General Discussion / Camaro Nationals Clarification 6/22 -6/23

Fellow Camaro Enthusiast, It seems that due to unclear advertising on some websites, some Camaro owners may have inadvertently registered for the show at Carlisle fairgrounds next weekend; thinking they were registering for the Camaro Nationals. The American Camaro Association Inc. and the Maryland Camaro Club Inc. are sorry for any confusion these websites may have created. To that end, any Camaro that arrives unregistered at the Camaro Nationals in Frederick Maryland, but with their credentials or window sticker from this year"s Carlisle fairgrounds event, will be allowed entry into the appropriate Non-Judged or Participant-Vote Judged class at the Camaro Nationals at no additional charge. As in years past, our Participant Vote classes offer three awards in each of three classes per generation for a total of 15 classes, plus, this year, a grand prize of $100 cash and a $50 Lowe"s Gift Card for the Camaro with the highest number of individual votes. The Camaro Nationals in Frederick Maryland is expecting a solid 500 Camaros. Over 300 Camaros already registered in all 5 generations...and add to that, an average of 150 -200 Camaros that normally arrive "day of show"; 25 vendors including: Tom Henry Chevrolet & Racing, Win Kelley GM Superstore, T & T Performance, SLP, American High Performance, TMI Products, Right Stuff Detailing, Automotive Accents LTD., and Acme Apparel Group, HTI / Camaro Performers, and more. Thirty-one Bowtie and Legend Concours Camaros will be displayed and judged in an Air-Condfitioned building; an expanded Kids Area, with pony rides, petting zoo and moon bounce, will round out this great event. Hi John,

I used one of the new dash pads made by CHQ. I'm sure it is the one you are referencing. I was very happy with it. It fits perfect. It has more detail then the previous repops. You'll notice a much better fit near the VIN tag. I'll buy this one again the next time we need a new pad.

We have restored four and helped with some detailing on a fifth 68 RS. I've never seen any of these headlamp door bumper brackets with any signs of plating.

Hi Sonet,
You might check for a hole for the center support rod in the subframe center support. If there is no hole then for sure you had the earlier 68 style spolier. If you have a hole there then someone may have added it or it was put there from the factory. Having a hole in the support isn't conclusive, but may give you some additional food for thought. I've attached a photo of the center support brace on the front of the subframe with a hole for the spoiler center rod. On this example the hole wasn't centered so I'm assuming someone drilled it after production.

Finding a correctly seamed un-padded vinyl top has been a real challenge. I found that SMS Fabrics (http://www.smsautofabrics.com/)  in Oregon has the correct un-padded material. They made two tops for us. Upon inspection I was very disappointed with the look of the seams. They looked as if a machine pressed them too hard and flattened out or distorted the original vinyl grain.

I wanted to return them for a refund. SMS said they don't refund but they said they would make me a satisfied customer by re-making the tops. I agreed and sent the original two back to them. They have been very difficult to communicate with, by not returning calls. So the latest is that they looked at the two tops I sent back and told me "The seams are perfect. There is nothing wrong with their tops" You know, I expected that reply. I'm calling them tomorrow and will escalate the issue. What makes this all even more disturbing was the price I paid. With shipping, the two tops were $600. This is just about 3 times the price of the tops from Rick's. SMS said they were the only company using the original un-padded material. For that I expected the cost to be higher.

So to answer your question, no I haven't found a correctly seamed top. Not yet! We will not have the 68 RS/SS at the nationals. But, if all goes well we will have a 69 Daytona Yellow Z/28 with a vinyl top.

We are about to install a vinyl top on a 68. I have seen top manufacturers make the top with the A-pillar post vinyl overlapped by the top section. I have seen others that overlap the top section with the A-pillar post section. Some people say the top section should overlap the A-pillar post piece allowing water to run off of the top and over that seam. Others tell me that the water is driven up the A-pillar post during driving and hence the A-pillar piece should be on top of the roof piece. Does anyone have an original 68 vinyl top to verify the pillar post seam? See attached photo ... Also any recommendations for a source for the correct top would be appreciated.

We have a 68 SS that has original factory full hubcaps. I know that standard steel wheels with "dog dish" hubcaps had the wheels painted body color. Were the steel wheels also painted body color with the full hubcaps?
