Decoding/Numbers / F-Code...not X-Code
« on: December 07, 2009, 09:19:50 AM »
There's not much info in the books about the LOS and VN cowl tags.

Here's a different code on the Cowl Tag.  Instead of an X-Code it's an F-Code...  :)  It appears to be a Fisher Body plant assembly number that is typically located above the "BODY" in the upper right hand corner on the '68 tag.  I've also seen a D096 stamped in this area on a '69 VN cowl tag.  It appears to be a LOS and VN deal not talked about.

Restoration / Black 67 with red nose stripe?
« on: September 08, 2009, 07:15:51 PM »
Is it possible to have a black '67 Camaro with red interior, red pinstripes, and red nose stripes?

Can this color combo be original?

Thanks,

Decoding/Numbers / Is there a stamp somewhere on the subframe...?
« on: May 23, 2009, 01:49:16 AM »
Hey guys,

Is there a date stamp somewhere on the subframe so I can find a date of build?  I have a strange 67 subframe on my 68. It has the round access hole for the late 67 on the passenger side and an early 67 frame rail plate on the drivers side without the access hole.  If I could find some sort of stamp on the frame, it might help pin-point when they changed over...since my frame must have been made right on the cusp of the change.

Here's your picture of the holes I'm refering to.

Decoding/Numbers / Strange Stamp on Firewall...
« on: May 21, 2009, 07:52:37 PM »
Hey Guys,

What is the strange stamp on the firewall below the hidden VIN under the heater ducting?  These numbers are VERY hard to read.  They are upsidedown just like the hidden VIN.
These are the two numbers I've found in two cars.  "R   L48" and "R  XorZ23"

The 68 that has the R L48 is an original SS and the L48 is an SS RPO.

The 68 that has the R XorZ23 is a Deluxe Interior car...if it is Z23...that's also an RPO.

Are these just coincidences that they may relate to RPO's of the cars they are stamped on?

Restoration / Interior Door Panels

Who makes the best quality reproduction interior door panels?  Standard and Custom.  Does anyone make them complete...with the upper window felt strips stapled...instead of riveted?

General Discussion / SS/RS/Z28 with crossram?
« on: March 31, 2009, 01:39:09 AM »
Could you get a SS/RS/Z28 Camaro with a crossram and a 4-speed?  67, 68, or 69?  Or are these just phantom cars?  Or could you special order one?

Doesn't the SS ONLY come with a 350?  Meaning that you could get an RS Z28 with a crossram with a 4-speed?

Thanks,

Is there a right way and a wrong way to designate SS/RS or RS/SS?

Trying to keep with the "standard",

General Discussion / ZL1 Production Numbers?
« on: March 30, 2009, 11:59:26 PM »
Before you point me to the page that everyone has read:
http://www.camaros.org/geninfo.shtml#COPO

Why do the ZL1 production numbers (90) and crate engines (17) have a tilde (~) in front of each (~90) and (~17)?  That seems odd.  Does this mean that these numbers have been questioned in the past and that at least one historian "in the know" remembers a different number?  It not only seems odd that Chevrolet didn't produce more that ended up in R&D and other racing programs.  Wait!  What am I saying?  Chevrolet wasn't racing.

In Paul Van Valkenburgh's book,"Chevrolet ---Racing?" he refers to aluminum big block 427's in racing.  He states, "Penske immediately picked up a half-dozen which were shipped to Traco, McLaren bought a bunch, and the 1968 Can-Am season was off to become a relatively competitive series." He also states, "The production aluminum-block 427 Chevrolet engine saw finally made available to the general public. Most were sold across the counter at around $2000 for the short block, but some were built in Corvettes and Camaros."

Is the ZL1 that we say only (~90) were produced, is that only complete engines? I take that as meaning there were A LOT more of these blocks produced, but only (~90) were complete engines. Any insight?

General Discussion / Dual Exhausted?
« on: March 30, 2009, 09:09:57 PM »
Hey guys,

So in a previous thread, you answered my question about the welded reinforcement plate welded to the side of the drivers side rear frame rail on 69's, by pointing me to:
http://www.camaros.org/diffs69.shtml

Without that reinforcement plate, a 69 Camaro could definitely NOT be an RS, SS, or Z28.

Does the same thing go for the 67 and 68 Camaros?  If they didn't have Riv-nuts in the rear frame rail...they are definitely NOT an RS, SS, or Z28?

Thanks,

General Discussion / F&SO or COPO
« on: March 26, 2009, 06:16:04 AM »
Hey guys,

Is there a page or a section on CRG that I'm not seeing that explains more about Fleet and Special Order's (F&SO)?  Is it somewhere and I'm just blind? :)  I've seen F&SO on the Broadcast sheet where it reads "F&SO Or COPO No." and I've read that special order paint does not make your Camaro a COPO car...since there wasn't any engineering involved in changing paint color.

What else do we really know about Fleet and Special Order's?  What other things have been documented as Fleet and Special Order's?  Were there any first gen Police cars ever built?  If so, would those be fleet?  Would a Special Order simply cover adding a HD radiator or a folding rear seat to a plain jane L6 powered Camaro?

Thanks,

General Discussion / Special Order Paint -Playboy Pink
« on: March 22, 2009, 11:21:23 PM »
Hey guys,

What was the process for special order paint?

I've read this article:
http://www.camaros.org/assemblyprocess.shtml

But, it doesn't cover how special order paint was processed.  My friend has a Playboy Pink 68 Camaro that was definitely painted at the factory.  How were these special order cars processed, since the shells were painted separately from the front sheetmetal.  Were special order paint cars painted using the same process as the other 19 standard colors?  Special order paint didn't make the car a COPO right?

Were special order paint cars ---painted at certain times of the month?  Were they all saved up over a few weeks and painted together?  Were they all special order paint cars painted in batches...like a bunch of Playboy Pink Camaros were painted with special order paint cars, and then they would switch back to standard colors so the line wouldn't get messed up?

The side story to the color.
Supposedly...Playboy ordered 50, but only took delivery of about 35.  The left over pink 68 Camaros were auctioned or distributed to dealerships.  One was sent to Courtesy Chevrolet in San Jose, CA.  It sat on the lot until July of 1969, when my friends' Grandparents purchased it.  Other than the color, this is a very basic 327/PG car with hubcaps and std interior.  And, yes I know that the Playmate of the year in 1968 (Angela Dorian) received a Playboy Pink 1968 AMX.  Who knows why she didn't get a Camaro if they ordered pink Camaros?
