Restoration / 69 Steering Pump & Steering Box Questions
« on: July 09, 2013, 03:00:32 AM »
I am converting my 6 Cylinder Camaro into a Z/28 Clone. I planning on using my stock original 6 Cylinder Steering Box & Pump.

What is the difference between the 6 cylinder pump and a stock SB pump and can I use my original pump?

I took my steering box to a steering specialist today and he informed me that my steering box is an original unit for my car, however it has been repaired a long time ago. He said that the stock base car steering box should be a 4 & 1/4 turn lock to lock. He also informed me that I have a variable 3 worm gear. He is going to rebuild the box, but wants to know if I want the same variable gear, or a 3 worm gear constant. or close ratio unit.

It was a lot for information to absorb as I am not familiar with steering box's or power steering pumps for that matter. I told him that I would investigate the options and let him know how I want him to proceed.

Hopefully I will get some good advice here that will point me in the right direction.

I am looking to find out which approach would be best suited for my application.

Restoration / 715 Interior restoration questions
« on: July 09, 2013, 02:59:23 AM »
I have been trying to decide which way to go with my interior. I have a 715 Dark Blue Standard interior. I would like to freshen up my original Kick Panels, Console and seat backs. The seat backs are starting to crumble at bit at the top corners and I have thought of replacing them, but I read that the fit is really bad. I am wondering if I can paint them successfully. I have read different opinions on which products to use. I have checked with SEM and also Heart Beat City. They both list Interior dye and paint.

I would like to know what is the best way to duplicate the original colour as well as get an original finish.

I am in the process of converting my 69 Camaro 3 speed auto on the tree to a 4 speed car. I currently have my original steering column that is in perfect shape and I also have a donor 4 speed steering column. My goal is to remove my shifter handle and use the collar from the 4 speed column.

Is this possible and is it the best approach. Or should I use the 4 speed column? The 4 speed column is in rough shape compared to my original. I am looking for the most cost effective and productive way to do the conversion.

Also curious what are the major differences between the columns other than the shifter. I have not taken it apart yet, so I am looking to find out which is the best way to go. The original column is in excellent shape like I said. The 4 speed unit will need a full restoration.

I started a thread at TC as well. Hoping to get some great info here.

Restoration / Need a pic of 69 Z/28 Drive Shaft Stripes
« on: July 09, 2013, 02:47:39 AM »
Can someone post a pic of 69 Z/28 Drive Shaft Stripes or any 69 stripes that would be relevant. I am getting ready to paint my driveshaft and I want to make sure that I get the colors right. My marks of where they were are plainly visible, just not the color combination.

Thanks

Restoration / 302 Crank Pulley not working on 350 LT1
« on: May 28, 2013, 07:47:38 AM »
I started to mock up my motor with all of the accessory brackets and hardware and discovered that it looks like the 302 harmonic balancer pulley will not line up with the power steering and water pump pulleys. It appears that the 350 harmonic balancer is not as wide as the 302 harmonic balancer, which means that the crank pulley sits about 1/4 inch back out of alignment.

Should I use a LT1 350 crank pulley?

The water pump pulley is a 302 Pulley as is the power steering pulley.

The alternator and brackets are all stock 302 parts.

It looks like the everything lines up except the crank pulley. I used all stock 302 parts thinking that everything would like up ok, but, that is not the case.

Has anyone come across this situation before. Would the 350 LT1 pulley solve my dilemma?

Restoration / Sticker Kit
« on: May 24, 2013, 08:20:01 AM »
I purchased this sticker kit and I am wondering about the leaf spring stickers. All of the restored 69 Z/28's I have seen have yellow leaf spring stickers. The ones I was sent have silver stickers. Which would be correct for a 69 Z/28.

Restoration / Correct 69 Z/28 Coil Springs
« on: May 12, 2013, 05:29:07 AM »
Here are the coils springs that came out of my car on the left. The ones on the right are the ones I was planning to put in my car. The ones on the right are  small block springs and the ones on the left are the factory 6 cylinder springs. The 6 cylinder springs are longer than the V8 springs. I am wondering which springs to use in  my car. I don't want my car to sit any lower in the front than it was with the 6 cylinder motor. Just curious what the experts know about coil spring rates and ride height etc.

Restoration / Drive Shaft Restoration
« on: May 12, 2013, 05:28:03 AM »
I am looking to get the original finish on my drive shaft, but I have never seen a picture of what a new one would look like. Does anyone have a picture of a new drive shaft or a drive shaft that is restored to factory specs. I have sen several versions of restored drive shafts, but would like to know which is correct.

Restoration / Ball Joints 69 Camaro
« on: May 12, 2013, 05:26:22 AM »
Here is a comparison between the stock ball joints and the after market units I purchased. They appear to be quite different. I am curious if other brands like the ones at Heart Beat City are closer to original than the ones I have currently. I plan to rivet the new ball joints in like the factory. I am hoping that it is possible to find units that look more correct that the repops.

Restoration / Subframe Crisis
« on: March 20, 2013, 09:23:47 AM »
Any idea what this was?

This...

And this...

And this...

And this...

And this...

I am not sure how bad it is yet, but I will find out soon enough. It looks like the subframe washers have disintegrated. When I loosened them up with the impact driver, the old parts just crumbled into dust. I am hoping that the subframe is ok. And that it does not need to be removed and repaired.

The original plan was not to remove the subframe, but that plan may change, depending on the severity of the rust damage.

If anyone has experienced this situation before I would love to hear about it and hear about some solutions to this potentially nasty situation.
