Restoration / Re: 1967 Door MIRRORS; help please?
« on: December 16, 2020, 07:33:24 PM »
Seems unlikely to me that a June 1966 manufactured mirror would be without the bowtie.  All 66 Chevelle mirrors (which is the same mirror except with the bowtie) had the bowtie, and those cars were being produced through the end of July, while Camaros were not to come out until late August.

Remember that the 67 style non-bowtie mirror was still made by the OEM mfr. well into the 90's.  The Chevy Luv trucks of the mid 70's also used them with the same bracket and gasket.  Your 6-DMI-6 mirror is most likely a June 1976 manufactured mirror that was installed as a replacement some time after that date.  Donnelly Mirror Inc. (DMI) was still marking them with the same m-DMI-y format at that time.

They changed their name to Donnelly Corporation of America in 1984, and at some point after that they changed the mirror marking to m-DCA-y.  Then later it changed to m-DCA(R)-y (with the (R) being the trademark emblem).  Somewhere I have a list that pins down the change dates pretty good, but I cannot find it now!

Originality / Re: 67 non-disc master cylinder bail change date?

A friend just told me that his survivor 03D 67 Chevelle has the dog-legged bail, which narrows it down to somewhere between 12A and 03D.

Originality / 67 non-disc master cylinder bail change date?
« on: August 20, 2020, 10:41:48 PM »
Has anyone ever determined when the bail on a 1967 non-disc master cylinder changed from the one that is straight on the front and rear (the vertical parts) to the one that has a dog-leg on each end?  I know why it probably was changed (the bend allows the bail to "flex" more and makes it easier to get on and off the lid), but I don't know exactly when it changed.  I know my 12A 67 Chevelle had the straight bail, and my 05C 67 Chevelle has the dog-legged bail, but don't know where in between it changed.

Thanks!  Jeff

That's neat.  Was XX a broadcast code in 69?

In 66-67 Chevelles I think XS was M20, and XT was M21, but not positive about that.  I know XS was definitely  M20 in 65, as it is on my unrestored Z16 broadcast sheet.

I've seen a lot of different W_ codes on some of the metal tags for later years.

To the extent relevant, every single 67 Chevelle I have disassembled (which is north of 25) has had the copper plated bolt.

Correct, the 4th design has the drain hole a little forward of centered on the hump between the two indentions.  So if that pan is original to that engine, that's a new earliest date for the 4th pan!  Thanks -

Not sure why those last two are squished out of shape, but at least you can see the indentions I am talking about.

There were at least 4 different Chevelle/Camaro big block pans used in 67.  Only the 3rd and 4th versions would have been used on 67 Camaro 396's (or maybe only the 4th, depending on when that version began use).

1st style has less indentions on the sides (more than a 66 Chevelle pan but less than the other versions listed below and shown in the pics), and has the front center bolt hole.  I have a late October 66 car with that pan.  I don't have access to one of these pans off the car so don't know what the baffle looks like.

Pics of the 2nd style are below.  2nd style has front center bolt hole.  The baffle has an X pattern stamped in it, rather than the V pattern in 69+ pans.  Not sure when that version started, but it had to be before Dec. 20, 1966.

3rd style is the same as 2nd style except without front center bolt hole.  Per GM documentation that bolt was dropped beginning Dec. 21, 1966.

4th style is the same as 3rd, except the drain hole is moved forward to be in the deepest part of the sump.  This is also identical to a 68 pan.  Not sure when that changed happened, but I have an unrestored car with T0509EG engine that has that pan, which is the earliest verified original I have seen.

Happy hunting!

Keri made the pattern off my unrestored 67 L78 Chevelle.

The right stuff p/n is FPC67WF A  (not FPC67WK A).  And you have to tell them to put the space in before the A or they cannot find it in their computer!!

It is not "perfect" at the bottom bend but is MUCH better than the 68 version which they were selling as 67-68 before.

Good luck!  Jeff Helms

Originality / Muncie identification sticker ?
« on: April 12, 2020, 08:22:35 PM »
Since 68 and prior Muncie's don't have anything in the stamp to tell you what the internals are, and the metal p/n tag in those years does not have the 2-letter broadcast sheet code for the trans on it, I have always assumed there was either a tag, sticker or grease pencil marking of some sort showing the broadcast code.  But I have never found one with any evidence of any of those things.  There is usually a single-digit number brushed on in black paint where the shifter would mount on the tailhousing, but never a broadcast code.

Have any of you every found anything on a pre-69 Muncie with the broadcast code?

What prompted me to ask this is in the pic below.  This is the original M20 trans from a 67 Chevelle SS built at Fremont.  VIN is on the trans so it is original.  The car was wrecked in late 1969 or early 1970 and put in dry storage, and shows a little over 20K miles.  Obviously the engine leaked like a sieve from all the grease present.  But there is the clear outline of a sticker (or something like that) on the side cover.  If you account for the sticker going down into the indention for the corner side cover bolt, it is a perfect oval shape --  too perfect to be some random mark that happened by accident.  It is 1-7/8" long and 1-1/8" tall.  If it was a sticker it would have been raised up on the front edge where it went across the casting number, which would explain why some grease and dirt got behind the leading edge of it to make the dirty spot in the middle at the front.

Any ideas?  Could this be where there was a sticker with the XS broadcast ID code on it ??  Thanks!

Originality / Re: Starter solenoid lever -- retaining pin, or bolt ??

Thanks.  I did also verify on several original late 67 cars that the bolt, lock washer, and thin nut are correct.

Originality / Starter solenoid lever -- retaining pin, or bolt ??
« on: June 05, 2017, 11:59:08 PM »
On the pin (or bolt) that holds the solenoid lever in the drive end of the starter, does anyone know when Delco Remy switched from using a bolt (with a lock washer and thin jamb nut) to using a pin (with a small retaining clip)?

I have verified that 1965 big block starters used the bolt and not the pin.  But I need to know for a 67 (May of 67 dated starter).   I have seen 67 big block starters both ways.  The 67 Chevrolet Chassis Overhaul Manual references a bolt and nut in the disassembly / assembly instructions.  But I suppose that could have been a failure to update the manual after changing to the pin, if a pin is in fact correct.

Any help would be appreciated!
