Decoding/Numbers / 68 Camaro big block or not?
« on: April 25, 2006, 08:13:57 PM »
How can I tell if a 68 Camaro was originally big block car?  The car I am looking at has a 350 in it that is not original but the owner says he thinks it originally came with a 396.  If it was originally a 396, does that mean it also was an SS?
Thanks
Bob

Here are the Numbers on The attached tag on the passenger side vertical surface of my THM 400.  I have been unable to find info to decode.  Any help appreciated.

I wish.  Date code is right on but the blue code from what I've read needs to be 732 Z: Bright Blue buckets.  Also, style code needs to be 12637.

You are right.  I had already decoded the cowl tag : 3L from the cowl tag is RPO Z22 and 4N is RPO L35.
Complete Cowl Tag:
04A                 A549
67-12437    LOS-29496 BODY
717-Z         C-C      Paint
 W2MG3L
4N

I decode a 67 Camaro Coupe, std interior, made in Van Nuys, Blue interior with bucket seats no headrests, Color Ermine White, No Vinyl Top,Windshield only tinted, TH 400 since made in Van Nuys, center console, RS package, SS package w/ 396/325hp.  My other question is how many like this were made?  My guess is about 300.

I think I just found the answer to my own question.  According to CRG page www.camaros.org/engine.shtml the 396/325hp was only offered with the SS package.  That would make my '67 an RS/SS.  If this is incorrect let me know.

Thanks to CRG for the comprehensive info!!

Does the RPO L35 and RPO Z22 mean that a 1967 Camaro is an RS/SS?  These are included on its cowl tag.  I know the L35 is the 396/325hp engine, but was that engine only supplied with the SS package?
Thanks, Bob
