Originality / Guide to cocktail shakers
« on: October 29, 2008, 06:34:23 PM »
I would sure love to see a report or visual guide to cocktail shakers or vibration dampeners for the convertible Camaros (and Firebirds to keep them all straight).
I have seen round ones and square ones and have heard about fronts with short legs and fronts with longer legs and that the 69 shakers are not compatible with 67 or 68 and that Firebird shakers are not compatible with Camaros.
What is the truth and when did the changes occur? Does anyone know beyond speculation? Anyone have photos? Did all 68s use the same type of shakers? ???
Thanks!

General Discussion / Need to replace the rocker panel on my convertible
« on: December 27, 2007, 05:53:06 PM »
I need to replace the driver's side rocker panel on my 67 ragtop. Should I build a jig or car dolly to mount the body on first? Does any one have any specs or plans for those? I also need to do the floor pans but I will do the rocker first I guess.

General Discussion / What are these wierd holes in my 67 dash?
« on: December 14, 2007, 06:48:50 PM »
Does anyone know what these holes are for on the dash of my 67 convertible? Are they probably aftermarket holes? My options from the trim tag are: WD\2SR\3SK\4F\5BY. The exterior color is Tuxedo black and interior is bright blue.
Thanks!

General Discussion / Should I drive my classic Camaro as a daily driver?
« on: December 05, 2007, 03:25:29 PM »
Should I drive my classic Camaro as a daily driver?
It is my goal when I get my Camaro convertible restored, to drive it as a daily driver. Is this realistic?
My concerns would be:
theft of car
theft of parts
Car crash
vandalism
personal safety (no air bags and such)
What do you think on this?
Should it just be a weekend car only?

Restoration / I want to build a rotissere for my car
« on: October 17, 2007, 12:51:10 PM »
Does anyone have any plans or drawings on how to build a budget rotissere set up for restoration. I was thinking of using two engine stands and securing them together with a bar at the bottom. Would this work?

General Discussion / Buying a Camaro accross the country...
« on: October 17, 2007, 12:36:38 PM »
Hey guys,
I'm buying a 68 camaro convertible from accross the country and sending a shipping company to pick it up. how do I protect myself from getting ripped off? I'm not so much worried about him misrepresenting the vehicle as we have talked extensively about the condition. My real worry is that I send him the money and maybe he doesn't really have the car. What is the best way to go about this?

Restoration / Help! I don't know how to weld!
« on: October 04, 2007, 04:26:49 PM »
I am about to get a new 68 convertible project and I will have to install new panels on her. I have never welded before but I'm sure I could pick it up. I am very handy and I can learn quickly. What is a good starting point on beginning welding? A good welding book? some practice sheet metal? What kind of welder do I need? Tig? Mig? whats the difference? Is it better to practice on doing the floor pans and let the professionals tackle the exterior pieces? Any help is greatly appreciated.

General Discussion / originality or no rust, which is more important?
« on: June 06, 2007, 01:42:03 PM »
When admiring or buying a first generation Camaro, which is more important; originality of the car (matching numbers, paperwork, factory options still in place, oldmarkings and stickers) or the condition of the vehicle(body work done, new seats, upgraded rearend, new engine).
Just curious. I personally enjoy an original car with matching numbers and such. Just curious about opinions....

General Discussion / I saw grandpa in his 69 Camaro yesterday
« on: May 18, 2007, 04:56:37 PM »
i saw a grandpa lookin dude in his 69 Camaro driving down the road yesterday. He was probably the original owner. She was a plain jane (six banger no doubt) unless all the emblems with engine designation had fallen off. The car was faded out gold or bronze or something. Every square inch of that car was dented, the right side door was caved in from an auto wreck, and the grill was busted out. I couldn't take my eyes off of that beautiful car...

I live in a town that once had a Camaro graveyard/salvage yard. The guy that owned it loved first gen Camaros and was really nice. He died in an accident a few years ago and his brother, who I went to high school with, took over the buisiness and made it a Camaro and Mustang salvage yard. This guy is not the sharpest fellow around and is not a Camaro fan that I know of. Anyway the buisiness quickly failed and since I got back to town no one is running the place and the phone has been disconnected. (I heard something about family bickering and or a drug alcohol problem??) I'm wondering if there are any first Gen Camaros left in there. If so are there any worth restoring? Could there be any valuable or rare parts in there? The whole area is fenced up and I'm so tempted to hop the fence one day and see what is in there. I have not been in there in 20 years and there could be nothing but crap but then again, this is a smaller southern town and not many knowledgeable Camaro people around  (I could be wrong but I doubt it) I think the place has been closed for about 5 years or so. Should I hop the fence for a look see? I could try to contact the last owner but he is not trustworthy and not a nice guy either, and I would probably not get anywhere.....

Eventually using oil to power our homes and cars will be a thing of the past. With global warming debates heating up (pun intended) and a democrat headed for the White House its only a matter of time until oil compaines lose their power and grip on our country. When this happens gasoline will be rare and expensive. Sooner or later we will have to convert our babies (Camaros) to electricity. Who will make the first electric engine to drop into a first gen Camaro? When will the market demand these conversions? When will our Camaros be immobile gasoline relics from the past?

I wonder, using the new Dynacorn 69 Camaro bodies how much it would actually cost to do a complete buidup using all new parts? What parts are not available and would come from a donor car? Personally I think 12 thousand dollars for the body is a little steep. It seems you could get an original rolling chassis with a front end, rearend and most bodywork already done for that price. I have seen buildups in the car magazines but no one ever says how much they spent doing it. Also is this new availability of camaro bodies going to cause people to start stealing Cowl tags and selling them?

I wonder now in this age of skyrocketing prices for muscle cars, if the desirable Camaros are only for the rich. When my Camaro obsession began back in 1985, one could snatch up a Camaro at any price point it seemed. I found my first 68 SS396 for 3500 bucks in the late eighties and it was a running car. Correct me if I'm wrong but back then if you drove around in an old Camaro then, you were "lower class" or a "redneck" or a "gearhead" or whatever. Now it seems you must be wealthy to own or drive an original RS/SS camaro and if you are a convertible freak like me, well then forget it! Unless you are ready to lay down 20 to 30 grand! If I wanted to drive the car i wanted, an original 1969 RS/SS convertible, I would have to come up with 40 thousand dollars! I think this contributes to the birth of so many clones. To make matters worse when I get another 1st gen Camaro, it can't possibly be a daily driver. My 68 RS convertible a couple of years ago, got so much attention any time i drove it, I was scared to leave it unattended for longer than 10  minutes! So it seems this very expensive car can only be a weekend toy. Who can afford such an expensive hobby in the real world? Even an educated guy like me with a good job has to play the wating game and hope to be able to afford to get another 1st gen one day.....
