There was a guy on YouTube, Centurybob, who had videos on resealing compressors who I watched to reseal a 90’s era R4  compressor and bought parts from him which worked well.  Memory was he had same for earlier piston types.   It was ~years ago so don’t know if he’s still in business. Good luck. Something that I’ve been wondering about trying for my 68 w/ factory AC

Thanks for responses, nothing else stored in car so seat cushion I guess.  I guess I’ll pull out back seat and see what damage was done.

I have a 68 project. Runs and I have it parked in a closed garage. I opened trunk for first time in about 6 mo or so and found two nests in rear corners of trunk.  I’ve had car in same place for -10 years and never had anything nest in it so on one hand a surprise but given I’ve trapped mice in garage previously, I guess not too surprising. Interesting to me is I didn’t find droppings but I’m no rodent expert.

I have the original basic low back buckets and bench rear seat, vinyl covered.  Looking at rear of back seat, padding looks brownish but guessing this is from rear cushion regardless? Just curious if anyone knows for sure.  I haven’t tried to pull out rear bench to look yet.

Jhere1, generally it seems the likelihood a rare car posted on eBay is a fake is similar to what you’d think if you saw a Picasso posted on eBay.  Read thru threads on the Decoding / Numbers to get a sense of what’s out there.  I’m just a lurker on the threads and can only say beware.  These guys here are experts and it’s a good idea to follow the consensus advice

I’ve been following discussion - really fascinating and interesting.  I think it’s great that so many are willing to share your knowledge / opinions and DDM is attempting to accurately represent the car.  Until now, there has been nothing for which I could offer an opinion or advice. 

Commenting on the suggestion that the car should be assumed real until proven to be a fake.

In collectibles, whether baseball cards, art, cars, etc. , when there are many more fakes than real items the value comes from proving the item is real - not asserting something is real until proven fake.  It’s why provenance is so valuable in the art world - where sometimes even experts can’t distinguish brush strokes of masters vs fakers.   

My opinion, if the seller of the car wants top dollar it’s their responsibility to do the work and/or pay for the provenance.  This isn’t like a court of law where the jury is required to find the item real unless proven false.   Of course, if provenance isn’t or can’t be provided then the seller chooses how to represent the car and the community chooses how to judge the car - essentially a community based validation/invalidation of the provenance offered.  Then it’s up to the market to decide and buyer’s job to protect themselves.

according to the SMP catalog the SMP VC24A "B1" is the replacement for 1115355.  Since I'm just doing this for interest, not originality I'll just get it to play around for now. I appreciate the info.

General Discussion / 68 std distributor 1111440 and vacuum advance can

Hi,
I'm getting my car running after sitting ~15 years.  The vacuum advance can is not working and I need a replacement.
I've read the previous threads, JohnZ's 101,  and advice (thanks to all, great info here!). I plan to get a "B28" and go to manifold port as recommended. I found an Airtex branded version PN  #4V1053 on Rockauto.
Two questions.
- I have the base 327/210hp with a 2bbl rochester.  It appears the vacuum for choke pull off at bottom back is manifold vacuum. Just checking that would work if I tee in there.

- I would like, for curiosity, get a vacuum can for the ported vac as it is now and get it running as it used to run and then switch. The current can is marked MS 355 15.  There are SMP VC171 "B22", VC24A "B1", VC169 "B9" cans listed in Rockauto as replacements for original.  Does anyone know the "correct" SMP can number or PN which corresponds to the "355" can?

Restoration / 68 std headlight bucket grill bracket direction

I was comparing the original headlight buckets from my 68 base coupe and some others I bought years ago as potential replacements. The original has the bracket for the grill facing to be mounted to from the rear which matches what the AIM shows.  The replacement has the bracket reversed to mate with bracket on grill from the front.  They appear identical other than the bracket direction. Both have a CHEV SAE H 68 stamp. The only other difference I see is that on the originals there is a 40 stamped on the driver bucket and a 41 on the passenger side bucket. 

Just curious as to whether the design changed at some point, though my car is a 06 build.  Or they are for something else?

I’ve been wondering the same thing Aggie.  Also a rookie and planning to learn as I go.  I have an old suburban I was going to learn & repaint before doing work on my Camaro.  Can’t make the suburban look worse than  does now.

I read a lot of posts also and you find a lot of varying opinions on what is best which I read as there isn’t only one true way.  I found a person locally who seems to do nice work and asked what he does.  He uses an etching primer over bare metal (DuPont nason grey etching).  He said if you let sit for too long before you get around to painting (which is what I will do) you would have to repaint the etching primer before spraying a urethane primer. (DuPont nason poly-urethane primer - the guy likes DuPont paints, seems most people have a brand they like religiously.)

For better or worse, that’s what I’m going to start with unless I hear something convincing otherwise.

I happen to have bumper off my 68 std coupe 06A build NOR. Car is a survivor, I have it since 74 and don't believe bumper was changed prior.  Only numbers I could find were on passenger side - 80E23  - 3 is upside down.

Body Plate Build Date: 06A
Jack Mast Section: trapezoidal
Jack Base: nothing stamped
Rivet on jacking mech 8E
no date code on mast that I can see but mast is stamped with PATENT 3163925

I also have "Camaro 1968 UN" stamped in the bumper hook
