Decoding/Numbers / '69 350/300 hp block number ID...
« on: June 10, 2013, 04:51:48 PM »
Hey experts, got a possible score for a friend on a 350/300 block and want to authenticate some numbering. Deck pad is: T0512HA, which Tonowanda, mid May, and I believe "HA" means originally with smog pump?

Engine casting # is:  8956618. I know there were a few casting #'s used for 69 350's, is this one correct for 350?

I'm trying to make sure that this is not a "DZ" motor, because even though that would be a good find, would not be correct for his '69 pace car (w/ small block).

Would you also identify for me exactly where the "DZ" or other codes are located on the oil filter boss? (pics welcomed)

Decoding/Numbers / Correct intake numbers
« on: March 15, 2013, 05:39:14 PM »
Got a line on an intake for a 69 small block and need some help to properly identify. I've got the original block in the car – 350/300hp, but not intake. (It's a Tonowanda code block).

Other than the date code, what would be the correct casting number(s) that I would be looking for on the intake? Also, there is a letter code cast in front of the carb. I've seen "R" and "T" and others, which ones would be correct for '69 350/300? Does that matter?

Decoding/Numbers / Intake Letter
« on: November 19, 2012, 04:00:21 PM »
I've noticed that 4 barrel intakes for small blocks have a letter stamp on them, as well as the usual casting/date codes, etc. What do those letters mean?

Q:  If I have a '69 350/300hp, with the correct intake, what would that letter be? (Early March motor date code).

Decoding/Numbers / 69 Water Pump Numbers
« on: October 03, 2012, 03:06:34 PM »
Need some help verifying casting and date numbers on a water pump. 1969 350/300hp. I found one to purchase, but want to make sure it's correct for this year and motor. Here's the numbers:

Casting:  3953692
Date:    A  26  0

Above Casting Number:  GM16

My original motor is first week of March, so this date code is plausible...

Decoding/Numbers / Tonowanda enging codes
« on: September 25, 2012, 12:32:53 AM »
I was under the impression that all "T" code motor stamps were high performance motors. Is that the case, or did GM make sedan and 'base' level motors in Tonowanda? Could there be such a thing as a "T" coded motor that was not a 350/300hp for example?

Originality / 69 Horn GM Numbers
« on: September 12, 2012, 02:58:33 PM »
I know you guys are wealth of info and experience on numbers. I've got a lead on some NOS GM horns. Ad says: "A" & "F" tone horns with original locking nuts - Gm Part#'s 1892163 & 1892164. Are those correct for 1969 Camaro? (I'm assuming most 69 GM models...)

Mild Modifications / HEI Distributor Upgrade Advice Request...
« on: July 23, 2012, 03:01:44 PM »
For street use prior to full restoration, I'm installing a ProComp HEI dist on the '69 350/300hp. In reading up on it, I've come across a couple of concerns maybe you can provide some insight on:

First, I've heard that there might be issues with the "mechanical" voltage regulator in running one of these affecting the distributor module, and possibly causing early failure if it's not a quality module. Any experience with that, or recommendations?

Also, should I run a hotter spark plug? Currently running the equivalent of a AC R-44.

Thanks...

Originality / RS Grill Black, Correct Finish..?
« on: April 06, 2012, 01:01:36 AM »
Hey guys. I came across an NOS RS Grill for sale, so I snagged it. It's in pretty decent shape for it's age, but I'm wondering what the correct finish for the "black" part of the grill? Was it simply the black plastic from GM, or did they finish it with some kind of low-gloss black paint?

Restoration / Engine Block Decked, Stamp Codes Gone...
« on: March 21, 2012, 01:00:57 PM »
A buddy has a '69 SS/RS without the original motor, and we've been looking on and off for a correct SB for the car. I found one, but the block has been decked in the rebuild, and the original date/engine codes are gone on the stamp pad. It's a "K" code (late '68).

How does this effect value - as his car is a collectable Camaro?

Also, I've heard of "re-stamping", which I assume is replicating the code back on the pad. Is this frowned upon, or not so bad if the date on the motor matches?

Thx.

Mild Modifications / 14x7 to 15x7 Rally Wheel Swap...
« on: February 21, 2012, 02:15:00 PM »
I've got a '69 with original 14x7 Rally's and am looking to put a set 15x7's on. Do I have to find '68-69 wheels, or will the early 70s "FW" code wheels work the same?

My research shows that the original 14x7's have a 4" backspace. 15x7's?

Decoding/Numbers / 69 Pace Car, Original Dealer Invoice
« on: February 08, 2012, 11:27:01 PM »
I'm fortunate not only to be the owner of a '69 Pace Car Camaro, but also have the original GM Protect-O-Plate and the original dealer invoice that went with the sale of the car. On this sheet are two areas of curiosity I could use your help with:

One, is in an area on the invoice that contains the following: Description, Color, Trim, Key & Eng. No., and Salesman. These all have what I would expect filled into each category, but the "Eng. No." is typed as "T-9L10". I know I have the original motor in the car, because the engine date code on the head deck is the same as what is on the Protect-O-Plate. This car came with a 350/300hp SB. Any idea what that code would mean?

The other is under "Factory or Dealer Installed Accessories". On the left column are all the options ordered on the car, but to the right on top are the words "Stereo Tape". Does that mean this car was ordered with a dealer installed 8-track?

Thanks for any insight...

Restoration / Who does steering box rebuilds?
« on: August 26, 2011, 06:47:00 PM »
Trying to sort out a few minor issues with my front end, but one of the things that came up is the steering box, and the fact that it may need to be rebuilt.

First, how do I determine whether or not it's worn to the point of need a rebuild?

Next, who's a good supplier of said service?

('69 Camaro SS/RS with Power Steering & N44 close ratio box.)

Originality / Negative battery cable hook-up
« on: August 04, 2011, 01:54:53 AM »
And one more, where does the negative battery cable correctly hook up to the engine? (350/300hp - Quad., no air).

I always thought it was the the thermostat bolt, but my engine guy was skeptical.

Originality / Correct heater hose routing
« on: August 04, 2011, 01:52:16 AM »
Hey guys, after a complete engine restoration on the 350/300hp as you might expect, I have a few minor details to adjust and clean up. I wondering if someone can describe or show me the correct routing for the lower heater hose (behind the alternator on the intake.)  The front one on top of the water pump is a no branier, but the one to the intake has to tuck under the alternator bracket, and still seems to kink a little.

Restoration / 69 Assembly Manual, Best Place to Buy...?
« on: July 29, 2011, 08:18:18 PM »
I'm looking to purchase one for '69 Camaro. They are available on eBay and elsewhere, but describe some of the pages as "blank" or "possible illegible", due to poor originals, or something like that. Is that something you just have to accept, or are there better sources?
