Maintenance / Re: 396 engine rear main seal replacement
« on: August 13, 2018, 09:25:59 AM »
Hi,

Yes, that silicon sure can get in and about the engine if over used. I believe the Felpro #2918 calls for a slight dab of silicon.

The Felpro #2918 seems to be the best suited rear main seal for my 396. 1 peice sump gasket also.

Has anyone had any issues using the above seal?

Thanks for your input.

Hi,

What is the best seal to use for the rear main seal?

1 peice sump gasket?

Talking to a couple of mechanics who say rope always leaks slightly?

I guess follow instructions with installation with clocking or RTV.

Thank you.

Good morning,

Thank you to all you fellas who replied.

Some really good experience there and I shall follow the suggestions.

Winter here so might wait for it to warm up a little.

Oil leaks are annoying and don't really want it to cause issues with my clutch etc.

Once again thank you for the advice.

Mild Modifications / Headers for a 68 bb
« on: August 09, 2017, 09:27:29 PM »
Hi,

I have a 68 396, factory ac, factory exhaust set up Camaro of which I'm thinking of installing some headers.
I have spoken with Holley and they have short headers that would suit my set up this includes a bracket for the ac and overcome the factory plug angle.

Anyone used this set up or perhaps another brand?

Thank you.

Hi,

Thank you z28z11 and other members.

Found a very small intermittent small leak on the new rubber seal which holds the check valve. Replaced and bench tested. This was done at the rebuilders workshop. Installed and started softish pedal on start up. A long cruise and the brakes performed really well. A little firm but perhaps some final adjustments may improve that. Enjoyed the learning curve.

Cheers.

Hi,

I replaced the hose fFrom the manifold to check valve still hard brake pedal at idle. 18"inhg at idle.i removed the master cyclinder and started the engine. The booster piston moved freely once brake pedal was pressed.

I manually moved the booster piston out once the car was running and it returned to normal position in the booster once I released it.

I noticed the metering valve/hold off valve at the rear of the body has a silver plug type shape. Does that require resetting in the out position?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

General Discussion / Original 396 engine
« on: June 19, 2011, 09:13:59 PM »
Hi there,

I  decided to come to america and try and locate the original engine to my 68 camaro. Im only here for a coupe of weeks so any suggestions would be appreciated. I have searched the 68 orphans section.

Its a needle in a hay stack.excercise but I have to try.

The background. The engine was sold to a fella in the fort worth/mid cities texas area mid 75. I have no contact details of who the engine was sold to and the original owner of my.68 has no information to offer up.

VIN 8N408678

Thank you

Edit;  I took the assembly date out of your post.  Your just asking for a scammer to stamp you an engine with the correct info by posting all the info.  If someone has it make them provide the assembly dates and codes to prove it.  Don't post all the info, just the VIN.
