General Discussion / Clutch fAan vibration
« on: October 24, 2010, 06:49:14 PM »
Hello-

I have a 69 Camaro RS factory AC car with a 7 blade 18" fan.  I restored the car then removed the numbers matching engine and currently have a 383 with the previously mention fan and clutch fan.  Since teh 3783 was in I purchased a new clutch fan but used my existing 7 balde fan.  The clutch fan wore out fast creating a vibration in specific RPM ranges.  I replaced the clutch fan with a new one using the same blade.  Now the new one has worn out and started to vibrate again.I removed the clutch fan and blade and vibration is gone.  My question is could my original 1969 7 blade 18" fan be out of balance causing the clutch fans to fail or have I had a string of bad luck with the 2 new clutch fans?  The clutch fan part # is 27071397 and I believe it came from Car Quest.

If replacement is necessary for both what would you run for a blade and clutch fan? Is there a better brand?

Thanks

Maintenance / Blower Fan to Heater Core...
« on: October 10, 2009, 10:21:06 PM »
I have been enjoying my Camaro, running good and getting it debugged before the seasonal Oregon monsoon starts (Tuesday)!  Before my 2009 chassis resto, remember this car was sitting since 92.  It was a bit chilly last week one morning so I turned on the blower fan and it made about 3 revolutions and said "see-ya".  So I thought, no big deal, I will stick a new one in.  2 days later...  What a job!  You have to remove the fender, in order to do that you have to remove the grill, in order to do that you have to remove the bumper.  Keep in mind this a an AC car.  When I finally arrived at the blower fan, I thought I would be a complete moron if at this point I dont go a little farther and do the heater core.  Did that, of course all the felt on the ducting was shot years ago.  Changed that, cables looked great, original heater core was seeping, anyway I did it all and took my time going back together.  Changed that one lower 5/8" heater hose while it was easy.  Vacuumed everything out good as well.  On the assembly side I installed new bushings in the RS headlights and arms, fixed a few broken bolts I found on the way, new headlights, etc.

Heater works great now but I have a new arsenal of questions:

My car has the fan speed selector that moves horizontal.  Starting from the left is off, low, medium, high, then off again?  Is the fan a 3 speed with an off or a 4 speed and I have no "high"?

Since its resurection I have had this weird noise that got worse as I sped up.  Disconnnected the speedo and that was it.  Can these be rebuilt, sent out, or what are the options?

Now that my headlights have all new bushings they need a little adjusting as niether side fully closes now.  Any idea where you adjust the range of motion?

Side Note.  I had a weird vibration at 1200 rpms, before or after that is was smooth.  Defective clutch fan was the culprit.

I need new door glass weatherstripping, the one on the car that the door glass is supposed to seal against when doors are closed.  Who is the best source and any tip/tricks on replacing them?

Thanks,

Damon

General Discussion / Engine Mounting
« on: September 22, 2009, 04:24:58 PM »
Hello-

My car is a 69 Camaro RS and I currently have a 383 SBC with a 700R trans.  The MSD distributer cap is probably a 1/8" from the firewall.  The cap is a std GM cap.

A friend of mine is currently building a 69 Camaro Z28 clone.  His subframe is in with his 302 and 4 speed.  No front clip yet.  Stopped by and looked it over this morning and he has about 1.5" of clearance between his distributer and firewall.  We parked my car in front of his car and kept looking back and fourth, all looks to be the same (engine mounts, position, etc). We could not figure it out.

Side Note.  When finishing my car the new driveshaft was about 1" to long so we had it shortend to fit.  Now I am thinking the driveshaft was correct and somehow my engine is sitting to far back.  Any ideas, refferences, what to measure, etc?

Thanks,

General Discussion / Blow By

Drove the Camaro this weekend and smelled oil burning.  Turns out the drivers side valve cover breather is leaking oil on the header and in the slots on the top of the valve cover.  I removed the breather to see if this valve cover had any type of a baffle, it does not.  So do you know if I have the wrong breather or does someone offer a baffle for these valve covers?

Thanks,

Maintenance / Rear Brakes will not bleed
« on: August 21, 2009, 02:57:49 AM »
Hello again...

69 Camaro front disc rear drum.  New everything. I am starting with the rear pass drum and cannot get anything.  Tried the drivers side, nothing.  Tried the fronts, bleed out perfect.  Removed the distibution valve under the master and replaced with original, no difference.  Bench bleed master prior to install.  After all this I made a short brake line with a rubber hose and ran it from the brake master (rear) outlet and submerged the other end in a jar of brake fluid, first 12 pumps had lots of air, after that no air but the jar of fluid would not fill up, just raise and drop with each pedal stroke.  What I am missing or doing wrong?

Thanks,

Damon

Maintenance / Fuel Pump Rod
« on: August 17, 2009, 01:12:54 AM »
So tonight I decided to set my Holley floats when all of a sudden the Camaro would no longer run (again), no fuel.  This is my 2nd new Holley (manual) fuel pump...  So I removed the pump, diassembled, and found the end of the pot metal arm that fastens to the plunger was broken again.  I removed the fuel pump mounting plate thinking my rod is to long, and now I believe it is.  It measures 5 15/16" long end to end and is a Comp Cams #4620.  In reviewing the Comp Cams website this part number is for an Oldmobile Rocket Block.  Anyone know for sure how long the stock SBC fuel pump rod should be?

Thanks,

Damon

Maintenance / Generator Dash Light
« on: August 09, 2009, 03:15:38 PM »
My generator dash light stays on.  I placed a meter on the alternator and see a rise in voltage from idle 12.66 to 3000rpms or so 13.4.  What else could it be?

Thanks

General Discussion / Need help with Headers..
« on: July 20, 2009, 04:58:09 PM »
So I am in the 9th inning with this car.  So far everything has been great except the headers.  Car has factory AC and Power Steering.  I have the original 350 engine & Turbo 350 trans set aside and built a mild 383 and 700R4 for some fun.

I dont believe anyone builds a header for this car, so my options are to have custom built headers made OR do you think the stock exhaust manifolds would work ok on this (alum head angle plug) engine?

Thanks,

Damon
