General Discussion / 67 RS/SS "Numbers Matching on ebay...
« on: February 06, 2015, 01:37:47 AM »
Hello, was just trolling through the camaros on ebay, and saw this car claiming that it is "numbers matching"  The suffix on the engine stamp is "MY" which to my knowledge translates to a 67 or 68 396 (325 HP) with a TH trans.... Am I correct?  The vin is stamped on the block and matches the tag inside the vehicle... so, could it be that this was originally an automatic car instead of a Manual?  Or am I way off?  Thanks!

Originality / 68 BB AC brackets
« on: April 01, 2014, 03:39:49 PM »
Hello all,  while showing my car, I had a gentlemen come up and tell me that my top AC brackets were incorrect.  He stated that he had a 68 BB AC car that was "untouched", and that my "U" shaped bracket and compressor support bracket attached to the intake manifold was not correct for a 68 BB car (circled).  This surprised me a bit... went home and pulled out the AIM.  Unless I read the AIM incorrectly, it shows this setup as being correct for an L35 car.    He stated that the Camaro catalogs (he referenced Heartbeat City) shows this "U" shaped bracket is used for SB cars.  It's my belief that since the vendors he researched did not show the BB bracket he assumed I was using a SB set up.  I can't imagine that the SB and BB intake bolt spacing would be the same?   Can anyone validate that my bracket appears correct?  Thanks, Ed

Hey all, just wanted to post a few pics of my car.  Down to the wire, but managed to get it completed enough to get into the Autorama in Utah.  Ended up with a 2nd place finish in my class (68-72 restored)... a few little things to take care of if I show it again...   Thanks for looking! Ed

Originality / '68 D91 stripe vs 396 Emblems
« on: February 14, 2014, 04:18:41 PM »
I've got my car down to the paint shop today to paint the D91 Bumblebee stripe. It's been quite a few years since I saw the original placement of the stripe with the emblems on as the car was stripped to bare metal 20+ years ago.  I purchased replacement "396" emblems, and two sets of Paint stencils (one recently due to being afraid that the glue backing on the older one had gone bad).  Both 396 emblems have the same pin placements on them.  I do not believe that there is a RH or LH emblem... but if anyone knows different, please let me know...  After looking at dozens of photos I'm confident that the stripe stencils are placed accuratley on the car, as referenced by the AIM measurements... the problem I have, is that the emblems are not centered horizonally within the stripe.... Is this how they are supposed to be? Or should they be centered?  My questions rolled up are:
1. Is the 396 emblem supposed to be centered horizonally and vertically in the stripe?
2. Anyone aware of a LH/RH 396 emblem which would place the emblem in the centered position on both sides?
3. Does any anyone have a "survivor" photo of this configuration?

Thanks a bunch!  Ed

Maintenance / 68 Fuel Gauge
« on: February 11, 2014, 09:59:51 PM »
Troubleshooting a '68 Fuel Gauge... the needle remains stationary at the 3:00 position regardless if battery is connected, switch on or off... suspect that the gauge itself is bad given this scenario.  Anyone agree/disagree?   I would guess that if another issue (sending unit) it would at least move, and be somewhere in the full to empty range?    Thanks in advance for your comments/suggestions.  Ed

Originality / RPO PA2 Mag-style cover
« on: January 30, 2014, 02:34:10 AM »
According to the RPO option sheet, RPO PA2 "Mag-style cover" is type "B" available in 68 and 69.  Since this was a type b, can it be assumed that it was not available  for early 68 cars (Oct 67 build)?  The N96 option is the type "A"....

Decoding/Numbers / RPO HO1 Option ('68)?
« on: January 28, 2014, 08:03:19 PM »
Hello, been through several threads on this, and am still not clear as to the rarity of the 3:07 gear ratio for '68 cars. My POP indicates "PP1011G" in positions B15-21.  I interpret the PP as a 12 bolt limited slip with 3:07 gears.  Is this RPO "H01"?  If so, according to the RPO datasheet, only 556 were made in '68.  I've seen comments that this was a common rear end/gear ratio for SS cars which contradicts my assessment....
Any clarification is greatly appreciated! Thanks, Ed

Maintenance / 68 th400 fluid capacity with dry torque converter
« on: January 23, 2014, 04:13:56 PM »
Hello, trying to find the correct TH400 fluid capacity with a dry torque converter.  I've seen everything from 10 to 15 qts...  Have not fired the motor up yet, so cannot check the level via the dipstick. I put  15 qts in the tranny, and it has a slow leak coming from the front shaft.  New seals were installed on the trans. So I'm suspecting (hoping) that either it's overfilled, or the fluid has not yet made it into the torque converter, resulting in the fluid being above the shaft (hence the slow oozing of the fluid from the front seal).   Anyone have a definitive answer on the quantity that it should have?  Thanks! Ed

Originality / 68 ivy gold sail panels
« on: January 22, 2014, 10:35:17 PM »
I replaced my headliner 10+ years ago, and stuck with the original sail panels as they were in great shape. They have since deteriated and wanted to replace them...  The old panel color matched perfectly with the replacement headliner.  I just ordered and recieved a set of PUI replacements, and the color is WAY off (much lighter green/gold).  Anyone know of a vendor that may have panels available with the correct (original) Ivy Gold color? Unfortunatley I do not remember who I got the headliner from.... (my bad.... should have replaced the panels at the same time).  Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks, Ed

Originality / Negative battery cable location on 68 BB with AC
« on: November 24, 2009, 07:32:41 PM »
Hello,  Can anyone tell me where the ground connections should be for the negative cable on a 68 396 car with AC?  I could not find it in the AIM, but maybe I've just overlooked it?    Thanks in advance for your help!

Restoration / 68 SS 396 driveshaft restoration
« on: April 24, 2009, 06:36:15 PM »
Hi fellas, need some advice on how to restore my driveshaft to a factory"correct"  look.  Did it come bare metal with the colored bands painted on? Or was it painted, then the bands applied?  Have seen them done both ways.... Also, does anyone have any specs on the colored bands?   Thanks, Ed
