Point that year, the left rear was overtaxed by the hp/torque (586/525).  The inner bearing race "became" part of the axle snout.  A quick call to the original fabricator, & he said, "Bring it down."  After one look at it, he stated, "You're still running that setup, I thought I contacted everyone & got them to upgrade to my stock car hubs & snouts!?!!?"   I still remember the smell of burned 140 wt. Valvoline!

In my beginnings of peddling race spares, we sold, literally, tons of Bownam hardware.  The hardware was strong.  The joke & truth was that if a formula car had a heavy shunt, the bolts would still be usable.  As some of the log suspension bolts were between $25-$30 each, I have little doubt that they were reused!

Mike, If you went to a local College, the rep was probably a guy named Don.

Cheers,
Steve

If I can effect repairs on the aging Range Rover, we plan on being there Saturday.

Trans-Am Camaros / Re: Cross Ram Hood - Fiberglass -
« on: May 19, 2011, 08:02:29 PM »
Jon,

When I crewed for JT, we purchased one of the factory steel cowl hoods, & it was fairly light.  To the point that we never bolted it on, it was lift off.  Later when I had the Traver/Rettig A Sedan, it had an aftermarket fiberglass cowl induction hood.  I was surprised that, to me, there seemed to be very little difference in the weight feel.

Another to agree.  The angle of the pillar tubes reminds me of something used in open A & B production Corvettes.  The main hoop looks to be "leaning forward".  Overall, a bit spooky.
