Originality / cooling system decal
« on: September 15, 2007, 02:11:46 AM »
Did 1968 BB cars get a cooling decal and if so, where was it mounted? I don't see any reference to this decal in the ASM.

Thanks

Does anyone have a clue on what this part is and where it goes? I found it in my wndhield moulding box with a note i wrote saying it belongs on the windhield frame 2 3/4" off center on the drivers side. I cannot figure out where it goes.

Restoration / 68 convertible windshield frame
« on: April 27, 2007, 11:36:12 PM »
Can anyone provide me details or even a picture of what is on the windshield frame at the inside of a ragtop? I've installed the brushed chrome wrap around header moulding on the top of the windshield frame and the windshield pillar vinyl covered mouldings. Does something else cover the exposed painted area visible under the sunvisor between the sunvisor bracket and the rearview mirror?
I forgot to take pictures of this in 1983 when I took it apart.....go figure.

Thanks

Maintenance / tic toc tach wiring
« on: April 19, 2007, 04:51:28 AM »
Can anyone help with the dash wiring details for a 1968 tic toc tach?

I have the Brown lead at the negative side of the coil but the hook up at the tach terminal is orange. The tach has a pin type terminal and when the harness was installed I only saw one possible hook up (the orange wire) which has a sort of pass thru clip connector.

Thanks

Restoration / ragtop bow spacing
« on: February 12, 2007, 05:16:33 AM »
I see in the Fisher Body Manual that the correct distance betwwen the rear and center bows is 13 3/16" from center of middle bow to front edge of rear bow but the Sessions Restoration book says 14 1/2" from rear of middle bow to front edge of rear bow or the top won't fit. The last one works out 14 1/2 compared to 13 1/2 for GM. Anyone know which is correct?

Thanks

Restoration / convertible lift cylinders
« on: February 09, 2007, 05:24:47 AM »
Just for interest, is there a way to replace the upper seal on the 67-69 lift cylinders? I have a spare that I took apart and have the circlip/seal out for fun. Ths shaft end eye is too big and the piston sleeve is crimped .

Anyone had experience recovering 1968 deluxe front seats with the vinyl kits from PUI? Is the fit and stuffing correct?

Restoration / 68 remote outside mirror
« on: January 11, 2007, 05:08:46 AM »
Does anyone have experience with the OER repro mirror for 1968 ?

I had a devil of a time with the orig. GM interior mount....wrong shape on the remote head casting of the repro mirror. I fixed this with minor filing.

Now I notice the mirror panel itself seems too loose. This is a showstopper.

Originality / Redline tires
« on: December 27, 2006, 04:47:57 AM »
Does anyone have the original specs on the redlines shipped in 1968?

I'd like to know where the redline is on the sidewall, width of stripe, are thereFirestone script on the tire?  Seems to me that most of the repros on thge market have the redline too close to the wheel. My original photos show the redline almost near the midpoint of the sidewall/.

Maintenance / broken rocker arm
« on: October 27, 2006, 04:44:38 AM »
When I started my L35 after a full rebuild it ran fine for 30 minutes with lots of oil pressure. Just as i kicked it down to slow idle after bedding in the cam, there was a loud noiseand one exhaust valve stopped opening. Upon investigation the rocker arm on #6 exhaust was broken in half. The fracture was clean and through the pivot hole.

I have seen this only once before on a SB where the pivot hole was punched out. The nature of the fracture looks like metal fatique.

I repalced the rocker arm and everything seems fine. Anyone have any experience with this?

Originality / clutch rod
« on: July 05, 2006, 03:33:48 AM »
As you can see on the maintenance page, i am concerned about the amount of adjustment left (not much) on a new clutch in a 1968 with L35 with M20. I have a 1 piece rod and swivel. The shop manual says uas 2 piece rod on a Camaro V8. Most suppliers say the opposite. My original was 1 pc but who knows.

Any inputs?

Maintenance / exhaust manifold torque

The GM spec for BB exhaust manifold to head bolts is 25 ft lbs. seems low but is there a reason?

Maintenance / M20 clutch adjustment
« on: June 29, 2006, 03:32:42 PM »
I have just installed my L35 with M20 in my 68 convertible after 3 years of work. I have almost run out of thread on the adjuster rod with a new clutch . I noted the Z bar is on a slight angle to the front of the car on the motor (ball end). Seems to me that the repro rod is the same as my originals. The fork and throwout bearing are all new GM, clutch is aftermarket.

Any ideas on why I am out of adjustment range so soon with all new stuff?

Thanks

Restoration / Quarter window chrome
« on: May 03, 2006, 05:47:06 AM »
Has anyone tried the repro GM lisenced versions of the 67-68 quarter window mouldings that retain the weaatherstrip?

GM now only has the LHS at $150 vs 75 for a repro pair.
