General Discussion / Rear Axle Carriers
« on: June 24, 2011, 07:08:29 PM »
I have not been able to find any thing in-the CRG site on the different carrier series.
Is there a link that explains the differences and how one can identify which is which.

Thanks!

Restoration / Power Feed wire on firewall.
« on: February 17, 2011, 12:45:13 AM »

In a previous post one of our members (boston15) posted the picture at the URL below. The picture shows the vacuum lines that go to the head light switch for an RS model. Just bellow the vacuum line grommet there is a red wire. (It is some kind of a power feed).  What is this for?

http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?action=dlattach;topic=7540.0;attach=6057;image

I have an RS Convertible and the power feed I have is an orange and black wire that comes from the circuit breaker. But my orange and black wire feeds into the dash at a spot just below the fuse box. I cannot figure out what the red wire is in this picture. My car does have a hole at this spot. Am I missing something?

Is it possible this wire is the power feed for a car that has power windows?

Restoration / Wheel Well Trim for 68 RS
« on: January 17, 2011, 04:30:37 PM »

I have read several posts on this subject, in several forums and I'm still confused...(Sorry).
(I hope no one gets offended that I am asking several forums the same question..but I have received mixed answers and really need some direction here)

I know that the rear wheel well trim on an RS is different..and I know that the part numbers are:

7795063 Right rear wheel molding
7795064 Left rear wheel molding

However, here is the confusion:  I have a been told that the front  is ALSO different on the RS  than on  regular trim.  But I cannot find a separate part number. I can only find the numbers below which  is for both trim styles.

9785880 Left front wheel molding
9785881 Right front wheel molding

To add to the confusion, I have booklet called: 68 Camaro Illustrated Facts (Features and Specification Manual). This book shows a picture of an RS and it clearly shows wheel trim that only goes to the horizontal trim and NOT below on front AND back wheels.  The booklet appears to be of the correct vintage and has very detailed specifications and feature list. (But no where can I find evidence that this is a GM manual.)

What is the correct part number for the front wheel well moldings for a '68 RS? Are the front wheel moldingon an RS  in fact different than the regular trim cars?

Clarification on this would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks and again my apologies for re-hashing this old topic.

Restoration / Rear Quarter Panel
« on: January 14, 2011, 04:10:29 PM »
Sorry if this is a dumb question:

My 68 Convertible is at the body shop. I got a call from them (just now) asking if there should be a seam showing between the quarter panels (at the top) and front side of the trunk opening.
Asked a different way:  Is there a visible seam between the rear quarters and the panel just ahead of the trunk...the panel that sits between the front of the trunk opening and the opening for the convertible roof?

The seam was not showing in the car as I gave it to them...but there is some debate whether it should or not.

I would very much appreciate a quick response on this as I have to go see them with an answer this afternoon....thank you!!!

Originality / Heater box seal
« on: December 29, 2010, 05:04:02 PM »
Just preparing everything I need to put my '68 back together again.

According to the AIM, the inside heater box used the dash mat as the seal to the inside of the firewall. Also according to the AIM, the outside heater box cover used a sealing compound to the engine-side firewall.
I have seen gasket sets (available through the normal vendors) that  provide gasket seals for both these applications. Are these gasket sets correct? (Should I be using them?)
If sealer/caulking  is correct, what would be an appropriate sealer to use?  Black silicon...??? Body caulking? Could someone recommend a product please.
Thanks!!

Maintenance / Engine Problems
« on: December 28, 2010, 07:28:00 PM »
Sorry for such a long post....

I have a 68 with a 327 engine. Although it is not the engine that this car left the factory with, it is a Camaro engine (build date is Oct. 13, 1967)..my car appears to have been assembled in March of 1968.
When I purchased the car it had a Holley 457S style carb and an aluminum Holley intake (neither is correct..but functional).
I acquired the car in the early summer and ran it almost daily until September. It ran very well at first but after a week or two I noticed that it  started using oil and this became progressively worst. I did not see any oil leaks under the engine..I assumed it was burning it.
By the end of September the car was backfiring, losing power and even stalling. I pulled the plugs out and 6 out of 8 were so badly fouled that the end of the plug looked like one black mass of oil and soot. Attached  picture shows one of the better plugs.
I decided to have the engine rebuilt because it was (to me) obvious that the engine was burning  oil. Once the engine was apart we saw some wear on the rings but not enough to create the mess that we were seeing on the plugs..

When I was taking the engine apart, I noticed that the intake manifold bolts were barely finger tight. If I'm not mistaken these should have been torqued down to about 35 ft-lbs. or so.
If the intake was not bolted down properly, is it possible that it was taking in oil (and air) from the valley under the intake? Could this have been the cause of the oil burning?

Two other things I noticed.
1. The engine timing when I first got the car was ridiculously advanced....like 18 degrees. I brought it back down to about 6 degrees..
2. Unlike other V8s I have worked with, this car would not ping. ..no matter what the timing was set for. (I know pinging is a bad thing and should be avoided....BUT if the timing was far enough advanced this engine should ping. It didn't...I don't get it.

Could these two issues have anything to do with the oil burning?

Restoration / Brake Proportioning Valve (for 1968)
« on: December 27, 2010, 05:51:42 AM »
Under what conditions was the brake proprtioning valve (i.e. front to back line, under the driver side frame) used? Was it on all models with disc brakes?
The assembly manual implies that it was only used on 350s...AIM L48 A1 and A7. Why only the 350?

Let me ask this differently, should my 1968, with a 327, and disc brakes have a proportioning valve?

Originality / Correct Horns for a 68 RS
« on: December 23, 2010, 05:10:35 PM »
I'm really confused about the horns on my '68 RS.

First of all, the horns that came with my car don't look like the ones covered in the assembly manual. (They look more like the ones for a 69).
The assembly manuals has one diagram that shows the horns mounted next to the head light assembly...I assume that this is for Standard Grill cars.
Another Diagram  U03 A1 shows a number of horns.  Some in the center, some on the sides.....Very confusing.

My wiring harness has a black wire that allows the horns to be mounted in the center on the rad center support.

I purchased a set of   correct reporduction horns, but they both have short brackets (unlike mine).

Thouroghly confused. (Attached are pics of teh horns that camw with my car).

What is correct for my car...'68 RS (Convertible).

Does anyone have a picture of the correct set up?

Thanks!

Restoration / Question on Splash Sheild Clip for '68
« on: December 22, 2010, 07:07:55 PM »
Looking to source a clip for my '68. The clip is used to hold up an obscure section of fender splash shield on the left side. I found all kinds of splash shield kits ..but nothing for this clip..

You can see the clip on the first picture of this post..

http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=71611

You can also find it in the 68 Assembly manual, UPC 11-13 Sheet B1. The part number is called 3921872 Clip

Thanks for your help.

Restoration / Front Disc brake question
« on: December 22, 2010, 06:05:22 PM »
My '68 has 2 piece disc rottor and hub. I believe it to be original...maybe a replacement...but none the less, it is a two piece unit as the original had.

The car has sat for a very long time and as such, the wheel bearings have marked a line on the wheel bearing race. When you run your fingernail across the mark, you can feel a small indentation. I am assuming that this will wreck any new bearings I install.

Question: Are the wheel bearing race(s)  removable/replaceable on these hubs?  Or do I have to purchase a brand new 2 piece rottor?

I have not seen any of the more common suppliers advertise the race. Wheel bearings yes, races no.

Restoration / 68 Console Ammeter Wiring
« on: December 04, 2010, 03:59:03 AM »
The console ammeter has a connector with two wires:
a Black wire and a Black and White wire.
The ammeter terminal has one screw that is silver the other copper colored.

Which way does the connector go? Black wire to silver post and B/W to copper? or the other way?

The easy way to determine is to connect the battery and check to see if the needle is going in the right direction. But my car is apart and I would much rather not disassemble the console gages once it's together.

Does anyone have a picture of the wires/connectors at the gages of the console?

Thanks,

Vic

Restoration / 67 and 68 Grill rivets
« on: November 27, 2010, 06:37:39 PM »
I purchased a new grill kit for my 68 RS. It comes in three sections that have to be riveted together. An upper, middle and lower. The correct "flat" rivets came in the kit.

Question is what tool do I need to install these "flat-head" rivets? They are not the standard "pop" type rivets..which I have used before and have the tool for.
The "flat-head" rivets are apparently the correct ones...although the standard "pop" rivets will work.

Thanks for your help.

General Discussion / '68 Convertible Wedge Plates
« on: November 12, 2010, 04:28:59 AM »
Tried posting this but had some trouble. Hope it does not appear two or three time...

I purchased a set of Convertible Door Wedge Plates for my '68. They are meant for first Generation Camaros. I am embarresed to say that I do not know where they go.

My car was "restored" before and they probably filled in the holes.

Could someone with a convertible tell me where these wedge plates go and how they are installed.

Thanks in advance.

Restoration / Accelerator Pedal Height
« on: August 13, 2010, 02:43:09 AM »
The gas pedal on my 68 is set back a good 6 inches from the brake pedal. This makes it awkward to shift back and forward from the gas to brake...really awkward.

In my other cars (including ones of the same vintage as the  Camaro)  have a much smaller distance between the pedals...loser to about 2". Is it normal for the Camaro to have such a huge gap?

The brake pedal is adjusted correctly..otherwise I would have problems with the brake light switch ..and I don't. Is there an adjustment on the accelerator linkage that will allow me to pull the accelerator pedal forward?

Mine seems to be unusually close to the floorboard.

Please help ...this is making the driving uncomfortable.

BTW, I have an automatic with power disk brakes.
