General Discussion / Fake '68 Z28 Convertible article in Hemming's Muscle Machines

There's a beautiful '68 RS/Z28 convertible on the cover of the August issue of Muscle Machines.  Just got it today, and read it.  The builder fully discloses that it's a counterfeit convertible; in fact, he built it to highlight the fact that fakes are out there and are getting harder to tell.   It's a beautiful car, Marina Blue, deluxe interior, RS, with lots of options.  He had some documentation made to match what he is presenting.   Since there is only 1 known '68 convertible Z28 to have been built, it makes it obvious that it's not real.  He sure went to a lot of trouble to do it!

Take a look at this.  Tell me if you see anything "wrong" with it.

Not too shabby!  I took a "quick" look at the photos and found these minor items...

- Rally wheels are the wrong size.
- Brake booster is not original; shouldn't have "Delco Moraine" on it.
- "GM" decals on end of the doors shouldn't be there.
- Engine pad shouldn't be painted.
- Los Angeles cars never had the "P", "T", and "B" stamps on the fire wall.

What to the PTB letters mean?  I've seen them on other cars at car shows.   Here's another clean looking car that caught my eye, although it has more obvious non-original things, like the hood inserts (it's a 327)...nice paint, though!

We had our 22nd annual car show today.  I'd like to thank the inept weather forecasters for scaring away 1/2 to 2/3 of the normal expected crowd...They harped Thursday night on tv, about severe weather, damaging winds, blah blah blah.   Saturday was nice,  it rained a little last night, and today was sunny and hot, with rain only appearing after 5pm.

That can be a detriment to your show, depending on how much work you have into it, and things like vendors who show up, but no customers.   No real good answer, other than to remind people to ignore the weatherman, and look at the radar on the internet before you leave.

50/50 is good and we sell varying lengths of tickets:  arms length $5,  car length $20,  all the way around the biggest car, $40.   That's a big seller there, because some people go in together on it.

People's choice awards are good, because it's not 5 or 6 judges; it's dozens of peers.

The TH350 wasn't available in 68 (though some test fleet cars were sold).

The floor shifter without console is a rare beast. Only available in 68 and only with a 396 car, it looked similar to a Mustang shifter.

A booklet I have shows the 396/325hp (rpo L35), with availability of theTH350.   Was that something that never made it into production?  Thanks

I read in a '68 Camaro sales brochure, that  the shifter is "steering column mounted, unless floor-mount is specified, with or without console".   

My question is, if you opted for the TH350 trans, floor mounted, but no console,  what did it look like?  Was it a stirrup shifter like the console has, or what?  I've never seen one, that didn't have the console.   I have seen 4-speeds, sans the console, but not an automatic.  Just curious.  Thanks.

I just got back from 3 days in Ocean City, MD.  Their 18th annual Cruisin' event lasted 5 days (ends today).  Off and on rainy, but Saturday was fantastic weather.  3500 cars registered, with tons of Camaros.  Mostly 69's, but quite a few '67's and some '68's.  I will definitelty be going back.  I posted some photos of Camaros on my website (which is still under construction).  Check 'em out.  If you were there with your Camaro, I probably have a picture of it.

What compression ratio are you thinking of on this?   I have a 350/350 hp Vette, and it was stock 11:1.  I have since bored it .030 over, making it higher than that.   I have to add lead to get it to not ping.   Just something to consider.
