Restoration / Any pictures of windshield mounting clips?
« on: June 14, 2010, 04:14:14 PM »
I am getting ready to install the windshield in my 68.  I forgot how the lower mounting clips are positioned and I can not find it in either the assembly manual or the fisher body manual.  Can anyone help me with a picture or a page number from the correct manual?  Also, some say the outer clips have to be installed before the fenders but I am told that is not necessary.  I can not even see the holes for the brackets.  Thanks in advance for your help.

Restoration / Window Glass
« on: March 01, 2010, 07:55:22 PM »
I will be getting my car out of the body shop in about a month or two and am looking for recommendations on window glass.  I have seen prices all over the place and not sure what to buy.  First of all, not sure if I really need to pony up to the date coded glass.  Just want something that fits well and looks good.  The body shop painting the car said that he has used Auto City glass before and had relatively few problems.  He said he thought he bought PPG from them but they said they dont sell ppg anymore because it is a lot thinner than original.  I see that they have ebay specials for 475 with free shipping which is cheaper than their regular price plus it has free shipping.  Any reason to stay away from them?  Any other suggesions?

Restoration / Location of spare tire hold down bracket on a 68
« on: February 19, 2010, 08:56:10 PM »
I had my trunk floor replaced and the body shop did not reinstall the spare tire hold down bracket.  He did not keep the old floor so I do not even know where it goes.  Can anyone help me with some measurements on where it goes so I can get it in the proper place?

Restoration / anyone have pics of the vacuum line routing for a 68 z/28?
« on: January 24, 2010, 04:40:23 PM »
I bought the vacuum line kit for my 302 and I can not figure out how all the parts fit together and I can not seem to find it in the assembly manual.  I have the long piece of hose and a short piece of hose, a metal line which I can tell fits into the carb and goes down to the intake.  there is also a metal fastener that I can not figure out how it goes.  Anyone have pics or can they tell me where to find it in the assembly manual?

Restoration / Lower alternator bracket question
« on: January 22, 2010, 05:50:45 PM »
I have a 68 z/28 and am using the stock exhaust manifolds.  I am using what I believe to be the correct lower alternator bracket.  I purchased it at the swap meet and was told that it was for 67-68.  The upper brackets are new repros from Heartbeat City.  The problem is that when I bolt the alternator in the lower bracket, it only will catch the outermost portion of the upper bracket.  Is it possible that I have the wrong lower bracket?  I know my alternator is not a numbers matching alternator.  Is there something special about the alternator?  Is the z/28 bracket something different all together?  Alternator hits valve cover before it can come into correct adjustment.  Any suggestions?

Restoration / Anyone have pics of the routing of the fuel lines for a 68?
« on: December 16, 2009, 05:46:36 PM »
I purchased stainless fuel line for my 68 from Classic Industries.  The lines was folded to fit in the shipping box.  I straightened it out but can not seem to get the bends right to get into the engine compartment.  It seems to fit well from mid door all the way back but I just can not figure out how it goes into the engine compartment and how the bends should be correct to transition from the rocker panel to the subframe.

Anyone have pictures or advice?

Restoration / Intake Manifold Question
« on: December 11, 2009, 07:32:26 PM »
I am installing the original factory aluminum intake on my 68 302 and my gasket kit gives me little metal restrictor plates for the center port and says to check your application to see if needed.  Can anyone tell me if I need to install them or just throw them away?

Restoration / Correct color and sheen for parts
« on: December 09, 2009, 04:36:54 PM »
Someone had sent me a link a while back that contained a chart or comparison of what parts should be painted what color.  I remember that it had 2 different judging groups and I know one of them was Jerry McNeish.  Can someone help me find this again?

Restoration / 68 Z front and rear springs
« on: December 07, 2009, 07:12:39 PM »
I finally got the frame and underside of the car painted and am ready to assemble.  I need to buy front and rear springs.  The car is a 68 Z and would have the 4 leaf springs in the back.  I am not sure I want to pony up to the $400 for a set of correct springs when I should be able to buy a good set of replacements for just under $200.  I do not plan to have the car judged or anything.  Can anyone give me advice on a good set of replacements to get a good ride height?  What about the fronts?  Any advice on them as well?  Where would be the best place to buy them?

Decoding/Numbers / Correct flywheel for a 68 Z
« on: November 11, 2009, 02:07:31 PM »
I need to purchase a flywheel for my 68Z.  Can anyone help me with a size and part number/casting number if there is one?  Is this the same as just about any small block chevy or is the Z something special?  Someone told me that the flywheel would even be the same as the one on a 6cyl motor.

Restoration / Paint Advice Needed
« on: November 11, 2009, 02:03:07 PM »
I am restoring my 68 Z and had new floor pans and trunk floor installed.  I am finishing the underside and will be painting shortly.  A friend suggested using Extreme Chassis Black paint from Eastwood company.  I had the car media blasted a few months ago and primed with 2 part epoxy primer and did my finish work on top of that.  Would it be in the correct direction to paint the underside of the car, the rear axle, springs, firewall, core support, subframe, inner fenders, and front suspension with the same satin paint?  I know the original would have had overspray underneath just as the firewall would have overspray from body color and cowl area would have overspray from the stripes being painted on the car.  I want to be correct.....but not "that correct" if that makes any sense.  Also, has anyone used the Eastwood product?  I know I will have to sand my primer now because it has passed its window, but do I need to reprime over it or can I spray paint over it?  Do I need to buy Eastwood's chassis paint kit with their primer or will any primer do?  Their standard kit comes with 2 quarts of Extreme Chassis Black paint and 1 quart of primer.  Is that enough for the job?  Any adivice would be helpful.

Restoration / Where can I find correct rosette VIN tag rivets?
« on: August 12, 2009, 05:43:23 PM »
I am restoring my 68Z and my dash was rusted out so I replaced it.  I now have to remove my VIN tag from my old dash and attach to the new dash.  Can anyone tell me the going rate for these correct rosette rivets and where I can find them?  I can not seem to find them on EBAY.

Originality / What are acceptable casting dates for block and heads?
« on: July 28, 2009, 03:43:11 PM »
My car is a 2nd week of July car.  I picked up a March 10 dated block and my heads are dated February 7 and February 21.  Would these heads be considered a matched pair or are they too far apart in dates for that?  Would be be considered correct for the block?  Would the motor be considered correct for the car with the age difference?

Originality / Help with 302 MO block repair
« on: July 13, 2009, 06:08:52 PM »
I have a 68 z28 and am working on the restoration now.  The original 302 is long gone but I recently purchased a correct MO block.  This has another vin number on it so it is not the actual block that came in my car.  The machine shop told me that they found hairline cracks across the deck from being overheated somewhere down the road.  They can fix it by welding it but they would have to deck the block to complete the repair.  If the block is decked, there would be no way to prove it was a correct MO block and therefore be no different than a 1968 327 or 350.  I have been told restamping would be an option but several viewers told me that was a bad idea.  What are your suggestions?

I am sure this is a needle in a haystack but I am looking for that original motor.  the last 6 digits of the car are 465803.  If I can not find the original block, I would like to find a replacement.  I purchased a motor for the car and just found out the block and crank are cracked.  I have everything from carb and intake to pan and almost all accessories.  I just need a block and crank.  can anyone point me in the right direction?
