Originality / 1968 convertible basket case
« on: June 04, 2008, 01:49:03 PM »
Hello I just purchased a botched restoration attempt on a 1968 camaro conv.  Body is extremely rusty and to make things worse the drivers side inner and outer rockers have been replaced and appear to be installed totally wrong.  The owner was just ready to get out from under this thing so I was able to purchase it right.   Numbers match 327 powerglide, red with black interior. I suspect the owner would have taken this body to the junkyard and sell off everything else had I not bought it.  Thats how frustrated he was with what he had paid  a sandblast shop to do to this car.  I almost passed on the car because of all this, but I couldn't bear to see this car be lost to history forever.  I'll start on it after I finish a 69 mustang GT that i'm doing for myself.   I hope I can repair this body I may have to seek professional help on this one!!

Originality / Re: Rocker Arms SBC with "O" on the end
« on: April 30, 2008, 08:28:35 PM »
I believe the "o" stamped rockers are a long slot rocker for higher performance engines. The newer rockers are also long slot as GM probably wanted to standardize a p/n. As opposed to the older low performance rocker arm which wasn't a long slot. Higher lift camshafts required a long slot rocker.

Originality / DZ harmonic balancer VS LT1 harmonic balancer
« on: May 08, 2006, 05:06:18 AM »
Hello. Can anyone tell me if a DZ 302 balancer and a LT1 balancer are interchangable? I'm wondering if the timing marks are in the same location. The only visable difference I've noticed is the 3 raised portions on the DZ balancer vs the flat surface on the LT1. I have not had a chance to hold the 2 together to compare if the timing marks are the same. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: 1967 Cowl Tag Date and Engine Build Date
« on: April 28, 2006, 04:02:57 AM »
Very well explained bertfam, Thank you. I know my cars are what they are. I have compared my Z11 trim tag to many other Z11 cars and it looks to me to be original. Other clues surface also when you do a restoration. I recall stripping paint and gunk from deep in the cowl area and under all that was some slight orange overspray from when they painted the stripes. Many other items as well. My Z/28 is correct for the reasons listed prior. I could see how someone who doesn't know the hobby as well as we do could easily be taken advantage of. Take care.

Hello everyone. I have no opinion about the trim tag being original or not, however I do have a question.  It was stated that repo tags were being manufactured as early as the early eighties. Could the members who have commented about this particular tag provide myself and others w/ some info to lookout for when looking at a tag on a potential purchase?

Also, with the value of these cars being what they are now,  I see why someone who is dishonest would want a repo tag to represent a car that isn't correct.  However in the early 80's, (and correct me if i'm wrong please) these cars were still affordable and I would think that repo tag would have done someone little good.  I would include highly desireable cars (pacecars, Z/28's copo's) in the affordable group as well, in the early 80's.
I look forward to opinions on this statement.

When I purchased my 69 Z/28 3 years ago, I put alot of faith in the X77 on the trim tag. I'm sure other people do as well. I also put faith in the DZ stamp on the block. I was certain my car was a genuine z/28. How do I know? If someone was going to fake this car, they wouldn't have put air flow research heads on the engine. They wouldn't have painted it green when it was originally Daytona yellow. The cars VIN # was right where it was supposed to be by the oil filter under 1/4 inch of grime. There is X7 written in grease pencil behind the rear seat on the body on the passenger side. ( I'm assuming that means x77) I may have gotten lucky, the VIN and the X7 I didn't find until after I owned the car.

In case anybody is wondering, the Airflow Research heads are gone. I did a complete rotisorie restoration on the whole car and yes it's back to 76 76 Daytona yellow w/ black stripes!!

Restoration / Re: re-stamping a block
« on: April 21, 2006, 03:41:47 AM »
Whatever happened to the enjoyment of driving your camaro? Or any old car for that matter? I've owned 6 camaros in my life time so far. My first car at 16 was a 83 camaro with a 4 cyl. Didn't much care about originality back then. As long as it started and ran. Dad didn't think I needed a v-8. He was probably right! Restamping, matching numbers, its all crazy!!!!!  Lets keep it goin!

Maintenance / Re: Fuel / Octane Rating
« on: April 19, 2006, 04:52:21 AM »
Thanks to JohnZ and lakeholme for responding to the questions posed by Adz28 and my self.  JohnZ how do you measure the amount of advance on the mechanical and vacuum advance?  Do you have to do it on a distributer machine? Can it be done on the car?  Should my distributer use the small rubber bushing under the mechanical advance?   Is your total advance 34 degrees or does the vac advance provide additional on top of that? (Sorry for all the questions!)  I must also apologise to Adz28 for stepping on his post. He still hasn't gotton his answer to his original question about 100 and 110 octane.  JohnZ, or anyone else's comments are appreciated. Thanks

Hello. I'm interested in reading some of the feedback comments on this subject also. My 302 detonates bad under full throttle. The only time it doesn't detonate is when the engine is cold. The car runs absolutely perfect under full throttle until it warms up. (5 minutes or so.) I used some Lucus octane boost and that helps some, but not near enough. With 11:1 engines are we stuck with running racing gas? Or prehaps a blend of racing gas/94 sunoco? Please comment on this and let us know if other 302 engines have simular characteristics. Thank you in advance. (ADz28, hope you don't mind me adding to your question. Thanks. PACE&Z2869)

Decoding/Numbers / Re: COWL TAG HAS ME PUZZLED.. Is it worth while?
« on: April 13, 2006, 07:16:24 AM »
You've taken a beating from everyone now about removing that cowl tag. Now the bad news, you said your not going to remove the VIN tag... however when you get your windshield out, you'll most likely see that you dash panel is rusted out... and you guessed it, you'll have to remove your VIN plate to attach it to the new dash panel you'll have to install. Good luck

Restoration / Re: Bleeding Brakes
« on: April 13, 2006, 07:02:10 AM »
Hello 67ragmaro, go to maintenance section on this site. Find my post thats titled "Round proportioning valve? Front brake bleeding" I had a simular if not identicle problem w/ my restored 69 z/28. the round proportioning/ accumulator valve (one of two valves by booster) was sucking air in around the plunger on the backside of this valve. (under the rubber cap) every time the brake pedal was released introducing new air into the system. I'm assuming rour 67 has this valve. I explained everything in detail in that posting. Bottom line I installed a rebuild kit from Heartbeat City in the valve which includes 2 o-rings and a seal. Seal was the culprit. Please respond back at this posting and let me know if you were able to find my old posting and if this seems to be your problem as well. PACE&Z2869

Maintenance / Re: 69 Z/28 engine stands
« on: April 12, 2006, 05:52:46 AM »
Hello. Your reply to TODD as far as the clutch chatter and driveline vibration is exactly what my 69 z/28 that i just finished (98 miles and 2 weeks ago) is experiencing. I now wonder if my local GM dealer sold me the wrong engine mounts? These mounts have the interlocking feature and are original GM mounts. William you mentioned that the service replacment mounts for 67 and 68 also now have the interlock. I'll check for that 1/4 inch gap that you refered to in your reply that might exist if I have the wrong mounts. William could you or anyone else provide the correct p/n for rubber engine mount (GM) for 69 z/28, and also 67-68 p/n to see if I indeed do have the wrong mounts. Thank you in advance.
