Decoding/Numbers / Re: 1968 Z28 piston
« on: December 24, 2011, 04:07:36 AM »
There were two different design pistons used in the 1968 302.  The first design was a carryover from 1967 and had a part #3927177.  Sometime in production they started using a second design piston and it had the part #3946876.  My 1968 07C Z28 had the second design piston.  I have never seen a part number stamped on the piston.  There was a very marked difference in the design of the piston top on the two pistons.  The early piston looked identical to the earlier 327 HP piston.  The later piston looked like the 1969 design....BTW the late 1968 and 1969 pistons had the same part number.

One other detail....everything I have seen written about the second design piston states that it is a floating pin piston.  But...when I tore down my original 302 block it did indeed have the late floating pin piston but the pins were pressed into the rods.  Don't know for sure, but maybe they ran out of the "Pink" floating rods and had to use some "Pink" pressed pin rods when my engine was assembled.  It was assemble on June 19, 1968.

I'm not sure there has been anything other than a DZ with full floating pin. The pin always floats thru the piston.

Originality / Re: '69 Z/28 positive battery cable
« on: November 20, 2011, 05:59:00 PM »
I went thru all the broadcast sheets that I have and all the Z's (20-30 of them) have a MF cable except one that has a BR cable on it. No other docs on that car, but I'd guess that car probably had T60.
Hey, if it fits, that's what matters...

BTW, the Z cables on the T60 page are only if the car has T60. 6290592 would have been the cable for the L6 and the base LF7/L14 motors with T60, per that page. Not to say it couldn't have other usages....

I do not see MF cables reproduced. The BR is the one most people say is corrrect. The BR  fits tight on the Y33 battery, though. Another thing with no definitive answer. What would Jerry M. use?

The optional T60 HD battery cables (small block) part# for small block Pos 6290591BW, & Neg 6296756BH These were used in conjuction with the R69 70ah battery.

The Z28 came equipped prior 5/69 with Y55 top terminal battery. The two codes I have seen on broadcast sheets are MF(for pos cable and BF (for neg cable). I will dig up the part# and pics. Z28's built 5/69 and after came standard with Y77 battery and cables 6297684AS (pos cable) 7 6297651AV (neg cable).

Steve, page T60-A1 shows #6290591 for Z/28. The reporo catalogues show #6290592 for Z/28. I find it odd that Z/28 cables are in the T60 section at all. My experience with #6290592 is that they are very tight in length. The extra length of the #6290591 would fit better on the Y55 battery.

John Z, is it the 51 or 52 positive cable? do you have the originals? Thanks.

I replaced mine ten years ago - they were corroded internally.

The AIM shows the Z/28 cables under the T60 option. The XXXXX51 cable seems to be the one but the vendors say XXXXX52 is correct. It is weird that the Z/28 cables are shown uinder the T60 option, but which number is correct? Thanks.

Originality / '69 Z/28 positive battery cable
« on: November 08, 2011, 02:31:42 AM »
Is the # 6290592 the right cable for the #Y55 battery?  Or is the #6290591 as shown on T60-A1 in the AIM? It is interesting that the Z/28 cables are shown in the HD battery section. It seems a bit confusing.

Way easier for leaves and trash to build up. I cleaned a bunch of crud out of my rockers.

Isn't the bracket slanted more for the cowl air cleaner than the open element?  It is for the '69 model.

I had my engine oil analyzed a few years back to check on wear, zinc content etc. Found I had a coolant leak. It was comimng thru the screw in rocker studs. I check it once a year now. You can visually check by looking carefully in the oil return area of the heads.

Restoration / Re: 69 front sub frame alignment
« on: July 30, 2011, 04:47:16 PM »
If all the bolts are loose the subframe can "float" around. The sheetmetal is anchored at the firewall and radiator support. The subframes were installed under an assembled body per the CRG assembly report. The inner fender to frame brackets must be loose also. Steering column alignment could be a problem if too far off.
