Restoration / Aluminum Polishing: first try
« on: April 08, 2011, 12:21:15 AM »
So I found these old M/T valve covers I wanted to use on my car.... pretty rough shape if you look at the link.

Anyway I'm not much for finesse so just grabbed a 1/4 sheet sander and started with #60 all the way to #400 oxide paper, red compound, white compound and then aluminum polish. Lots of deep scratches left and could have spent way more time with detail compounding but just went for the gusto!

Restoration / Intake paint procedure
« on: April 07, 2011, 11:45:24 PM »
Hey there... putting away a few parts and just wanted to be sure before I clean them up and  stored them:

Was the carburetor and distributor on the engine when it was painted orange?   L48 1969 or just the distributor?

The lift hooks were on, the dipstick was not, the water outlet was on, the exhaust manifolds were on, water pump and no pulley's?   How about the fuel pump?

thanks guys.... I read the engine assy. process and saw pics from the 67 line but wasn't too sure if anything had changed.

Decoding/Numbers / X11 S /RS question
« on: April 04, 2011, 02:40:06 PM »
I was visiting a friend's brother yesterday. He was storing a 69 Camaro for another friend. I wish I had brought a camera.

It was a Fathom Green Big block car, very restored looking, nice.

OK I noticed that it had SuperSport wheels D90 Hockey stripe,  so assumed at first it was an early build car.  No glasses with me and kinda dark but trim pad noted:  X11 and I could make out the date of 06A
The car was Rally Sport equipped, no squirters on the headlights, and the wiper motor was not the kind I see with the solenoid for the squirters. Car had a cowl hood, and heater core was for a big block.  Then I noticed the Holly and incorrect intake. Tail panel painted black.  12437N ... other stuff... repop console gauges, am radio, fm antenna... usual easy stuff.

Anyway they told my buddy that it was a 'correct restoration' so I didn't say much other than ... mmmmm nice!

The cowl tag bugged me a bit.... the upper edge was really sharp fold back to the cowl, and very smooth.... OTOH the numbers were very flat and difficult to read. The rivets looked ok with my poor eyes.

My question... so the wheels would be early for the car, which is fine, as I liked them, but the X11 code with the big block RS is that OK?

General Discussion / My 69 not that much fun anymore
« on: April 02, 2011, 10:50:32 PM »
 I need to share.

After working for a number of years to make my 69 'correct', I'm really feeling kinda blue. I lost my heated garage three years back so it's been kinda hard just keeping up with the 'preservation' of the car much less pushing it to the next level. Late last fall I removed the intake and exhaust manifolds with the intention of repainting and having the manifolds ceramic coated. The rust was killing me. Found the correct dated master and had it rebuilt, same with the booster. Cast ceramic done.

Now I'm rethinking where I'm going with the car.  Other than the Judged events like ACA and the like, the average guy could care two cents. I open the hood and they look and say 'oh' and they're off. I really really enjoy talking to knowledgeable Camaro fans, but they are few and far between.  Most conversations revolve around ' oh I always wanted a Pace Car or whatever'.
The trip to Carlisle is a major endeavor, and now that ACA has moved, I'm not much in the mood to push the extra miles with the trailer and the gas$$$.

So other than a few hundred people on the planet who really cares that its a 'born with drive-train'.... its not a L78, oh just a 350. Oh I see you have the correct brake lines, nice.

Tired of driving around on date correct wheels that hop at 70 mph, on 'correct Goodyear bias/belted tires'. Tired of another 'misfire' from my crappy 'date correct' wires.  And so on and on.

It's just not that much fun worrying about the dust on the road, gravel, rainstorms, etc.

Selling it is not an option. Prices are soft, and I spent bucks knowing that the only person who benefits from restored is the buyer. So I want to keep it but just think right now I'm going to 're-think' the car.

Taking it up to the next level..... Vintage Elite or Legends would require even more effort. Would need to repaint (I have base clear) dated glass and a 'Gardner exhaust'. And then what... more bucks and never take the car outside again? Hell as it is the car feels like a Museum piece.

So..... here is what I'm thinking.  If I had have owned this car, back in the 70's when I was a young man, what would I have done to make it 'mine'???  I certainly would not have left it just as it was delivered from the factory. I think I would have put headers on it, decent looking valve covers, some chrome under the hood, nice wheels and tires... and driven it like I stole it.

My rant, sorry must have been the long long winter

Decoding/Numbers / Help with chrome tail pipes
« on: March 20, 2011, 12:05:19 AM »
Hey guys... cleaning out the garage as I am moving soon... cataloging a bunch of parts as I put them in bins etc.

I bought these a number of years back and was told they were for a 69. Then I realized 69 only had a partial chrome tip so figured, I'd purchased some scrap metal....

Anyway I don't have access to too many parts books and wondering if anyone had see anything like these???  Any guesses will be fine.  part # 8201337 see link

Decoding/Numbers / Acid wash reveals vin on engine block
« on: March 06, 2011, 02:47:44 PM »
Hey all.... when I purchased my 69, the previous owner told me there was no vin on the block.  A couple of years ago I spent some time with some Muriatic acid and washed the rough casting beside the oil filter...

The Vin showed up and I got several photo's before it 'disappeared' again....   the vin plate is for comparison you can make out most numbers..

I sent him a note and told him that concourse implies that the car is restored to original and correct standards.... he wants to know what is wrong with the car. I can count a number of items...

Restoration / Park lamp bulb
« on: November 29, 2010, 04:18:46 PM »
Did a search, and surprised this never came up before. Did the 69 front park lamps have the solid painted 1157A bulb, or were they the later style NA (natural amber) clear amber colored?
I've seen the solid bulbs on ebay and they get quite pricey, NCRS kind of stuff. Have never seen a picture of the front lens assy. that is clear enough to tell me what cam originally.
thanks for any thought guys

Decoding/Numbers / Found: partial Vin on my block
« on: January 25, 2008, 01:41:17 AM »
Hi guys... thought I would share this.   Previous owner and engine rebuilder told me they could not find the partial vin by the rough cast area.

I couldn't see it either as the engine is in the car.  After paint removal I began by soaking the area with muriatic acid.  Took a lot of digital photos and finally I was able to figure out where it was.  My son has better eyes than me and helped me figure it out. Shows up better without the flash and some indirect lighting.  Matches my vin  ;D

Restoration / Where to buy "correct appearing" ball joints?
« on: December 29, 2007, 11:29:32 PM »
Hello there.. 69 camaro

been looking at a lot of suppliers that say "OEM" but I am sure a few of you may know.  I thought the ones from 'Ricks' looked ok also the lowers from Heartbeat City.

Anyone post a pic of a correct pair or steer me in the right direction?

Happy New Year

I've seen Q-Jets held down by a nut on stud on the rear.  I also remember seeing individual bolts, not stud/nuts, on the rear two fasteners.

Anyone know if the studs/nuts were earlier or later and or when the carb was held down by bolts only?

regards and thanks for piping in...

Originality / 69 350 Fender Emblem confused
« on: December 14, 2007, 11:27:35 PM »
Ok so I've seen the 350 Emblems for the front fenders...

One part number that shows fits both sides and is not marked right or left... the part number is 3953627

another showed 3962549 !

But I have also gotten my hands on a 350 emblem that is clearly marked for RH or LH and is curved differently to fit the fender better when used on the correct side..
the part number I do not know but it doesn't look much different.

The casting on that part is :  3938670 RH

Anyone know if the RH and LH are the most original?

Originality / The "Coil bracket Quiz"... Finally here
« on: December 08, 2007, 06:27:57 PM »
OK so I'm bored...   SS 350 with cowl induction

#1 Was on the car when I got it... black paint under silver.  Coil hit the back of the air cleaner.

#2 I purchased from a "specialty shop"... promised as a "correct" cowl coil bracket.  Note the oval slot on the right.  Had to hack it out to make it wide enough to fit.
     Still rubbed the air cleaner

#3 This one I got for free with a #293 coil I bought just as "backup".  It has a slotted but curved mounting hole on the right side.  More importantly, and hard to see is a
~1 1/2" notch cut out on the right side of the bracket.  It also tilts so much that it can not sit straight on a flat surface.  Has the greatest degree of tilt.  There was NO
Plating left on it so I just shot some silver paint on it.  The part number I got from Jerry's book but can not confirm it from another picture

#4  One of these recently sold in a box on ebay with the part number I noted.  It was described as a "correct cowl coil bracket" but I do  not believe this to be true.
Seems to be very similar in angle to #1 and #2 although it is a bit shorter in height than #1  I think this part number would be for V8's without Cowl induction.

OK so any comments would be fun to see...

Originality / Correct exhaust pipe to manifold nuts
« on: December 08, 2007, 05:59:04 PM »
I have seen a few "correct" nuts.  I have tried to Xreference the original part  number of the nut (it is the same for L6 and all V-8's) and is 3829086 which at AMK turns up an ordinary grade 5 3/8-16 nut.

The locking versions I've thought were correct are in these pics, my prejudiced preference is for the ordinary nut style in the first pic.

Thanks for comment please
