Originality / Magnum Style Wheels on SS Camaro's
« on: December 13, 2006, 01:17:19 AM »
Was it possible to get "factory" magnum 500 rallye rims on 1969 Camaro's? Were they only available on 396 SS cars?

Thanks.

Thanks Ed.  Any idea what the upside down "D"  and the half sideways "A" are to the left of the regular stamped data?

General Discussion / Re: Rear Leaf Spring Ride Height, Help Me Out
« on: November 23, 2006, 02:36:04 AM »
Hot Rod, thanks for your input.  I will also be installing a set of Competion Engineering traction bars.  They allow relocating the shock to the inside of the spring. I have used these on second generation Nova's and they are a quality product. From what I understand and have seen the '69 rear quarters allow for a wider tire than the 67 / 68 design.

The plan at this point is to buy a set of eaton springs with about an inch of extra arch & the CE traction bars.... then buy a set of 275-60 R15 tires.... set them centered in the wheel well and determine the required back spacing.

Gotta have a plan, right?

General Discussion / Rear Leaf Spring Ride Height, Help Me Out
« on: November 21, 2006, 12:25:21 AM »
1969 Camaro owners I need your help.

I am in the market for a set of new leaf springs for my '69 SS Camaro. I like the 70's Big-n-Littles rake look and will be buying a set of 15 inch TTO's and new tires. Rear will be the metrified equivalent L-60-15 , front E-70-15.

Here is where I need your help. I need to determine how much extra arch I need before I order my rear leaf springs. (I don't want to run air shocks.) So if you have a '69 Camaro with newer leaf springs could you measure the distance from the axle c/l to the top of the wheel well opening? I am hoping to get a consensus of what a stock spring ride height will be so I can adjust accordingly. Based on what I have gathered here on the Team Camaro website I am thinking 1-1/2" extra arch will be good.

My Camaro's current 37 year old springs are sagging so I can't get a point of reference without some help. The reverse rake look with 14" white wall ralleye's just ain't cuttin' it.

Any help would be sincerely appreciated.

Originality / Re: Original Air Cleaner for 69 SS
« on: November 13, 2006, 01:57:25 AM »
<<shows a few pictures of a supposed original '69 SS 350 and it looks to me to have a chrome air cleaner lid as well as the polished finned aluminum valve covers. >>

No '69 ever had polished finned aluminum valve covers - that's an owner-inspired modification to the as-cast finish on the owner-added Z/28 valve covers (the same ones used on the Corvette). The current GM replacements are polished, but they were never that way in production. Only the chrome air cleaner lid is correct, and all L48's had painted stamped steel valve covers.

Ok, so you are saying these are Z-28 or vette valve covers.  I would agree that the air cleaner doesn't appear to be a GM part, based on photos I have seen.

Thanks to alll for your input.

What model / vintage GM would you say the valve covers and air cleaner appear to be?

Gentlemen,

So help me out here.  Take a look again at the picture I originally posted.  The guy who originally bought this car was a GM service manager and owned this car from when it was new in early 1970 until he died in 2003.  Now that I have read your other comments I am wondering if the valve covers and air cleaner currently on the car were original or perhaps non original but NOS GM parts?  The original owner surely had access to some goodies as the GM service manager.

Any comments would e sincerely appreciated.

As a newbie I didn't notice, don't know all the players yet.  But the CRG & Team Camaro websites are great.

Thanks for the information Kevin W.  I found out from the Team Camaro website that the goo driping out of the rivets is caulking they applied at the factory.

Yep, it's mine.

Could you break down the numbers on this cowl tag and tell me if it looks legit?

Thanks for your time.

I also listed this question on the Team Camaro Forum.

clwilcox33 responded as follows:

"There should also be a P. They were stamps used by inspectors at the Fisher Body plant."

It's amazing how some of this ratty looking stuff, like these Chevy Orange letters, is factory original.

On my 69 SS, adjacent to the cowl tag, are the letters "B" and "T" in Chevy Orange engine paint

Any idea what this is all about?

Originality / Original Air Cleaner for 69 SS

Does anyone have a picture of what the original air cleaner looked like on a '69 Camaro with the SS 350 cu. in 300 H.P. engine?  Just curious if this set-up is correct, which I kind of doubt.

Thanks in advance.

Maintenance / Re: Fuel Lead Additive

Thanks for all the advice gang.  Having lived thru the chane-over era from leaded fuels to unleaded fuels I remebered it was quite the hot topic back then.  Sounds like it is a non issue for my 1969 occasional driver.
