General Discussion / The PatriotDream.org 68 Camaro project
« on: August 08, 2007, 01:39:13 AM »
For those of you interested, I figured I's just start a fresh post instead of digging for an old jumbled up one.

We're building a 68 Camaro for my brother-in-law who is currently in Iraq. We recieved a bunch of donations and purchased a car. We've also received a ton of parts from various individuals and businesses and are on our way to building a hell of a car. If you are interested in following the project, please visit our website at http://www.patriotdream.org and follow along or find out how you can help!

So the project is to turn this:

Into this:

Before Shawn gets home in July of 08!

OK, here's what we're gonna do with the Camaro we're building for Shawn.

We talked with his dad and found out the car was a 67 Camaro with a 327 and a 4-spd. It was red with some 80's fab black stripes. Shawn knows the difference between a 67-68 and a 69, so we're definitely going with a 67-68 now. I'd prefer a 68 because I like that it has side markers and no vent windows.

So we're gonna build a 68 Camaro, red, with some form of factory Camaro stripe in white. RS hidden headlights, factory spoilers. (some exterior trim and rust-proofing paint thanks to POR-15)

Black interior (seat covers thanks to TA Specialties)

Late model 327 (Gen III 5.3L) donated by Strictly Performance, built by Handcrafted Racing, and wiring and computer by Painless Performance. Show cover thanks to Undercover Innovations.

6-spd transmission, pedal covers thanks to Modo Innovations

Coilover shocks, tubular a-arms, SFCs, (some suspension thanks to G-Machine Racing) and a killer stereo system.

The wheels we have not decided on yet, but I'm thinking a good 17" with a retro vibe. Something good and tasteful.

What my goal is is a good looking, stock appearing car that will be fast and reliable and handle what he wants to throw at it.

Our immediate needs (other than a 68 Camaro!) are an LS1/LS1/5.3L intake, fuel rails, injectors, valve covers, coil packs, plug wires, timing chain, and any thing else like accessory brackets and such. We have the shortblock and heads, but we need everything else to make it work in the car. Condition does not matter, as long as it isn't broken. I am planning on powdercoating everything anyway.

We also need a 6-spd, swap parts, and pretty much anything you might have or think we need.

Thank you all SO MUCH for helping this become a reality. People have graciously donated a lot of money, and a TON of parts and it makes me so happy to see you guys help out to show a deserving serviceman how much you appreciate what he does for every one of us. 8)

General Discussion / Should I pass on this car?
« on: June 07, 2007, 03:30:00 AM »
From the seller:
"car needs rear shock towers repaired..they are rusty on one side, and completely
gone on the other..floors will need done behind the rear seat where the
shock tower is..drivers side rocker was replaced probably when the other
metal work was done and needs replaced again."

The car looks great, but obviosuly needs a little work. I can get the car pretty cheap, around $4k. The interior looks nice and the body looks pretty straight. I've worked on a few Mustangs where you parted them out when the shock towers were rusted, so I'm not sure how to go with this one.

We have a guy who is donating the welding work, but if it is a ton of work then I think I'll pass.

General Discussion / Building a 69 Camaro for my bro-in-law in Iraq
« on: June 06, 2007, 03:00:31 PM »
Just thought I'd stop in here since I've heard this is a great place for 1st gen Camaros. I am currently working on building a 69 Camaro for my brother-in-law who is currently deployed to Baghdad, Iraq.

We have gotten donations and parts from people and businesses all over the country, it is really coming together as a cool project to support an American Serviceman. We are currently trying to find the car, but since it is donation based, we are having a heck of a time. A 69 would be ideal, but a 67 or 68 will do as well. The condition does not really matter because the body work and paint have been donated, as well as a lot of the other parts. We've got a few lines on some cars, but they are always out of our price range.

The car will have a late-model 5.3L donated by Strictly Performance and built by Handcrafted Racing, backed by a 4L60E donated by me and a wiring harness donated by Painless.

Interior will be mostly stock with a rollcage donated by G-Machines Racing and replacement parts donated by POR-15, NPD, and TA Specialties.

It will be an amazing car, provided we can find one. If you know of anyone that might have one, or might be willing to help with the project, or even might want to donate some spare change to the project, please let me know.

The project website is PatriotDream.org and we will be updating it as parts arrive, donations come in, and hopefully a car is found.

So I'll be hanging around here a lot. I'm a Trans Am guy, Camaros are a new beast to me!
